organization. In colonial Virginia,  parishes and their boundaries were established (and altered) by act of the General Assembly. After the 16
January 1786 General Assembly passage of Thomas Jefferson's Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom, parishes continued to exist, but were no
longer official units of state government. The county is listed first, followed by the parish(es) associated with that county.
