Mrs. Adkins, the wife of Harry Adkins, who died a number of years ago, died at the residence of her son, Mr. Geo. W. Adkins, near Sperryville, last Wednesday, April 25. She was about 88 years of age. She was the mother of Mrs. Geo. W. Woodward, and Mrs. John Haney, of this place. Her funeral was preached by Elder Booton, of Luray.

Her funeral was preached on Saturday by Rev. Jno. N. Stirewalt. She leaves a husband and seven children to mourn her death.

Died at his home near Marksville on the 17th of April, Mr. Chrisley Aleshire. He was an aged and respected man. He was buried at Mt. Zion Dunkard church Saturday, the funeral services being conducted by Elder Joseph Foster. He had been employed by Mr. Jas. W. Koontz for forty years.

Mr. Emanuel Aleshire died at the residence of his son, Mr. Isaac I. Aleshire, near Stanley, Monday evening. He was in the 90th year of his age. He leaves several sons and daughters and a great many grand-children to mourn his loss... He worked up to last summer and made a hand. Rev. N.O. Sowers will preach his funeral.

Death of Mr. Emanuel Aleshire
Mr. Aleshire died March 31, 1902, after an illness of four weeks, being in an unconscious condition the last two weeks. He was born in this county, near Stanley, close to the old Lutheran church on 6th of June 1812, making him at death 89 years, 9 months and 25 days old. He is survived by three sisters: Mrs. Nancy Painter, Mrs. Susan Price, and Mrs. Frances Good, and two sons: George W. Aleshire and Isaac I. Aleshire, and two daughters: Mrs. Margaret Taylor and Mrs. Marinda Painter, besides 26 grand-children and about the same number of great-grand-children. His funeral was preached by the writer at the Advent church, near Stanley, to a crowded house... A very industrious man; seemd to have no enemies, with good-will for every one... He had never connected himself with any church. I have held conversations with him in reference to his hope for hereafter, and he always said: "My only trust is in what Jesus has done for me; I have no other hope; I trust aline in His death and merits."... Good Woman Goes to Her Reward
We regret to record the death of Mrs. George W. Aleshire, which occurred very unexpectedly at her home near Stanley, last Saturday, July 14th. She had been in ill-health for some time, though no one though her condition so serious. Her husband at the time of her death was in Winchester, where he was being treated for cancer, and the sad news- which was broken to him as he descended the car steps at Stanley Saturday evening, was indeed a crushing blow to him!.. Mrs. Aleshire was a daughter of the late Abram Painter, a graduate of the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute at Staunton, and was a bright, cheerful woman, notwithstanding her great affliction- that of being blind all her life. She leaves a husband, three brothers- Messrs. John W., Jubal and Isaac Painter, and two sisters- Mrs. John Short and Mrs. Henry Petefish, all living near Stanley.

MR ISAAC ALESHIRE
an old and highly esteemed citizen of Marksville District (mention of whose illness has been made several times in these columns) died at his home near Leaksville, Wednesday morning, February 22, 1899, in the 70th year of his age. He leaves an aged companion in feeble health. His funeral was preached on Friday morning by Elder T.S. Dalton, of the Old School Baptist Church, of which church Mr. Aleshire had been a member for about twenty years.

MASSANUTTON, VA March 1, 1899
Mr. Isaac Aleshire, whose condition we reported last week as being somewhat better, suffered a relapse and died of pneumonia on Wednesday last. His funeral took place at Alma on Friday by Elder Dalton, in the presence of a large congregation. Mr. Aleshire was a consistent member of the Old School Baptist church for quite a number of years.

JACOB ALESHIRE, a very old citizen of the county living near the head of the little Hawksbill, died on June 7th, from old age.
He was about 83 years old and had been confined to his room for some months.He was a member of the Disciples church for almost 15 years, having before that time been a member of the O.S. Baptist church. His funeral was preached by Elder John Huffman of the Tunker church.

MURDER NEAR MARKSVILLE
A shooting affray occurred near the foot of Tanner's Ridge, south of Marksville, this county, last Saturday evening, in which Mrs. Annie L. Alger, wife of Ashby Alger, was instantly killed, the shooting being done by Philip Alger, a brother of Ashby.
The Algers, together with several friends, had left Marksville early in the evening for their home, several miles distant, some being on horseback, while others were walking. The testimony of Ashby Alger at the inquest held at Marksville on Sunday evening before Coroner W.L. Hudson, of Luray, is that the party had proceeded peaceably on their journey homeward until they reached the foot of Tanner's Ridge, when Philip Alger, who was in advance of the others about ten steps, wheeled around in the road and fired a shot in the direction of those behind, demanding with an oath that they come no further.
Mrs. Alger, anxious to reach her infant at home, was in front of the party, and received the ball in the abdomen, producing almost instant death. The dead woman's husband immediately left the scene of the tragedy for an officer, but soon met several friends and with them returned to where his wife was lying in the road, her head supported by Mrs. John W. Alger, mother of the Alger brothers. When he reached the spot he says Philip Alger was standing over the dead body of his wife, waving his pistol, and remarking "Damn her, let her go."
At this juncture Ashby Alger struck Philip with a rock, and the two men then engaged in a struggle during which they fell almost across the body of the dead woman. In the fall the revolver flew out of Philip's hadn and was seized by Ashby.
An autopsy was held by Drs. Hudson and F.P. Koontz, but the ball was not found. The shooting is said to have been down with a Smith & Wesson revolver, 38 calibre. Deputy Sheriff Kibler arrested Alger and brought him to the Stanley "lockup" where he was kept till Sunday morning, when he was brought to Luray and lodged in jail. The terrible crime is said to have been entirely unprovoked and has greatly incensed the law abiding people of the community.
Alger, when places in the steel cage at the jail expressed great surprise, saying the shooting was simply an accident. We understand that his trial will probably take place at the November term of court. We do not know whether he has as yet employed counsel or not.

Mr. Frederick Alger, a highly esteemed citizen of the Koontz neighborhood, near Newport, this county, died last Monday morning at 4 o’clock. Eight weeks ago he was a hale, hearty man, weighing over 200 pounds. His first trouble was some affection of the heart, followed soon after by pneumonia, which later resulted in rapid consumption, causing death as stated. He leaves a wife and six children…

Mrs. Bettie Atkins, wife of Mr. George B. Atkins, died at the home of her husband in this place on last Tuesday morning, about half-past seven o'clock. She had been ill for several months. Besides her aged husband, she leaves several daughters and one son, Mr. M.W. Atkins, of Ridgeway, Va., who arrived but a few hours before her death... She was buried on Wednesday at her old home- the George B. Slusher place- near town, the funeral services being conducted by her pastor, Rev. Mr. Sherman, of the Methodist church. Mrs. Atkins was in the 62nd year of her age.

DEATH OF MR. GEO. W. ATKINS
At the advanced age of 81 years and four months Mr. George W. Atkins died at his home in this place on last Saturday night, Oct. 3rd, at 11 o’clock. Mr. Atkins was a native of Rappahannock county, tho for a number of years had resided in Page, where he was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Mr. Atkins had been a member of the Methodist church for several years. His funeral was conducted by Pastor Loyd, assisted by Rev. H.M. Strickler, took place from his late home on Monday afternoon, after which his remains were conveyed to the Slusher family burial ground (near Fletcher Chapel) and interred by the side of his aged companion, who preceded him to the grave some six years ago. The deceased is survived by the following children: Miss Maude and Miss Mary Atkins, at home; Mrs. John Strole, of Farmville, Va., Mr. M.W. Atkins, of Ridgeway, Va., and Mrs. John H. Cornell, of Missouri.

Death of Mrs. Geo. Bailey
This venerable and beloved woman died at the home of her husband, near Marksville, this county, at 2 o’clock on Tuesday morning of this week, at the advanced age of about 82 years. She had been in declining health for a number of years, and last Sunday was stricken with paralysis, and death, as above stated, ensued in a short time.
… She was beloved by everybody. She had been a member of the Old School Baptist church for many years, and her good life was a model to all. Her funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon at the old home where the greater part of her life has been spent, her pastor, Elder Pittman conducting the service, and was attended by a large congregation of friends and neighbors. She is survived by her aged husband and seven children: Mrs. J.R. Buracker, Mrs. Edward Kiblinger, Mrs. Lizzie Enright, and Messrs. Chas. and Samuel Bailey, who live in Illinois, and T.J. Bailey and J.L. Bailey, of this county.

Mrs. Harriet E. Berry died in Harrisonburg, on the 1st day of January, 1910, of cancer. Her remains were brought to her old home (Alma) accompanied by her son, Mr. D. Wilmer Berry, who was with her in her last illness; funeral services were conducted on Sunday evening by Elder J.B. Jenkins, interment in the Alma cemetery. The deceased was a great sufferer, but bore her suffering and afflictions with patience… She was a member of the Alma Old School Baptist church, and was in the 64th year of her age. The following children survive her: Mr. D.W. Berry, Mrs. W.B. Woodward, and Mrs. R.L. Dinges.

Mr. George Austin Bradley, an aged and respected citizen of this place, died at the home of his son, Mr. J.S. Bradley, at an early hour this (Wednesday) morning. She was the mother of fourteen children, raised thirteen to man and womanhood, 8 sons and 5 daughters. She lived to see her youngest son married to his third wife. Her remains were conveyed to their resting place on the 2d day of December, where a part of her children and grand-children had the opportunity of seeing her remains consigned to their last resting place… Her funeral was preached from Rev. 13, chap., 13 v., by Eld. John H. Menefee.

TRAGIC DEATH
Mr. William F. Bradley, an aged citizen of Blosserville, this county, came to a sudden and horrible death last Friday under peculiar circumstances. He had risen very early in the morning and was building a fire in the fire-place of his room, when from some cause he fell into the fire-place. His clothing took fire, and before the flames could be extinguished he was burned so seriosuly that he died in the afternoon of the same day. His wife, who has been an invalid for about two years, was lying in bed in the same room, and seeing her husband's terrible struggles to free himself from the torture of the flames, by almost superhuman effort, jumped from her bed and assisted him in smothering the fire, or he doubtless would have been burned to a crisp. Mr. Bradley was the eldest living member of one of the oldest and most popular families in Page... Mr. Bradley had been a member of the Dunkard church for a number of years, and his funeral was conducted by Elder Martin Rothgeb, on Sunday morning... at Mount Zion meeting-house. Mr. Bradley was the father of a large family of children- Mrs. Sam Judd, near Kimball; Mrs. John Griffith, of Overall; Mrs. J. Frank Dunlap, of Blosserville, and Mrs. Ben. Sours, of Charlestown, W.Va., and Messrs. Luther, Charles, David, William, Nathan and John, all save the last named citizens of this county. At the time of his death Mr. Bradley was 75 years, one month and sixteen days old.

The deceased was a member of the Dunkard church, and her funeral was preached on Tuesday by Elder Strickler of Luray.

DEATH OF AN AGED LADY
At the advanced age of 89 years, 3 months and 2 days, Miss Ann Buracker departed this life at her home in this place at 7:30 o'clock, Thursday, December 5, 1901. She had been sick for several days, though her death was simply the result of exhaustion from extreme old age. Up to the last week or so before her death she retained much of the energy that characterized her long life... In religious views Miss Ann, we are informed, was a strong believer in the Old School Baptist doctrine, and many years ago professed conversion, but never attached herself to any church. Miss Ann was born at Willow Grove Mills (then known as Munnelsville;) her father was Michael Buracker, and her mother was a Miss Guernser (now Gander) a half sister of the late Henry Gander, of this county, both of whom came from Germany to this country when very young. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Miller, and many other relatives and friends. Her funeral, conducted by Rev. H.H. Sherman, took place from her late home on Saturday afternoon.

Mr. Caleb Campbell, a former citizen of this county and a son we learn of Joseph Campbell of this county was killed last week at Charlestown by a train on the Valley railroad. He was in a sleigh with another man, and undertaking to cross the track both were killed.

FATALLY BURNED
Daisy Campbell, aged about 18 years, daughter of Samuel Campbell, who lives near Marksville, was burned so badly last Monday afternoon that she died about 2 o’clock the night following. She was starting a fire in the cook stove when from some cause the flames were communicated to her clothing, burning her body in a horrible manner… Dr. Long was called and died everything possible for the alleviation of the suffering of the poor girl, but her injuries were too serious for her possible recovery. The affair is a most distressing one, and her aged father and mother and family are greatly pitied in this deep affliction.

The wife of George Campbell, who lives near Marksville, in this county, died instantly on Friday night the 18th inst. She had just retired, as well as apparently as usual, and in attempting to turn over in her bed, fell out, and when picked up was dead. She is supposed to have died with heart disease.

Mr. James Campbell, who for a year or more has been living on the I.N. Coffman farm, west of the River, died last Friday morning, aged about 66 years. Mr. Campbell was a good citizen and had the respect of all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his departure a widow and six children, eight children having preceded him to the spirit land. His funeral was preached at Nauman’s, Elder Reuben Strickler officiating; interment near Stanley, his old home.

He was paralyzed only two or three days before his death, Elder Pittman, of Luray, preached his funeral. He leaves one son and one daughter, and was respected by all.

Another Man Killed on the Track!
William Campbell, alias “Buck” Campbell, son of James Campbell, a young man about 20 years of age, was killed on the railroad track a few rods south of Sands, this county, last Saturday morning about 1 o’clock. The facts as developed at the Coroner’s inquest are as follows: Campbell and several companions left Mr. Biedler’s store at Sands between 10 and 11 o’clock Saturday night, all, our informant states, under the influence of liquor. They went south on the railroad track as far as the Ochre Bank trestle where they all laid down. Later three of the party left, when Campbell, the man who lost his life, and his cousin, Chales Campbell, went to sleep, and when the later awoke the man, who was killed was gone. Nothing was seen of him till after ..illegible.. Sunday morning the train men found his dead body on the track about 300 yards north of the trestle. It is supposed the freight train south soon after mid-night was the one that killed him. Coroner Dr. Hudson was summoned early Sunday morning and held and inquest on the body, when the jury, composed of the following gentlemen, A.J. Foltz, G.W. Good, James H. Coffman, J.W. Good, G.W. Weaver and T.S. Brown, rendering the following verdict “that the said Campbell came to his death June 15th by being run over by a train on the S.V.R.R., he being under the influence of liquor.” Campbell’s body was little mutilated.

Mrs. Ann Eliza Cave, nee Phillips, widow of the late Albert G. Cave, departed this life at her home, three miles south of this place, Monday evening, July 26, 1897. The deceased was born in Page county July 25th, 1828, aged 69 years and one day. She was a daughter of the late Jonathan and Elizabeth Phillips, of Page, and has many friends who survive her in her native county. She leaves eight children, all grown, and two sisters and one brother, Thomas H. Phillips, of Elkton, and Mrs. Mary Cave, of Page county, wife of Rev. John A. Cave- Tenth Legion Cor. of the Rockingham Register.

wife of Mr. David N. Cave, died November 9, 1900, after an illness of more than six months... a member of Antioch church for twenty-five years. She leaves a husband and one daughter to mourn her departure. Her two oldest daughters went before her to enjoy the rest given the children of God. Mrs. Cave was forty-one years old at the time of her death. Her funeral service was conducted by the present pastor of Antioch church, Rev. D.S. Henkel, on Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Her grave was made by the side of her two daughters at the residence of her husband near Cave Hill, west of Luray.

Mr. George A. Comer, who recently moved from near Stanley, this county, to Fauquier, had the misfortune to lose one of his children last week. Mr. Comer, we learn, was out in the field burning brush, when his three-year old son, who was with him, in some way, got so near the fire that his clothing caught, and before the fire could be extinguished, he was so badly burned that death ensued in a short time.

Near Luray, on Monday last, Jan. 11, 1892, at 1 o'clock in the morning, Mr. George H. Comer died, aged 58 years, 9 months and 8 days. Mr. Comer, always of a frail constitution, had been seriosuly sick but a short time, and when his death was announced but few had heard that he was sick... Before the war he taught school for many years in his neighborhood. He was also a collector and constable for a number of years. He was a thoroughly self-made man... His funeral was preached by his pastor, Rev. John N. Stirewalt, in the presence of a large congregation of friends, and his remains buried in the grave yard at his old home, where he was born and raised and near where he died.

Mrs. John Comer, living about one mile from Shenandoah City, while engaged in making apple butter on Tuesday evening of this week was horribly burned about the body, and from which she died about 10 o'clock that night. Her clothes became ignited from the fire under the kettle, and were burned almost entirely from her body. She was a daughter of Mr. "Mac" McAlister of that community, and is survived by a husband and several children.

Death of a Former Citizen of Page
Solomon Comer, brother of Mr. Geo. H. Comer, of this county, died at his home, in Oregon, Holt Co., Mo., May 7th. The local paper of that county, in chronicling his death, has this to say of him:
“Of Mr. Comer it may be safely said, “He tried to live a Christian life.”…
The deceased was born in Page Co., Va., in 1817, and was married in 1847 to Miss Ann Grove, in Luray, who, with ten children, survive him. In 1854 the deceased came to Holt county, where he has resided up to the time of his death. He had been a consistent member of the Regular Baptist church here since 1856. His remains were followed to Mmaple Grove Cemetery on Sunday by a large concourse of sorrowing friends, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. C.W. Miller.”

She never attached herself to any church, but leaned with the Dunkards and Baptists, and talked a great deal on religious matters. Peace and rest to her soul. A Sad Accident
Mr. Elisha Cubbage, a man about 35 years of age, son of Jas. H. Cubbage, near Marksville, who been hauling bark in Madison Co., we understand, on his return home last Saturday night about 11 o’clock, asleep in his wagon which was being driven by his son, was overturned and had his neck broken, causing, as is supposed, instant death. It was very dark and his son not seeing him and supposing that he had walked away went on home with his team. Mr. James H. Cubbage went in search of him and found him in the condition above stated. He leaves a wife but no children. Dr. Hudson, coroner, viewed the remains, but deemed an inquest unnecessary.

Mr. James Cubbage was buried yesterday at his home in Cubbage Hollow. He was advanced in age, and was noted for his great muscular power. He was a quiet, peacable citizen. He is the man who carried a wheat fan across the Blue Ridge, and remarked upon meeting a fellow traveler, after stopping and talking with him for a half hour or more, so they say. With the wheat fan on his back all the while) that it wasn’t so heavy, but awful unhandy!" Undertaker James T. Phillips of Marksville, buried him. He was in the 85th year of his age.

Mrs. Mary Cubbage died at her home, the old-home place of her father, the late Reuben Dadisman, on Mill Creek last Friday, aged 63 years. Mrs. Cely Dinges died at her home near Leaksville last Wednesday evening, aged 75 years, 3 months and 2 days. She was the mother of 10 children, 9 living. Her husband and one child, Mrs. John Henkel, having preceded her to the spirit world. Three sons and two daughters reside in Page, one daughter lives in Fauquier, one son and two daughters in the West… She was a faithful member of the Christian church at Leaksville… Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Elder Moore, and her remains were laid to rest beside her husband in Leaksville cemetery.

Mr. Patrick Dodson died suddenly at his home, just north of town, last Sunday about twelve o’clock. He was a faithful, industrious man, and only the day before, as bad as the weather was, he was busy at his usual avocation, chopping wood. He was a member of the Dunkard church, having connected himself with the Brethren at Mount Zion only last summer… The deceased, with his wife, had just reached home from a visit to his son in East End, when, without warning, he sank to the floor and expired! He is survived by his widow and several grown children. The deceased had lived in Rappahannock up to within the last few years, and was about 65 years old.

DEATH OF MR. DOFFLEMOYER
Mr. B.F. Dofflemoyer died at his home near Grove Hill, this county, last Sunday morning. Mr. Dofflemoyer had been in failing health for about a year, and for the last three months had been confined to his home for the greater part of the time. Dropsy was the immediate cause of his death. He was a good man in every sense of the term- upright and honest in all of his dealings. He was a member of the Baptist church, and his funeral was preached by his kinsman, Rev. Mr. Dofflemoyer, the large concourse of relatives and friends in attendance upon his funeral last Monday attested the high regard in which he was held by his friends and neighbors. He was in the 64th year of his age.

All Around Alma
DEAR COURIER: Died at her home near Alma on last Thursday morning Mrs. Phoebe Ann Dofflemoyer, wife of Mr. John Dofflemoyer, in the 40th year of her age. She leaves to mourn her loss, a mother, a step-father, Mr. R.N. Jenkins, one brother, Mr. Newton Rhinehart, of New Market, one sister, Mrs. Emma Smith, near Luray, and a husband and seven children. She was only sick about two weeks. Her funeral was preached by Rev. A.G. Powers of the Christian church, after which her remains were interred in the old family graveyard at Mr. Ambrose Rhinehart's beside her father, the late Harvey Rhinehart.

Mrs. Hannah Donnovan, widow of the late Daniel Donnovan, died last Sunday night, March 8th, 1896, of heart disease, at her home near Stanley, and was buried at Graves’ Chapel on Tuesday. Rev. J. Harry Smith preached her funeral to a large congregation of relatives and friends. She was 68 years, 7 months and 20 days old.

DEATH OF MRS. DOVEL
Mrs. Elizabeth M. Dovel, widow of Peter S. Dovel, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T.A. Smoot, in this place on Tuesday evening, July 21, 1903, aged about 62 years. Mrs. Dovel was on a visit to her daughter, and was preparing to go to the hospital for special treatment, when she suffered a stroke of paralysis on last Sunday morning. This was the immediate cause of her death. She is survived by five children- Messrs. Charles and Jacob Dovel, Mrs. T.A. Smoot, Mrs. T.A. Norman and Mrs. Wm. Painter. The funeral will be conducted by Elders Rothgeb, Strickler and Foster and the interment will take place at the Adventist grave-yard near Stanley tomorrow morning.

Mr. Isaac Duncan, a respected citizen of Massanutton, was paralyzed about 2 o'clock last Wednesday morning, and died at 6 o'clock the same day. He was over 80 years old, and very strong and active up to the day before his death... His funeral was conducted by Eld. Daily, and his remains interred in Mrs. Mary E. Burner's graveyard...

Mr. Jacob Echard, an old and respected citizen of this county, died at his home near Stony Man, on last Sunday, in the 72nd year of his age. He was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, where his remains were interred, and his funeral preached by his pastor, Rev. Jno. N. Stirewalt.
