  • Banks, Shirley Ann Ford

    Shirley Ann Ford Banks, affectionately known as "Mom", "Mommy" and "MaMa", died at home of her daughter and son-in-law in Chesterfield County, Va. She received her education in the Nottoway County Public School System. At a young age, Shirley accepted Christ in her life and joined the Cellar Creek Baptist Church, Blackstone, VA. During her Christian journey, Shirley devoutly served in many ministries. To name a few: Sunday School Superintendent, Choir, Hospitality, Pastor's Aide, Teacher, Trustee, Women's Ministry and Mission. She also served as Treasurer for the Poplar Lawn Sunday School Union. Shirley's desire to serve the Lord was so profound and dedicated, she would serve anywhere, at anytime, for anybody, without a moments notice. She was employed at Levi Strauss until she began to further her education in special education and early childhood development, which enabled her to move into her calling and area of passion, working with children. This calling lasted for approx 22 years, retiring in June 2008. Shirley lived a life of enjoyment through bowling, traveling and spending quality time with her family and friends. She had a sense of humor that was so unique and special, it would leave you in stitches, holding your side, while tears ran down your face, yet she never cracked a smile and would say, "I don't see where it's so funny." Her wisdom, strength, spiritual guidance and unwavering faith, constantly gave rise for her to be a listening ear, a friendly smile and an encourager. Just being in a room with her, brought joy and delight to all those in her presence.
    Funeral Services were held at 2:30 pm, Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the Cellar Creek Baptist Church, Blackstone, VA. Interment in the church cemetery.

    Hortense Martin Boisseau, 96, of Crewe, passed away peacefully December 21, 2014. Mrs Boisseau is survived by one sister, Jo Ann Gerdes; Daughters, Nancy Eager, Elaine Boisseau-Beville & husband Steven and Amy Dew, six grandchildren, Omine, Jacob, Zoe, Zacharias, Alexandros and Megan, three great-grandchildren, Alexandria, Lauren and Lindsey. A lifelong resident of Crewe, Mrs Boisseau was always proud of her Cradle Role certificate showing she was a member of the Methodist Church since her birth in 1918. She was a unique character in Crewe and will be remembered for her since of humor and love of life and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She once wrote down her goodbyes with the words Adieu, Auf Wiedersehen, Sayonara and farewell. A celebration of Mrs Boisseau's life will be held 12:00 Noon on Saturday, January 10, 2014 at Crewe United Methodist Church, 607 Georgia Ave, Crewe.   • Clay, Anne Scott

    On the morning of January 27, 1919, Mrs Anne Scott Clay passed quietly but triumphantly out to her reward after several months illness. She was born in Amelia county, August 14, 1856, the daughter of George Henry and Sarah Rebecca Scott.
    December 1, 1878, she became the bride of Irving Anderson Clay, at which time the happy young couple went to Nottoway county to make their home near Spainville. To this union God gave four daughters and two sons, who still survive to morn their loss.
    The funeral services were conducted at Rocky Hill M E Church by Rev B B Bland, the pastor of the Nottoway Circuit, assisted by Rev J R Sturgis, one of her former pastors. After which her body was laid to rest in the cemetery by the side of her husband, who preceded her to the grave twenty years ago.
    Sister Clay was born of the spirit and united with the church at the age of ten. When married she transferred her membership from the Baptist church near her home to Rocky Hill M E Church, where she wrought well for the Master. She loved her church and attended all the services there as long as she was able.
    Sister Clay was a loyal wife, an affectionate mother and a kind friend. "Woman's worth is to be estimated by the goodness of her heart, the greatness of her soul, the sublime purity and strength of her character, and service rendered in life." Sister Clay's life is credited with having stood the test. To know her was to appreciate and to love her. To be in her presence was an inspiration to the soul. While she ripening in years she was active in _____ and manifested a desire to live that she might serve, but when she realized her condition she said not my will but thine be done. Her death was a glorious example of Christian faith. She walked an earthly pilgrimage. She knew death was gain, as a blessed ______ just across the way.

  • Coleman, Howard Leroy "Penny"

    Howard Leroy (Penny) Coleman was born July 24, 1959 in Nottoway County, Virginia to Ms Jeanette Coleman.
    Howard was educated in the Nottoway County School System, attended St Paul College in Lawrenceville and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in business. At an early age, he began his Christian walk. He was baptized at Cedar Hill Baptist Church and later moved his membership to Manassa Hill Baptist Church where he was a faithful member until his illness. He was a member of the Male Chorus and a member of the Missionary Ministry.
    Howard bore his illness patiently and gracefully, never complaining and would often try to make his loved ones feel he was not suffering. Rather, he chose to tell the Lord about his suffering.
    He departed this life on Friday, October 19, 2007.
    Howard leaves the celebrate and thank God for his beautiful life: a devoted son, Roderick Fowlkes; a loving mother, Jeanette Coleman; a devoted brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Gloria Coleman; seven sisters, Helen (James) Thompson, Diann Curtis, Jackie (Jerry) Bowler, Juanita (Frank) Woodley Jr, Harriett Lawrence, Angie and Darlene Coleman; five brothers, James Roger (Ethel), Wilbert (Carolyn), Jesse and Corey (LaTonya); two grandchildren, Rodre' and Keona Fowlkes; three aunts, Mary Booker, Frances (Howard) Edmonds and Elizabeth Coleman; two grand children, Charita and Tierra Coleman; a devoted cousin, Samuel Wilson Jr; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
    Funeral Services will be held Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 1:00 pm from Manassa Hill Baptist Church, Amelia, VA with interment in the church cemetery.

    Annie Mae Crawley died in the Johnston Willis Hospital, Richmond, Va. She received her education in the Nottoway Public School System and was baptized and joined the First Nottoway Baptist Church at an early age. She was employed at Piedmont Hospital, Burkeville, Va for a short while. She met her husband-to-be at Piedmont Hospital, after they married she became a homemaker. Annie Mae was a very loving and caring person, she was loved by all who knew her.

  • Doswell, Benjamin Cosby Sr

    Benjamin Cosby Doswell Sr died after a lengthy illness at the Hickory Hill Retirement Community, Burkeville, Va. He was educated in the Nottoway County School System. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and joined New Prospect Baptist Church. He was a dedicated and faithful servant. He served as a Trustee for many years. Benjamin served his country in the Army from January 3, 1943 as a Special Vehicle Operator and received an Honorable Discharge on December 25, 1945. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the NAACP. Ben owned and operated Ben's Café in Kenbridge, Va for forty five years. In 1958 Benjamin married the former Mary Anna Foster of Nottoway County.

    Horace "Toul" Eppes died at the VCU/MCV Hospital, Richmond, Va. He born in Burkeville, VA and educated in Nottoway County Public Schools. He attended the Yielding Zion Baptist Church, Burkeville, Va at a younger age. He enjoyed umpiring baseball games and watching other children play softball and baseball games. "Toul" was loved by everyone. He was a caring and sensitive person. If he could help you in anyway, he would be there for you. He would always try to make you smile, laugh and cry at times.

    Geraldine Bland Harmon, of Burkeville, Va, died at the ManorCare Stratford Hall, Henrico County, Va. She graduated from Dinwiddie Training School in 1953 and Piedmont Nursing School. She retired from Piedmont Sanitarium as a supervisor in nursing and also taught nursing at Amelia Nottoway Vocational School. She resided in Burkeville for 52 years.
    At an early age Geraldine joined Rocky Branch Baptist Church, Sutherland, Va. Later she moved her membership to First Nottoway Baptist Church, Crewe, Va. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Evergreen Benjamin Chapter #64 in Crewe since October 1958 and the Golden Circle Order of Eastern Star.
    Funeral services were held at noon Saturday, December 23, 2006 at First Nottoway Baptist Church, Crewe, Va.

  • Hart, Glenn E Sr

    Glenn E Hart Sr, 67 of Crewe, passed away Monday, December 15, 2014. He is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Carol Jennings Hart. Two children: Lisa Hart Whitehead and husband Kenny, and Glenn E Hart Jr "Bubba" and wife Leigh all of Crewe; four grandchildren: Chance and Ryan Whitehead, Marissa and Joe McMillian. His brothers: Clarence Walter Hart Jr and wife Matilda of Blackstone, and Michael Terry Hart and wife Brenda of Crew. Glenn was preceded in death by parents Walter and Elsie Hart. He served in the Army Reserves for nineteen years and as a maintenance director at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blackstone for over thirty years. Being a sports lover, he was a huge supporter of Kenston Forest School's athletic program and also received the honor of being inducted into the USSSA Hall of Fame as a softball umpire. He was a life member of the Blackstone Volunteer Fire Department serving over twenty years. Family will receive friends at Jennings-McMillian Funeral home, 200 West Carolina Avenue, Crewe, VA on Tuesday, December 16, from 6-8 pm. Graveside services will be held at Crewe Cemetery at 11am on Wednesday, December 17 with Rev Dr Pete Smith.   • Hawkes, Elizabeth Ann Walker

    Elizabeth Ann Walker born May 7, 1943 to William L Walker and Lona B Walker, departed this life on January 25, 2010 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Va.
    She was a graduate of Lunenburg High School. Later she attended the Nursing School at Piedmont Sanitarium where she obtained her LPN license. She was employed by Piedmont Geriatric Hospital for thirty-two years until she retired.
    At an early age, she joined Dundas Chapel Church in Dundas Virginia and later moved her membership to Cellar Creek Baptist Church. She served as Secretary for the Cellar Creek Baptist Church Choir. She was a member of The Daughters-In-Christ Ministry. She was a dedicated and devoted member until her illness.
    She was united in holy matrimony to the late Eddie Lee Hawkes who preceded her in death.
    She was also preceded in death by her parents Lona and William Walker; half-brother, Robert E Walker and brother-in-law, Cornelius Johnson Jr.
    Funeral Services Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Cellar Creek Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.

  • Kries, Rhoda Ruth

    Rhoda Ruth Kries Fowlkes Jones died in the Hickory Hill Retirement Community, Burkeville, VA. At an early age, she joined Christ Presbyterian Church in Burkeville. When the churches merged, she became a member of Bethesda United Presbyterian Church, Nottoway County, VA. She was a church Elder and an active member of United Presbyterian Women until her health began to decline. She was dedicated to her church and all of its concerns, including helping organize and teach Sunday School and Bible School.
    "Ruth", as she preferred to be called, attended Nottoway County Public Schools, then Ingleside Seminary for high school. She graduated from Saint Paul's Polytechnic Institute (now Saint Paul's University), Lawrenceville, VA with a normal degree in teaching. While teaching, she returned to Saint Paul's College and in 1959 graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Her teaching career began in Charlotte County (Saxe, VA). Most of her career was spent in Nottoway County Schools. Ruth was married for 64 years to Elwood L Jones.
    In addition to reading educational materials, Ruth was an avid reader of religious books, novels and magazines. When not reading, she could be found in the kitchen creating her famous sweet potato pies, lemon pound cake or southern fried chicken. Until her health failed, she was an active member of Evergreen Benjamin Lodge No 64 Order of Eastern Star.
    Funeral services were held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Blackstone, VA.

  • Martin, Ronnie Lee

    Ronnie Lee Martin, 66, of Crewe, went to be with our Lord Friday, June 27, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer.
    Ron was born in Gaffney, SC and served in the US Army as a flight operator and aircraft maintenance. MSG Martin served two tours in Vietnam and received four Bronze Stars and one Silver Star. Upon his discharge he served in law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff in Lexington County, SC and as an Emergency Dispatcher for Nottoway County Sheriff's Department for the past 10 years. Ron was known for his resourcefulness and his selfless dedication to the citizens of Nottoway County and best known for his calm and skillful demeanor in emergency situations.
    He is survived by his dedicated wife, Rita G Martin; beloved children, Daniela and Adrian of South Carolina, Rachel and Stefan of Crewe; a sister, Louise Brown and husband, Joe; a brother, Johnny Martin and wife, Gayle; one granddaughter, Cashia; his sister-in-law, Joyce Inge and husband, Doug; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Franklin and Marjorie Gunn of Crewe.
    Funeral services were conducted 3:00 pm, Monday, June 30, 2008 at Bagby Memorial Baptist Church, Burkeville with interment in the church cemetery. Reverend J Clyde Shelton officiated. Military honors provided by the US Army. Visitation was held at the church one hour prior to the service.

    John Alvin "Johnny" Matthew, age 71, passed away April 14, 2009.
    He is survived by his wife Lillian Daniels Matthew; three children, Janet M Bowman and her husband David Alan Bowman of Rice, David C Matthew of Blackstone and Wendy M Taylor and her husband Jerry Taylor of Burkeville; four grandchildren, Melissa Renae Fulcher, Matthew C Bowman, Jerry Wayne Taylor and Scott C Matthew; one great-granddaughter Madison E Fulcher; two sisters-in-law, Norma D Danos and her husband Darrel Danos of Lynchburg and Nancy D Williams of Blackstone; two brothers-in-law, Tom Daniels and his wife Marie S Daniels of Goochland and John Crews Jr of Lynchburg. He was preceeded in death by a sister, Margaret C Crews.
    Mr Matthew was a retired machinist from Velvet Textile Company.
    Funeral services were held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Bethel Methodist Church with interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the Hamner-McMillian Funeral Home, 1400 S Main Street, Blackstone from 7:00 to 8:30 pm Friday evening.

    Alice Belle Morgan died at her residence in Hopewell, Va. She spent much of her life in Philadelphia, Pa and later returned to Virginia to be closer to her family members and loved ones. Alice was educated in Nottoway County Public Schools. She then later move to Baltimore, Md and then on to Philadelphia, Pa where she resided for more than thirty years. While in Philadelphia she worked in the hospitality industry, doing what she loved most, helping others. Alice retired from Summers Gate in Philadelphia, Pa.

  • Oliver, Shamia Twanna "Sue"

    Shamia Twanna Oliver departed this life and entered into eternal rest on January 31, 2011. Although she was an angel on earth, God had a higher calling for her to become one of his angels in heaven.
    Sue, as she was affectionately called by family and friends, was the daughter of Bertie R Oliver and the late Therman R Oliver Sr. She was born on December 12, 1985 at MCV Hospital in Richmond, Va.
    Sue accepted the Lord as her Savior at an early age, and was baptized at Mt Calvary Baptist Church. As a young girl she sang in the youth choir. She remained an active and faithful member of the church until her untimely departure.
    Sue attended and graduated with High Honors from Nottoway High School in 2004 where she was one of few to attend and successfully complete the Governors School Program. She furthered her education at Southside Virginia Community College, where she received her Associates of Arts and Science Degree in Business Administration in 2006.
    Sue learned the meaning of hard work at an early age. As a youth she worked for Greenhill Catering and Hardee's Restaurant. She later went on to become a correctional officer working with youth at Beaumont Juvenile Correctional Center for five years until she resigned to devote all of her time to being a stay-at-home mom to the loves of her life, Cedric Jr and Bryce.
    Sue loved spending time with and taking care of her family. She also had a passion for doing hair and reading in her spare time.
    Sue's life long friendship with Cedric Hawkes Sr evolved into a beautiful love. They had a strong commitment to each other and to their beautiful sons Cedric Jr and Bryce.
    Sue was preceded in death by her father, Therman R Oliver Sr; brothers, Terrance and Therman Jr (Summer); sister, Mildred; and uncles, Ronald and Mack (Connie).
    Sue will forever be loved, cherished, and remembered by her family and friends that she leaves behind: a loving and devoted fiancé, Cedric Hawkes Sr; two adorable sons, Cedric Jr (CJ) and Bryce Hawkes; a loving mother, Bertie R Oliver; one loving and devoted brother, Theron Oliver of Crewe (Deandra); one loving and devoted sister, Lauren Oliver of Crewe; her loving uncles and stand-in fathers, James (Arlene), Mark (Ella), Samuel (Shirley), Elston (Dale), Charles (Linda), and Daniel (Emma); one devoted aunt, Janice; three nephews, Trevon, Therman III, and Tre'Shawn; one niece, Te'Ahra; one goddaughter, Whitley; a devoted cousin, Trina Robertson; other relatives and friends. Sue also leaves to cherish her memory, extended family, Kermit and Lucy Hawkes; Grandma Lucy Ward; nieces, Olivia and Marcella; nephews, Cordell, Brandon, Christopher, Keon, Kylik, Malik, and Raquan; devoted cousin, Frankie Lipscomb; the Ward Family and the Hawkes Family.
    Funeral Services Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 11 am at Mt Calvary Baptist Church, Crewe, with interment in the Fowlkes Family Cemetery, Crewe.

  • Scott, Pattie Louise

    Greenhill, Va, March 10 -- On March the 3rd, 1915, the death angel entered the home of Mrs Ann Clay, and claimed as its victim her only sister, Miss Pattie Louise Scott. She was born in Amelia county February 13th, 1853, where she resided until a few years after the marriage of her sister, when she moved with her parents to Green Hill, they having preceded her many years ago. The deceased had been in bad health for the past twenty-five years; being subject to epileptic spells, but for the past six months she has been confined to her room most of the time.
    Two weeks previous to her death, she got so much better it was thought she would recover her usual heath but in a week she took her bed again. It was not thought then the end was near until Tuesday morning she began sinking and died Wednesday morning at 1:05 o'clock.
    Deceased had been a member of the Baptist church since early in life, she first joined the Union Baptist church in Amelia county. Since moving to this county, she joined the Baptist church at Blackstone. The funeral services were conducted by Rev Pritchard, owing to the sickness of her pastor. Interment was made in Rocky Hill cemetery in the presence of a large crowd of relatives and friends.

  • Tucker, Neldonia Sarah "Nell"

    Neldonia "Nell" Sarah Tucker died at the Saint Francis Medical Center, Chesterfield County, Va. She was educated and graduated from Nottoway County Senior High School. She also graduated from Virginia State College of Petersburg, Va in 1978. Nell was joined in holy matrimony in November 1979 to Francis Tucker. She was a very dedicated employee of Consolidated Bank & Trust, Richmond, Va until her health started to fail. She was baptized at an early age and was president of the choir for a few years, and was a faithful member of the church choir until her health failed. She was also a member of the Pastor's Aid Society, the Women's Ministry and attended Sunday School. She had a flair for fashion always. She was a blessing to be around.

    Mrs Rosa White, 74, died at 3:25 pm, Monday, at Waynesboro Community Hospital, where she had been taken as a patient Sunday evening.
    She was born Oct 20, 1877, in Wellville, daughter of the late Daniel S and Annie Bondurant Wilson. For the past year, she had made her home with her sister, Mrs O H Pattie, 513 Chestnut Ave.
    Widow of Edwin E White, she was a member of the Blackstone Presbyterian Church and the Huguenot Society.
    In addition to her sister, she is survived by one brother, Pym Wilson, Suffolk; and a number of nieces and nephews.
    The funeral procession will leave Etter Funeral Home Wednesday at 9:45 am for Rocky Hill Methodist Church, near Wellville. Funeral service will be held at the church at 2:30 pm, Wednesday, conducted by the Rev Mr Murphy. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The body may be viewed at the church between 2 and 2:30 pm Wednesday.

"Bannie" and the late Emmett Williams were the proud owners of the Mayflower Inn of Blackstone for over thirty years; serving the Blackstone community with food, beverages and entertainment that inspired and provided the social meeting place for many in the area. They also provided rental properties and housing opportunities for a vast majority of Blackstone residents for many years. She was a proud, demanding, and no nonsense landlord.
    Funeral Services were held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Blackstone, VA. Interment in the Doswell Family Cemetery, Blackstone, VA.
    Funeral arrangements entrusted to the staff of the W E Hawkes & Son Funeral Home, 504 East Street, Blackstone, VA.
