John Maddison Land Patent (Original - 1653/54)

John Maddison received a 600 acres land patent on the Mattapony River on 4 Jan. 1653/54 (Patent Book 3, page 217). At the time of the patent, the land is described to be in Gloucester Co., VA, but it was in the part of Gloucester Co., VA which became New Kent Co., VA in 1654. This is nothing new. However, the apparent original of this land patent is lodged at the Alderman Library, University of Virginia, Accession No. 2257 (Baylor Collection), Box 2, Legal Papers, 1653-1712. It contains lots of additional information. First the preface to the patent says that it is based on activity in James City on 12 March 1651. More importantly, it contains notations of several assignment of this property as follows:
1. On 24 Feb. 1659/60 John Maddison and Mary Madison, his wife, assigned to Thomas Jones. It describes the land as being above Richard Davis.
2. On 10 May 1660 Thomas Jones assigned to William Hurt.
3. On 3 Feb. 1682/83 William Hurt and Margaret Hurt assigned to William Nichalls (sic).

County, Virginia).
On 17th of March 1711-1712, The Vestry Book of Saint Paul's Parish, New Kent
County, Virginia (1704-1786), page 173, "At a Vestry held for Saint Paul's
Parish at ye lower Church March 17th 1711-1712 from the surveyors of the
precincts that the said Parish was divided into for processioning of lands by an
order of the said Parish Vestry held the 17th of 7ber 1711, are hereby according
to law, and an order of the said land Vestry made on the said 17th day of March,
Registered verbatim as they are returned.

Page 181, "The lands of Anthony Winston, Geo Vaughn, Robert Bumpass, Andrew
