Blacksburg, Oct. 13 (Special). - Oakley L. AKERS died at his home near
Blacksburg Thursday. Funeral services will be at Slusher's Chapel Saturday
at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Blacksburg.

SIDNEY E. AKERS
Radford, July 21 - Sidney E. AKERS, 45, of Christiansburg died of a heart
attack at Radford Arsenal today, shortly after reporting for work. Surviving
are his wife, Mrs. Glada S. AKERS, Christiansburg; his mother, Mrs. Maggie
SLUSSER AKERS; four brothers, Melvyn Frank, James and Charlie AKERS; a
sister,
Mrs. Marie MATTOX, all of Blacksburg. Funeral will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
at Richardson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.

LESTER L. ALBERT
Blacksburg, Aug. 11 (Special) - Lester Lankford ALBERT, 62, died here Sunday
morning at the home of his brother, J. E. ALBERT. He is survived by one
daughter, two sons, three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be
held at the Christian church Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be in
Westview cemetery.

ARCHIE K. ALLEN SR.
Blacksburg - Archie K. ALLEN Sr., 80, of Blacksburg, died Friday, Dec. 29,
1972, in a Shawsville nursing home. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Paul

PRICE Sr., Blacksburg, Mrs. Ralph S. COMPTON, Phoenix, Ariz.; two sons,
Kenneth E. ALLEN, Mapplecove La., Archie K. ALLEN Jr., Blacksburg; a sister,
Mrs. Fred SHEALOR, Blacksburg; a brother, Buford ALLEN, Blacksburg; eleven
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. The funeral was held Sunday, Dec.
31, at 2 p.m. at Hoy Funeral Home with burial in Westview Cemetery. Rev.
Edwin TROUTMAN officiated. Pallbearers were Don FAIN, Rodney WHITE, Freddie
OLINGER, Gene GREGORY, Deuayne SHEALOR, and Anderson REED.

W. D. (BILLY) ALLEN
Funeral services for W. D. (Billy) ALLEN, 45, of Blacksburg, were held Nov.
21, at 2 p.m., at Jones Funeral Chapel. Burial was in Westview Cemeter. Mr.
ALLEN, who was a business partner with his uncle, Buford ALLEN, in Allen
Coal
and Oil Company, was killed Nov. 18 when he apparently slipped and his rifle
fired accidentally while hunting in Craig County. Surviving are his wife,
Mrs. Robbie Lee ALLEN; two daughters, Mrs. Alva PERDUE and Miss Bonnie
ALLEN,
of Blacksburg; two sons, Claude K. ALLEN, of Christiansburg, and Ronnie
ALLEN,

Blacksburg, Jan. 31 - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth ALLS, 67, died today in Blacksurg.
She is survived by three sons; James, Leonard and Elliott ALLS; five
daughters; Mrs. Lawrence PRICE, Mrs. Clem LONG, Mrs. Hazen PRICE, Mrs.Cloyd
DOVE and Mrs. Leroy BLAND, all of Blacksburg; 25 grandchildren; eight great-
grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. B. L. MOREHEAD, McCoy. Services will be
held Monday at 2 p.m. at the home of her son, Leonard W. ALLS. Burial will
be
in Westview Cemetery.

CHARLES E. ATKINS DIES
Blacksburg, may 21 (Special) - Charles Ellet ATKINS, 58, and for some years
a
prominent farmer and stockman of the Roanoke Valley section of Montgomery
county, died suddenly early Tuesday morning at his home in Blacksburg.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the
residence, conducted by the pastor of Whisner Memorial Methodist church, Dr.
D. T. MERRITT. Burial will be in West View. Mr. ATKINS was the only son of
the later Mr. And Mrs. John ATKINS and is survived by his wife, formerly
Miss
Zora WILLIAMSON, of the Riner community, and one daughter, Miss Louise
ATKINS,
a member of the nursing staff of the Altamont hospital, Christiansburg. He
has many relatives in Giles county of which his parents were natives. His
mother died two months ago.

Fincastle, Aug. 2 - Henry Joseph BARNETT, 47, died unexpectedly at his home
here this morning. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Vaden BARNETT, two

MISS ROSA M. BARNETT
Blacksburg, Jan. 3 (Special) - Miss Rosa May BARNETT, 62, died today in a
local hospital. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Nancy DOWDY, Montgomery
county, and Mrs. Katherine THORNHILL, of West Virginia; and an adopted
daughter, Mrs. Buford ALLEN of Montgomery county. Services will be held here
at 2:30 p.m., tomorrow, at the home of Albert ALLEN, and burial will be in

Prices Fork - Tosh E. BARNETT, 74, died at his home here Saturday. Surviving
are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Sheppard BARNETT; three daughters, Mrs. John L.

ACIE TOBEY BISHOP
Salem - Acie Tobey Bishop, native of Blacksburg, died Sept. 10 at his home
in
Salem. Funeral was held Friday, Sept. 13 in Salem and interment was in
Sherwood Memorial Park. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alene PRICE BISHOP of
Salem; a son, Bruce Lee BISHOP of Salem; a brother, Jacob A. BISHOP of

D. W. BURKETT
Ironto, March 20 (Special) - Funeral services for D. W. BURKETT, age 96
years,
six months and 26 days, who died here Saturday night at his home here from
injuries received a few days ago when he fell at his home, breaking his hip,
were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Hall's church. Burial followed immediately.
Surviving are his widow, an adopted daughter, Miss Ironto BURKETT of this
place, a nephew, Willie Haley, of Roanoke.

Veterans Facility, Roanoke county. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. A. E.
CAMPER, of Blacksburg, a son, four brothers and two sisters. The funeral

Mrs Ann Laurie Thompson 99 died last Sunday after several years of failing
health, She became quiet ill approximately two weeks before her death.
Funeral services were conducted at the Park Methodist Church by Rev. R O
Brown and Rev. O W Pogan. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
Mrs Thompson resides at 501 Craig Street in Christiansburg for many years.
She was known as "Granny Thompson" to everyone who knew her.

in the United States Army in Vietnam.

Mrs Warren Gibson Jones native of Radford died Jan 21, 1968 in Washington
Dc. She was the widow of W G Jones who was a graduate of V.P.I. in 1912 and
until his death about 10 years ago was a large farmer in Fauquire County. He
was also a member of the school board and was active in other civic affairs.
Mrs. Jones was the daughter of the late Capt. And Mrs John Thomas Howe of
Radford. Funeral was in Trinity Episcopal Church with burial in the Ivy Hill
Cemetery Uppersville, Va. Surviving are two daughters, three sons, and 11
grandchildren.

Raymond Douglas (Doc) Camper Sr., 56, died suddenly of a heart attack at his
home on Sat. Feb. 10, 1968. He was a salesman for Bedford Grocery, active in
Masonic Circles, he was a postmaster in Hunter lodge 156 Blacksburg.
Surviving are his wife Mary Craft Camper, a son, Raymond D Camper Jr.,
Waynesborro, Va.; his mother Mrs H B Camper, Troutville; a brother Eddie
Camper, Cloverdale; Mrs Dorothy Hughes and Mrs Ester Firebaugh of
Troutville. The funeral was held at 2:00pm. Monday Feb. 12,1968 in
Blacksburg Christian Church. Interment was in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Rev. Cecil Taylor, a former pastor of the church, conducted the service.
Masonic Rites were held at the graveside. Pallbearers all post members of

Mrs. Nell Dangerfield Epperly widow of Lacey W Epperly 72 died Monday
2-19-1968 in Christiansburg. She had owned and operated the Epperly Dress
Shop here for the past 36 years.
She is survived by a son Howard B Epperly of Rockwood, Tn. A sister Mrs.
Wayne Lindsey of Christiansburg, three brothers; Harry Dangerfield of
Roanoke, E L Dangerfield of Denville NJ, and Rex Dangerfield of
Christiansburg.
Mrs. Epperly was called an institute in herself and her dress shop was known
as one of the loveliest specialty shops in southwest Virginia.
Final Rites were held at Richardson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Lyle
H Youell, pastor of the St. Paul Methodist Church at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday
afternoon. Paulbearers were Lacy W Sarver, J E Kirby, Harold Akers, Clarence
A Epperly, Cecil Huff, and W S Woods.
Interment was in Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg.

Funeral service was held Saturday March 22, 1968 at 11:00 a.m. at the

James Horace Luster 76, died March 5, 1968 in a Roanoke Hospital, a native
of Shawsville, Va., Mr. Luster was reared in Fincastle, VA.
He was the owner of Luster-Black Hardware Co in Roanoke.
Surviving are his wife Mrs. Sarah Smith Luster a stepdaughter, Mrs
ussell( Sue Burr) Cook Huntington, Wv.Interment was in Godwin Cemetery,
Fincastle with Dr Walker B Healey , and Rev. James M Murr conducting the

THE HENRY BULLETIN, Martinsville, Va., Fri., Jan. 24, 1919, p. 8, col. 3
[edited]. Mr. Ed. V. Childress was born Dec. 31, 1888, at Riner
(Montgomery County), Va., the son of Mr. and Mrs. V. W. Childress and died
at his home in Rocky Mount, Va. Jan. 13, 1919, after a short illness of
influenza, terminating in pneumonia. He was united in marriage Dec. 23,
1909, to Miss Nannie Richardson of Riner. Their first home was at Riner,
then at Martinsville, but for the past year at Rocky Mount, where he was
engaged in the livery business. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery. Out of

Robert Earl Mathena
Blacksburg- Robert Earl Mathena 54, died May 15 1977 in a local hospital.
Mathena was a past member of the Montgomery County School Board and a member
of the Public Service Authority. He was a past master of Hunters Masonic
Lodge # 156.He was an employee of RAAP in the supply department.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Southern Mathena; one daughter Mrs Alice
LoMascolo, Blacksburg; his mother Mrs Myrtle Price, Salemone sister, Mrs.
Margaret Sullivan, Blacksburg; two half sisters, Mrs. Wanda Gerald, Mrs.
Anza Fizer, Salem; two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at St. Michael Lutheran Church on May 17. The
Rev. Glen London and the Rev. Jacob Young officiated . Hunters Lodge # 156
conducted Masonic rites at the burial site in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

He was retired from Norfolk-Southern Railway and was an active member of the
Patterson Memorial Grace Brethren Church and a member of the Deacon Board,
Trustee and Evangelistic Committee. Bill is survived by his wife of 52
years, Lois S. Corell; two sons and daughter-in-law, W. J., Jr. and Sue
Corell, Kelly Corell; and friend, Vickie Wickham; one daughter and

father Chester Gordon Whitman died Jan.13, 1945 at his home,

Marion Lee Shank 74, of Otey, Montgomery County, died Monday
night around 10 o'clock (1-22-1945) in the new Altamont
Hospital from complications following a stroke which he
suffered several weeks ago. He was admitted to the local
hospital Saturday.

Mark J Lovern 50 who had been employed at the Christiansburg
Motor Corp. for the past 25 years, died suddenly at his home
Thursday, Jan 18, 1945 as a result of a heart ailment from
which he had suffered for a number of years.
Surviving are his wife Ada Martin Lovern, one son Pvt. Conway
Lovern USMC, three daughters Lorretta, Mary Ann, Betty Jane.
Also surviving are his father Larkin Lovern, two sisters, Mrs
Nathan Slemp of Cambria, Paul & Daniel Lovern of Elliott.

Walter F King, 50, died Monday afternoon 1-29-1945 at the
Radford Ordenence Works Hospital where he had been a patient
for several days following a heart attack which he suffered
at work.
Funeral services were held last Wednesday at 2pm. from
Richardson Funeral Home conducted by Rev. C A Tucker, pastor
of the St. Pauls Methodist Church. Interment was in Sunset
Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife Mrs. Virginia Smith King of
Christiansburg, three sons, two daughters, three brothers and
two sisters.

Mr. King was a well-known traveling salesman throughout the
southwest Va area for many years. He was born July 1, 1890,
and was the son of Anderson King and Jane Hodge King. He
traveled for the E W King Co. of Bristol Tn. for 15 years and
for the Cox Hat co. of Bristol for eight years. For the past
four years he worked at the Radford Ordnance Works. He was a
member of the Presbyterian Church.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Virginia Smith King, he is survived by
the following children, Mrs Claude Mitchell, Miss Jane King
of Christiansburg, Eugene King who is serving somewhere in
France. Harry King in California, and Floyd King of
Christiansburg.
Also surviving are three brothers, Robert King of Bristol,
Burton King of Johnson City Tn., Bruce King of California.

Elias W Altizer, 80, died Sunday evening 1-28-1945 at the New
Altomont Hospital, Christiansburg. He is survived by one
daughter, Mrs. Shelor Teel, and a son Cecil Altizer both of

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday evening at 2:00 pm
from Valley View Church and interment was in the Altizer
Cemetery at Chestnut Ridge.

Mr & Mrs J E Malley were called to Beckley, Wv. (2-2-1945)
Friday, on account of the death of Mrs. Malley's mother, Mrs.
Naomi King, 84, which occured there Friday from an extended
illness.

afternoon.
Survivors include five daughters, three sisters, 20 grand

Mrs. J T Spangler, died on Jan. 28, 1945, at the home of her
daughter Mrs. P D Shumate in Bristol, following a heartattack
which lasted for only 30 minutes.
Funeral services were held from the Cambria Babtist Church on
Jan. 30 at 2:00 o'clock by the Rev. Gerald Goss followed by
burial in Sunset Cemetery.
Mrs. Spangler was born in Floyd County Virginia on 9-4-1868
and was the former Mary Luther Basham. Her husband J T
Spangler died 24 years ago. Mrs Spangler had made her home in
Cambria for the past 24 years.
Ten Children survive who were all here to attend the funeral
services. They are: Mrs. J T Basham of Cambria, Mrs. J A
Shumaker of Covington; Mrs. P D Shumate of Bristol., Mrs. D R
Basham of Anawalt Wv., Mrs G H Dudley of Welch Wv., Mrs A L
Wagoner of Mont Caln Wv., Mrs C B Woolwine of Cambria, Sam P
Spangler of Welsh Wv., John R Spangler and Charles E Spangler
of California. Three children preceeded her in death.
Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Mrs.

Thomas Lynn Best, 44, a former resident of Christiansburg
died Friday in a Roanoke Hospital following an extended
illness.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock

Interment was in the family plot in Sunset Cemetery.

Shawsville - Mrs. Rosa LaPrade Correll age 91 passed away late Tuesday
night, Oct. 23, 1969 in a Christiansburg Hospital, She was the widow of
Christian S Correll.

E Woolwine, Moneta, Mrs. Charles Creasy, Grants Pass, Ore.; and two sons, A

John Wesley Shaver, seven year old, son of Mr. & Mrs. Billy Joe Shaver of
Rt. 3 Blacksburg, died Monday, July 13, 1970 in a Radford Hospital of
injuries sustained July 12, 1970 when the toy tractor he was riding was
struck by an automobile.

Mrs. Lucy Reed Akers, 81, died in her home in Alum Ridge district Sunday
Dec. 16. She was the widow of the late Dr. R. T. Akers, who was one of the
county's most useful citizens during his lifetime.
Funeral rites were conducted from the home with interment by the side of her
husband in the Akers' burial ground Monday Dec. 17.
The immediate survivors are 4 sons; Dr. Waller Akers of Stuart; Homer of
Roanoke; Newton Akers of Christiansburg; Chymer Akers of Floyd (Alum Ridge)
Among the other survivors are a number of grandchildren.

Abraham Rufus Wills, 79, died Monday afternoon at the home of his son G E
Wells near Blacksburg.
He is survived by another son P L Wells of Pittsburg, Pa; four daughters,

Pulaski; 22 grandchildren, a sister Mrs. J E Barton.
Services were conducted by the Rev. W C Brunk and Elder C E Jamison at the

daughter, Mrs. James J Keister at Prices Fork.

Hubert G ibbony Woodward Jr. 24, died in a Norfolk Hospital of bulbar type
Polio.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Hubert Gibbony Woodward. Mrs

Hostital.

Word has been received in Blacksburg of the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Duerson
Hartman of leukemia in a Charleston, S C. hospital after an illness of three
months.

Henry S Allen
Henry S Allen, of Ridgewood, NJ., formerly of Christiansburg, died in a
Ridgewood Hospital last Tuesday at the age of 59.
He is survived by his wife the former Miss Katherine Rangley, of
Christiansburg, five sisters, Miss Edith Allen, of Miami, Fl.; Miss Emily
Allen, Miss Mary Allen, and Mrs Charles W Crush, all of Christiansburg; and
Lt. Llorence Allen of Jonesville, and a brother, Col. Richard Allen also of
Miami Fl.
Allen was a sales manager for the Bennett Heat Treating Company of Newark, N
J.
He was a graduate of Christiansburg High School and attended the Newark
Engineering School in Newark. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and
a Mason.
Final rites for him were conducted here at Richardson Funeral Home at 10:30
last Friday by Dr. Cothran G Smith.
Pallbearers were Quinn Harless, Henry Stone,Jr., Everett Pharis, W R
Sheltonand James Haymaker, , all of Christiansburg, and Harry Dangerfield of
Roanoke. Interment was in Sunset Cemetery where Masonic rites were held,
conducted by John Myers, Jr.
