Johnny Poindexter LYNCHBURG DAILY VIRGINIAN 25 February, 1879 Page 3, Col. 1 Submitted by: Armand and Valerie Pena SAD AND PAINFUL ACCIDENT-- The Danville News of yesterday says: "Mr. Johnny Poindexter, a very respectable young man, met with his death under very sad circumstances at the residence of his brother in law, Mr Walter Bass, in Halifax County, Tuesday morning. Mr. Poindexter has for some time been teaching school near Republican Grove, in Halifaz, and spent Monday night with Mr. Bass, who lives only a short distance from the school house. Early Tuesday morning Mr. Poindexter arose and went out to curry his horse, and while in the act of so doing was kicked by the animal on the left temple, from the effects of which hedied almost instantly. Mr. Poindexter was a son of Captain Thomas Poindexter, of Campbell county, and brother of Mrs. T.M.Bass of Danville. E.L.Slaughter THE NEWS LYNCHBURG, VA 23 June 1939 Page 9 Col. 2 & 3 Submitted by: Armand and Valerie Pena E.L.Slaughter Bedford, June 22- Edward Lee Slaughter, 74 a native of Nottoway Court House, died at Jefferson Hospital, Roanoke, at 4:15 o'clock this morning. Mr. Slaughter was a son of Edward Franklin and Mary Page Vaden Slaughter and a member of the Methodist Church. His wife, who died seven years ago was the former Miss Julia Taylor of Lynchburg. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Chapel, Roanoke, Saturday morning at 10 'oclock, and burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery Lynchburg. Surviving children are Ralph E. Slaughter of Norfolk, Earl O. Slaughter of Roanoke, and Mrs Terrell May of Bedford. Five grandchildren survive and the following sisters and brother: Mrs. Palmer St. Clair and Mrs. Harvey Hall of Roanoke, Mrs T. E. Atkinson of Richmond, and Harry Slaughter of East Aurora, N.Y. Mrs. Julia Sydnor Slaughter THE NEWS LYNCHBURG, VA. 30 July 1932 Page 9 Col. 5 Submitted by: Armand and Valerie Pena Mrs. Julia Sydnor Slaughter Mrs. Julia Sydnor Slaughter , 71 years of age, died last night at 6:25 o'clock at her residence at Forest. She was a member of Forest Methodist Church. Surviving are the husband, Edward Lee Slaughter and the Following children; Mrs. Ruth M. May, Forest; Ralph E. Slaughter, Norfolk: and Earl O. Slaughter, Roanoke: sisters, Mrs Mallie Hawkins and Mrs, Bessie M. Poindexter, both of Richmond: and brothers, Oscar Taylor, Rawhide, Colo. (paper error, this should read Rawhide, Nev.) John O. and D. L. Taylor, both of Lynchburg: and Arthur H. Taylor , Belona, VA. Funeral services will be held at the residence Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment at Spring Hill cemetery. Daniel Forgie Taylor THE NEWS LYNCHBURG, VA 14 October, 1917 Page 5 Col. 3 Submitted by: Armand and Valerie Pena Daniel Forgie Taylor died Friday night at 11:30 o'clock at the home of his brother, John T. Taylor, 77 Federal street, after a lingering illness. He was the son of the late John Osborne and Elizabeth Taylor and was born at Leesville, February 2, 1841. He was, therefore, in his 77th year at the time of his death. At the age of 19 years, Mr Taylor, accompanied by his late brother, O. P. Taylor, of Wellsville, N. Y. went to South America, where he assisted in the construction of the first railroad there. Later he went West, making his home at Ajo, Arizona, where he managed his copper and gold mining interests until his health failed a year ago, when he returned to Virginia. Hecame here in March and from that time to his death had made his home with his only surviving brother, John T. Taylor. Mr. Taylor never married. The funeral will be held this morning at 10 o'clock from the residence of John T. Taylor, 77 Federal street, and the burial will be at Spring Hill cemetery. John Osborne Taylor Lynchburg Daily News 4 October 1885 Submitted by: Armand and Valerie Pena Death of an Old Inhabitant--- Mr. John Osborne Taylor, an old and widely known citizen, died yesterday morning at his home on Garland Hill, aged seventy six years. Mr. Taylor was born at Hartford. Conn. but removed to Virginia at the early age of sixteen years. He made Lynchburg his home in 1852 and has resided here ever since; and for many years he was prominently identified with the tobacco trade of this city as an inspector at one of the principal warehouses. He always took a lively interest in public affairs and was once, from 1866 to 1868 a member of the City Council. Years ago he connected himself with the Masonic fraternity and at the time of his death was a member in good standing of Marshall Lodge. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, having made a profession of faith forty-one years ago at the memorable Yellow Branch camp- meeting held in 1844. He was a man of earnest convictions and positive in his expressions, but with kind heart and reasonable under all circumstances. His is the second death that has occurred in his family forty years, the first being that of one of his sons, Mr. O.P. Taylor, who died about 2 years ago in New York State, after years of great business activity. Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife and three sons, who have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their affliction. Mr. John T. Taylor The News: LYNCHBURG, VA 2 April, 1918 Page 6 Col. 6 Submitted by: Armand and Valerie Pena Funeral of Mr. John T. Taylor The funeral services of Mr. John T. Taylor, who died Friday at St. Petersburg, Fla., were held yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the residence, 77 Federal street, the body having arrived from Florida about 3:35 p.m. The services were conducted by Rev. Dr. John Hannon, assisted by Rev. Dr. George E. Brooker and Rev. J.C. robertson. The hymns "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" and "Home of the Soul" were sung at the house by Messrs. Malcolmn Gannaway and Lewis Campbell, and Mrs.John M. Otey and Mrs.Frank Jones, who also sang the hymn "How Firm a Foundation" at the grave in Spring Hill cememtery. All the children and grandchildren of Mr. Taylor were at the funeral except Mr. O.H.Taylor and family, of Nevada. Among those who atteded were the officers of Kirkwood-Otey Chapter, U. D. C. and a handsome floral design was sent by the chapter. The active pallbearers were: Earl O. Slaughter, Ralph E. Slaughter, J. Osborn Taylor, Jr., Daniel L. Taylor, Jr., John T. Poindexter and Samuel F. Poindexter, Jr., all the grandsons of the deceased. The Honorary pallbearers were: I.H. Adams, Jr., E. E. Menefee, John W. Childs, N. H. Lavinder, John BellWinfree, Dr. John W. Dillard, Major James T. Yates, S. B. Rucker, E. B. Ewart, John D. Oglesby, R. W. Younger, Maury R. Good, major Stephen P. Halsey and George L. Fleming. MRS. TAYLOR THE NEWS LYNCHBURG, VA 17 Sept, 1909 Page 6 Col. 4 Submitted by: Armand and Valerie Pena DEATH OF MRS. TAYLOR Passed away last night after a Protracted Illness. Mrs. John T. Taylor died at 11:20 last night at her home on Federal street, after an illness of several weeks. Mrs. Taylor was before marriage Miss Sarah Jones, daughter of Rev. Thomas and Mrs. Susan Walker Jones, her father being a well known Methodist minister. She was married to Mr. John T. Taylor on September 28, 1854. At the time of her death she was seventy-six years of age, having been born in Lynchburg October 6, 1832. All her life with the exception of a few years was spent in Lynchburg, where she has a host of friends who will mourn her death. Mrs. Taylor was a devoted Christian, spending much of her time working for the church. Early in life she joined Court Street Methodist church but later changed her membership to Rivermont Avenue Church, where she belived she could be of more service to the cause of the Master. She was a devoted mother, a loving wife and beloved by all who knew her. Five years ago she and her husband celebrated their golden wedding, all of her children, with the exception of one, being present. Early yesterday Mrs. Taylor foresaw that death would soon overtake her, and callling her family around her gave minutte instructions as to the conduct of her funeral. She is survived by her husband, Mr. John T. Taylor, the well known tobacconist, and seven children, three daughters and four sons, as follows: Mrs. H. A. Hawkins, of Richmond: Mrs. E. Lee Slaughter, of Roanoke: Mrs. S. F. Poindexter, of this city, and Messrs. Oscar H., of Rawhide, Nev; Arthur H., of Danville., Daniel L. and John Osborne Taylor, of this city.
