A Short History of Lunenburg County

See the History Page for an expanded History

The first successful European colonization effort in Virginia was when a London Company expedition landed in Virginia in May 1607.  They established Jamestown Colony in the name of England's King James I which was the beginning of Virginia's history of settlement by Europeans.  The London Company ruled the Virginia settlement until 1624 when the monarchy took complete control of Virginia.  Four original "corporations" for the populated areas were established in 1617.  By 1619, the colonists had established some local control by initiating elected officials known as the House of Burgesses.  The eight original Shires/Counties were established in 1634.  They were Accawmack (Northampton - 1643), Charles City, Elizabeth City, Henrico, James City, Warrosquoyacke (Isle of Wight - 1637) and Warwick River Counties.  Prince George County was formed from Charles City County in 1703 and Brunswick County was formed from Prince George County in 1732.  Lunenburg County was formed from the western portion of Brunswick County in 1745.  The county name reflected one of the titles of King George II, who was also the Duke of Brunswick-Lunenburg in the German states.  In 1752, Halifax County was created from the southwestern part of Lunenburg.  In 1753, Bedford County was established from the northwestern portion of Lunenburg County and part of Albemarle County.  Another addition from Lunenburg to Bedford came in 1754 when land west of the mouth of Falling River was given to Bedford.  In 1764, both Charlotte and Mecklenburg counties were created from Lunenburg land, and in 1777 a part of Charlotte's holdings were returned to Lunenburg.  Lunenburg County achieved its present boundaries at that time.
