State of Virginia } to wit
Loudoun County }
on this 12th day of November 1833 personally appeared in open Court before the Court of Loudoun County now sitting Benjamin Wigginton a resident of said County & State aged about seventy years who being duely sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That he entered the service of the United States in the winter or spring of 1781 & marched from the County of Loudoun under the command of Capt. William Lane & joined Colo Meriwethers Regiment at Head quarters. Maj’r [Samuel] Cox acted as Major. He volunteered his service as a Substitute for his brother & served three months. He served in the neighbourhood of York & Williamsburg & was in action near the latter place [possibly Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary (Hot Water Plantation) 6 mi NW of Williamsburg, 26 Jun 1781] in which Thos. Dandle & Benja Bullitt fell. Gen’l. Lafayette & Gen’l. [Anthony] Wayne were then in service both of whom he saw in one or other of his Tours of duty but was not acquainted with any of the Regular officers
He farther states that immediately after his return he was drafted from the aforesaid County & marched in Cap. William Beaver’s company under the command of Colo John Alexander & performed a tour of duty of more than three months & retreated into the Counties of Orange & Culpeper.
He also states that he has no discharge & that there is no Clergyman living in his neighbourhood with whom he is acquainted [signed] Benjamin igginton
