2013 BOOK REVIEW: Kingston Parish, Mathews County, VA
Included here because James City
County has lost so many early records. While not
specifically about James City County, this book may
contain information about people who lived in the
county.
Kingston Parish Register: Mathews, Gloucester and
Middlesex Counties, Virginia - Slaves and Slaveholders,
1746-1827, by Martha W. McCartney
108 pages; paper; every name index, list of
slaveholders and years of reporting; brief history of
Mathews County, Kingston Parish and the Kingston Parish
Register and over 1800 alphabetically listed entries of
slave births and baptisms. Available at Genealogical.com.
This slim volume is well-arranged, well-indexed and
packed with new information that was deliberately
omitted from earlier publications of the Kingston
Parish register. The format gives slave's name,
owner's name, birth or baptism date, or both, and
page number of the parish register.
Information about these previously neglected
individuals should be of interest to everyone
researching African-American families in Virginia. The
separate list of slaveholders and years of reporting
gives a succinct snapshot of economic activities of
those families, too. Because slaves could be sold or
rented out of the area where they had been born, any of
these individuals could have been moved during their
lifetimes to other nearby counties. This fact broadens
the interest of this information beyond the boundaries
of Kingston Parish and Mathews County.
This is a highly valuable resource from a
well-respected historian. It fills in a large gap in
the previously available published records of Mathews
County and Kingston Parish. Highly recommended.
