Powhatan's Chimney
POWHATAN'S CHIMNEY, overlooking the York River,
is located in lower Gloucester County, near Timberneck Creek.
It has long been considered to be the chimney attached to the
house that Emperor Powhatan requested of John Smith. Whether
or not this is true, it is an ancient landmark overlooking the
York River at its most spectacular. Once almost totally destroyed,
it was rebuilt in the 1930's by the Joseph Bryan Branch of the
Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA).
Marl, the original material obtained from a nearby island, was
used for the reconstruction. |
