WILLIAM ARMSTED (ARMISTEAD)*

April 17, 1834, Mathews Co., Va., William (X) Armsted, age 76, declares that he entered service in the latter part of 1776 under Capt. Robert Gayle by order of Sir John Peyton, Colonel, to enroll him and served one month at Point Comfort. In 1777 he was called out under the same officers for two months and again for two months. In 1778 at the same place he again served two and one-half months. In the same year he was at Pepper Creek where the barges came up and there was a little engagement and then at Point Comfort for three months.

In 1779 he served two and one-half months under the same officers and then for two months. In 1780 he served three months under Capt. Peter Barnet and Col. Boswell and was ordered to go to Pepper Creek to drive off barges. He next served for two months at Point Comfort and had many engagements with the barges. When attached to Capt. Gayle's company, he was relieved by Capt. Barnet's company and when attached to Capt. Barnet's company, he was relieved by Capt. Gayle's company.

In 1781 he was called to go to Williamsburg under Capt. John Billups by order of Col. Boswell, when the British came up the James River. They marched to Gloucester C.H. and heard that the British has retreated so returned home. He served a month. He was called out with all the Gloucester Militia to go to Gloucester Towne under the same officers and marched to Hubbard's Old field, then to Seawell's Old field and then to Gloucester Towne and was in a severe engagement and served three months in 1782. He served six weeks at Point Comfort under Capt. Peter Barnet when some British vessels lay off in the bay. In the Same year he served one month. He was b. in Kingston Parish, Gloucester Co., in 1758 and has lived there ever since. Pen. S. 12001. (National Archives).

William Armsted of Mathews Co., Va., private in the regiment of Col. Boswell in the Va. Line for two years was placed on the Virginia Pension Roll at $80.00 per annum under the Act of 1832; certif. 23954 was issued April 30, 1834. He d. Feb. 4, 1836.
