The "Continental Line" simply refers to Federal, as opposed to State and militia forces. The Virginia Line is composed of units which were recruited from Virginia. Same with other states. There was also Virginia regulars and county militias. Most of the regulars were incorporated at one time or another into the Federal forces. The distinction is who paid the bills.Records/rosters were kept at the Federal level. Funding wasn't available at the state and county levels to maintain and keep records. That's why there are so few records to substantiate involvement other than Continental Line forces.

Notation: Not sure of Morgan's Rifles other than they were mostly from Fauquier/Culpeper. They may have been part of the Fauquier militia. Not sure though. Jim Ball
