Peter Cornwell Family Who was the wife of Peter Cornwell? Who was the Anne Cockrell who witnessed Peter Cornwell's Willl? Is there a Shumate Relationship? I am not descended from the Peter Cornwell who left his will in 2 Jun 1776 in Fauquier County, Virginia; however, I am constantly referring to this family with the thought that I may be connected in three ways. 1. Was Sarah Ann mentioned in the Will also the wife of Daniel James? 2. Who is Ann Cockrell who witnessed this will? 3. Simon Cornwell witnessed the will of Anderson Cockrell. Is there a connection? Peter Cornwell's will is found in the Abstracts of Fauquier County, Virginia Will, Inventories and Accounts 1759-1800 by John K. Gott, 1972, page 75. Will Book 1 page 293-295 Peter Cornwell Will Date: 2 Jun2 1776 Wife: Sarah Ann - the used of all my estate both real and personal for and during her widowhood (except the legacies hereinafter mentioned Daughter: Mary - one Good Feather bed and furniture and one cow and calf to be given up to her at the day of marriage or when she arrives to the Age of twenty one years Son: Daniel - one dark bay mare commonly called his Son: Jacob - one horse of the value of twelve or fourteen pounds Son: Simon - the land whereon he lives agreeable to the boundaries made between him & myself supposed to be about 25 acres. Son: Jarvice: the land between the Ledge of Rocks and his own line also the land on the south side of his path to the Main Road, this Land I agreed for and bout of Hector Ross, Gent. Sons: Daniel and Jacob - all my land at the Pignut Ridge except what is already bequeathed = to be held in joint tenancy to them and their heirs - if eith of them die without issue the survivor to have the whole - if both should die with out issue - the land to be sold and the price arising from the sale be .....on death or marriage of wife all slaves and personal estate be equally divided amongs my children then living except my two sons Daniel and Jacob. Jim Burgess 23 Sep 1793 Simon Cornwell & Peter Cornhill mentioned in the closing estate of John Nelson Other Cornwell Researchers Daniel SHUMATE Will Will of Daniel Shumate Leeds Parish, Fauquier County 29 January 1806 In the name of God Amen, I, Daniel Shumate of Fauquier County of Leeds Parish being weak of body but of Sound and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following: that is to say, first I commend my soul to God its Creator in all humble hope of its future happiness through the only merits of my blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and my body to the ground to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter named and as to worldly estate which God has been pleased to bless me with, I give and bequeath as followeth. Imprimes. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Sarah Ann Shumate, one feather bed and furniture, one negro fellow named Jo and all the corn and provision now in my possession for the support of the plantation this year to her and her heirs forever. It is also my will and desire that the negro fellow belonging to John Paris and the negro wench belonging to my son William after my death shall remain on the plantation this year as my sons Mark and William promised me if I rented aplan(?) and began a crop they should do so. Item the rest of my estate after the rents and my just debts are paid and one third part given to my wife are to be equally divided between my daughter Judah Parris, Duanna Johnston, Dinah Luttrell and my son Samuel Shumate but in case John Parris takes his negro away, his wife is to have no part of it and to be divided between the other three. Lastly I nominate and appoint my son William Shumate and John Paris executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other by me heretofore made.
