John Frogge - House of Burgesses

John Frogge, a member of The House of Burgesses, was born about 1709 in Hamilton Parish, now a part to Fauquier County.

09 November 1738 John married Elizabeth Strother in Overwharton Parrish, Stafford County, VA. Elizabeth, 1721 - after 1795, is the daughter of William Strother and Margaret Watts Strother of King William County, VA. John and Elizabeth moved to the Valley of Virginia to live by Elizabeth's sisters and brother-in-laws.

Born of this marriage were eight children:
William Frogge b. 1741 in Fauquier County, VA and d. 1830 in Fentress County, TN. In 1770, William married Mary Mitchell (1753-1804) of the Valley of Virginia, and daughter of Cornelius and Jane Mitchell. William and Mary's son, Arthur Robinson Frogge, was one of the first settlers of Fentress County, TN.

Arthur Frogge, birth date unknown, was killed in a duel in 1771.

John Frogge, born 26 May 1745. He married Agatha Lewis, of Augusta County in 1770. Agatha Lewis is the daughter of Thomas Lewis of Donegal County, Ireland, and Jane Strother (sister of Elizabeth). John Frogge was killed, 10 October 1774, at Point Pleasant, VA in the battle between the Virginia forces (Commanded by General Andrew Lewis) and the Indians by Cornstalk. Point Pleasant, VA was the site of the first day of battle of the American Revolution. Capt. John was one of forty-six officers and soldiers killed on that day. His name is among those listed on the Point Pleasant Battle Monument.

Jane Frogge, 1741 - 1842, married Manoah Corley of Fauquier County, VA.

Mary Frogge, 1738 - 1810, married John Lewis Cawardin of Kent County, MD

Three other daughters, Margaret, Rachel and Agatha, were born of this marriage, but very little is know of their life.

March, 1756, The House of Burgesses, meeting in Williamsburg,VA passed an act for raising militia in the counties of Fairfax, Prince William, Culpeper and Hampshire to man a line of forts from Great-Cape Capon in Hampshire Co. to the south fork of the Mayo River in Halifax. The Prince William militia was commanded by Major John Frogg.

It is known that John Frogge was the Sheriff of Prince William County in 1757

17th of May, 1759, sufficient pressure had been brought to push the bill for the creation of Fauquier Co. through the House of Burgesses, the justices first appointed included Thomas Harrison, Joseph Blackwell, John Wright, William Blackwell,John Frogg, John Bell, William Eustace, John Churchill, William Grant, John Crump, Duff Green, Yelverton Peyton, Thomas Marshall, George Lambkin, Wharton Ransdell, Elias Edmonds, Thomas McClanahan and Richard Foote, Gentlemen.

John and his son, William Frogge, signed a petition to form Greenbrier County, VA in 1777. The original is located in the Virginia State Library at Richmond.

Know all men by these presents that I Elizabeth Frogge of Bath Co in the State of VA, executor of the last will and testament of John Frogge deceased, for divers good cause and consideration, we hereinto moving grace made, ordained, constituted and appointed and by those present do make, constate and appoint John Cowardine in the county and state aforesaid my true and lawfully attorney for me and in my name and for my use to do and perform all and singular the last will and testament of the John Frogge deceased and particularly to ecover the lands mentioned in the aforesaid will lying in Culpepper Co and all the lands elsewhere and finely to aid and perform all and singular the items of the said will in as full and ample a manner as I myself could do hereby ratifying and confirming all and whatso ever my said attorney shall lawful do or cuase to become in and touching the premises in as full and ample manner as if I myself had been personally present.

In witness thereof I the said Elizabeth Frogge have hereto set my hand seal this 14th day of Jul 1795.

Minute Book 1752-1753 25 Jun 1753 page 164 The report of John Wright and John Frogg Gent being returned upon their reviewing a way from Beverleys Ford to the Road leading from Hedgman's Quarter to Marsh Bridge, the rolling road commonly calleed Jones Rolling road is hereby established and for the future to be deemed and taken a Public way.

Order Book 1754-1755 page 1 24 Jan 1754 At the Courthouse of Prince William County the 28th day of January in the year of our Lord God one thousand seven hundred and fifty four a commision of Peace together with a Dedimus for administring the oaths being produced and read as usual Thomas Harrison gent haven taken the oaths appointed to be taken and repeated and subscribed the test administred the said oaths and test to Benjamin Grayson, John FROGG, Bertrand Ewell and Howson Hooe gent who took theri places as Justices, etc.

page 263 28 May 1755 Order Book 1754-1755 At the Court House of Prince William County the 28th day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty five A commission of the peace with a Dedimus for administring the Oaths being produced and read as usual John Frogg gent have taken the oaths appointed to be taken and repeated and subscribed the test administred the said oaths and test to John Churchill, John Bell and John Bailis gent who took their places as Justices, etc. At a court held for Prince William County the 28th of July 1755.
page 268 28 Jul 1755 On the petition of George Johnston and Thomas Machen agt the executors of William Farrow deceased, ordered the said executors give them county security or deliver up to them the estate of the said Deceased in their Hands. Then the court adjourned till the court in Course. John Frogg . . . . Robert Swift being committed to the Goal of this county by a precept under the hand of John Frogg gent one of the Justices of the peace for the said county dated this 26th day July last on suspicion of Felony, being this day examinined and the witnesses being against him, and all Circumstances relaing to the said fact.

page 247 Order Book 1755-1758 22 Nov 1756 John Frogg gent sheriff protested against the Goal of this county is not sufficient to detain prisoner herein. .... By a fraction in Colo. John Froggs hand 576 pounds of tobacco.

page 324 Order Book 1755-1758 The Sheriff pursuant to an order of this court for viewing an acre of land belonging to John Graham returned the juryus report which is as followeth "Prince Wm s in obedience to the above order I have twelve free and lawfull men of my county they being first sworn been on the land s of John Graham and have diligently examined the lands adjacent there to and also have considered what damage the said John Graham may sustain by means of Bertrand Ewell building a Mill on Quantico Run and do agree taht the acres of land where the said Ewell is to erect his millis of value of two pounds three shillings current money and no more.
