Will of Robert Greenway
22 November 1837

In the name of God, Amen, I Robert Greenway of the County of Dinwiddie, do make, ordain and publish this my last will and testament in form and manner following to wit:

I desire that my whole estate except such specific legacies as may hereinafter be made, to be divided between my wife and children ( and when I use the word "children" I mean those I now have and also such as may hereafter be born to me) in such manner as the proportion falling to my wife shall be equal to that falling to each child, that is to say if I should have five children I desire one-sixth part of my estate to be allotted to my wife for life, and then the remainder to be equally divided between my children, the whole estate however, except my wife's share be kept undivided for the support and education of all my children, until my oldest child shall marry or become of age when its proportion is to be allotted off the residue then is still to be kept together and each child's share allotted off to him or her successively as they may marry or become of age, it is my further wish and desire that my wife should be allowed as much pork, corn, oats and fodder as shall serve for the support of her family for one year after my death. Also my carriage and horses, the household and kitchen furniture and as many hogs, cattle, work horses and plantation utensils of different kinds as may be necessary to keep up the plantation with the force she will then have; it being my wish that my children should live with my wife without any charge being made by her for their board, and it is in consideration of this that this last bequest is made. At the death of my wife, however, the property left her is to revert to my estate, and be divided among my children in the same manner as I have above directed in regard to the bulk of my estate, I desire that my servants Fed and Kezia be allotted to. my children that they may remain on the plantation with my wife and children, :rendering services to them without subjecting my wife to the payment of any hire for them. And I give special charge to my executors and children to see that said slaves be always well treated. I wish my slaves George, Charles and his wife Jenny be allowed to remain on the plantation with my wife and children and whenever their services shall not be worth their support they are to be maintained by my executors at the charge of my. estate. I leave to my son James when he arrives to lawful age my watch, sword, family pictures, my library and little gun. I hereby appoint my nephew Richard Hill and Thomas Withers, Jr. executors of this my last will and testament and guardian to my children.

In testimony whereof I hereby subscribe my name and affix my seal this the 22nd day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty-seven.

At a Court held for Dinwiddie County on the 18th of December 1837.

This the last will and testament of Robert Greenway, deceased was proved by the oaths of Hubbard Wyatt, John H. Edwards and Edward A. Wyatt subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Richard Hill, executor therein named, who made oath thereto and together with Joseph Goodwyn, Isaac Roney, Richard H. Parham, John H. Edwards, Green Hill, Hubbard Wyatt and John M. Wynn his securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of one hundred and twenty thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of the said will in due form.
