In the name of God Amen. I James Bishop of the County of
Dinwiddie now sick and weak but of perfect mind and memory and
recollecting the uncertainty of all human events, do hereby make and
Ordain this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form
following to wit:
Item. At my death I give and bequeath to my five children by name
James Bishop, Wyatt Bishop, Robert Bishop,
Armistead Bishop and William Bishop my tract of land, on
which I now live, say two hundred & twenty eight & 3/4 acres to be
equally divided by striking a line every time commencing at the
meally branch and leading out to the lands of Hughty Perkins
and for my son James Bishop to have the part on which he now
lives, to them their heirs and assigns forever.
Item. At my death, I give and bequeath to my son James Bishop
two negroes by name Fanny & Lucinda an their increase to him his
heirs and assigns forever.
Item. At my death, I give and bequeath to my son Wyatt Bishop
two negroes by name Ben & Charles. One feather bed & two sheets to
him his heirs and assigns forever.
Item. At my death, I give and bequeath to my son Robert Bishop
two negroes by name Maria & Frank one feather bed to him his heirs
and assigns forever.
Item. At my death, I give and bequeath to my son Armistead
Bishop, two negroes by name Henry & Celia one feather bed & two
sheets to him his heirs and assigns forever.
Item. At my death, I give and bequeath to my daughter Susan
Jackson formerly Susan Bishop one negro by name Amy & her
increase to her, her life, and at her death to be equally divided
between her living children, and my daughter Nancy Jackson's
living children formerly Nancy Bishop to them their heirs and
assigns forever.
Item. At my death I give and bequeath to my son William Bishop
three negroes by name John, Mary & Billy and their increase one
black horse called nigger, one still, one feather bed & two sheets
to him his heirs and assigns forever.
Item. At my death, I give and bequeath to my Grandson James
Alexander Bishop, one negro by name Tom, my riding saddle &
bridle, one one-day clock and one feather bed & two sheets to him
his heirs & assigns forever.
Item. At my death, I give and bequeath to my Grandsons Thomas M.
Bishop & William H. Bishop and my Grand-daughter
Rebecca A. Moore formerly Rebecca A. Bishop, five dollars
each to them their heirs and assigns forever.
The balance of my property not named in my will, I leave to pay my
just debts, say, five negroes Ned, Lewis, Lizzy, Linsey & Betsey
besides some personally [sic] property. I wish the aforesaid five
negroes to be appraised and for the legatees to take them at the
appraisement and if the said property I have left to pay my debts
should more than pay them the overplus to be equally divided between
James Bishop, Wyatt Bishop, Robert Bishop,
Armistead Bishop, Susan Jackson & William Bishop
legatees, and if there should not be a sufficiency left to pay my
just debts the aforesaid six legatees shall pay in equal proportion,
so as to discharge the debts.
And lastly, I do hereby constitute and appoint my son William
Bishop Executor to this my last will & testament. In witness my
hand and seal this 2nd day of June one thousand eight hundred and
forty two.

At a court held for Dinwiddie County on the 17th day of February
1845
This Last Will and Testament of James Bishop decd was proved
by the oaths of Robert Gibbs and H. H. Lewis
subscribing witness thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the
motion of William Bishop Executor therein named who made oath
thereto and entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of
twelve thousand dollars with William H. Goodwyn and
Hartwell H. Lewis his securities conditioned as the law directs,
a certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of said will in
due form.
