XXVIII JACOB FRANKLIN6, MARY HARRIET CORNELIA,
SAMUEL STOWE PEGRAM7, son of Jacob Franklin Pegram and Mary Elvina Stowe, was born 19 August 1848. He married Elizabeth Parks in 1872. She was born 28 May 1855 and died in January 1921. They had nine children: GEORGE8, WALTER, WINCHESTER, FRANKLIN L., SAMUEL, NATHANIEL, MARY LOUISE, CHARLES DAVIES and HARRY. SUSAN LARKIN PEGRAM7, daughter of J. Franklin Pegram and Mary E. Stowe, was born 2 May 1853 and died in 1900. She married Robert Andrews Ratchford and they had MARY8, who married a Mr. Carpenter, and they had a DAUGHTER8. MARGARET ELIZABETH PEGRAM7, daughter of J. Franklin Pegram and Mary E. Stowe, was born 27 April 1859, and died 19 August 1862. WILLIAM LEE PEGRAM7, son of J. Franklin Pegram and Mary E. Stowe, was born 19 March 1866. He married Alice Violet Rumfelt. They had eight children, four of whose names were known as follows:
MARY HARRIET CORNELIA PEGRAM6, daughter of Winchester Pegram and Mary Stowe, was born 25 May 1825, and died 10 October 1906, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She married Hiram Nelson Ward, 11 January 1844 (Marriage bond dated 3 November 1843, Lincoln County, N.C.) They had issue:
EDWARD LARKIN PEGRAM6, son of Winchester Pegram and Mary Stowe, was born 7 January 1828, and died 23 June 1904. He married Juletta McGee Rhyne, 16 May 1857. Juletta 172 was born 22 September 1833, and was the daughter of Daniel and Louise McGee Rhyne. The wedding was solemnized at the old Rhyne home, built in 1799, near Stanley, North Carolina (127), where they lived and were buried. Edward Larkin Pegram volunteered for Confederate Service in July 1861, with the "Gaston Invincibles", Company B., 28th Regiment, under Capt. Theodore H. Edwards, Col. Lane commanding. He was appointed 2nd. Lt., and then 1st. Lt. He fought in the battle of Gettysburg, and was severely wounded in the face on the third day of the fight. After being disabled he served as Quartermaster Sergeant, and remained in Virginia until the end of the war. "In World War I Edward Larkin Pegram had more descendants serving in that war than any other man from Gaston County, who had served in the Confederacy" (127). The Index to Land Deeds of Gaston County, North Carolina lists many transactions by Edward Larkin Pegram, primarily during the period 1876 to 1912. Edward Larkin and Juletta had seven children: MARY ALICE', LAURA LOUISE, SARAH IDA, EDWARD ALBURTUS, ERNEST LUCIUS, JESSIE VIOLA and LELIA EDNA. MARY ALICE PEGRAM7, daughter of Edward Larkin Pegram and Juletta Rhyne, was born 8 March 1853. She married Marcus Lafayette Mason 25 November 1873. He was born 20 December 1845, the son of L.A. Mason and Katherine Lineberger. Marcus Lafayette was a Sergeant of Company C., 71st. Regt. C.S.A. Mary Alice and Marcus Lafayette had nine children: LAURA ESTELLE8, WILLIE ROBERT, JULIA KATE, SALLIE BLANCHE, CARRIE MAY, WALTER LAFAYETTE, ALICE PEGRAM, CLARA EDITH and PAUL ANDERSON, (128). LAURA ESTELLE8, b. 18 Jan. 1875; m. Hal McDonald, son of James McDonald and Mary Frances Johnston of Charlotte, N.C.; c. ten as follows:
WILLIE ROBERT MASON8, b. 22 Oct. 1876;
d. 15 May 1878. JULIA KATE, b. 19 April 1878; d. 5 Oct. 1880. LAURA LOUISE PEGRAM7, daughter of Edward Larkin Pegram and Juletta McGee Rhyne, was born 1 November 1856 and died in 1925. She married Robert Smith Reinhardt, 13 February 1879. He was the son of Franklin M. and Sarah Smith Reinhardt, and was born 1 January 173 1858. He died 11 September 1925. He was a merchant at Iron Station, North Carolina. Later he and Stephen Smith bought the Ivy Shoals Cotton Mill in Lincolnton, North Carolina. After the death of Robert Reinhardt, his son Robert Stephen8, succeeded him in the business. Laura Louise and Robert had six children: DAISY LOUISE REINHARDT8 was born 7 March 1880. She married Frederick McDonald, 2 December 1902. They had issue: ELIZABETH FORNEY McDONALD9, born 25 September 1903. She married Harold Frederick Krause, 19 April 1924, and they had:
LAMAR McDONALD9, son of Daisy Louise Reinhardt and Frederick McDonald, was born 10 April 1907. LAURA PEGRAM McDONALD9, daughter of Daisy Louise Reinhardt and Frederick McDonald, was born in 1908. She married William Anderson Derryberry, 7 November 1945. They had NANCY ELIZABETH10), born in 1946 and LAURENCE WILLIAM, born 1948. SARAH MARJIE REINHARDT8, daughter of Laura Louise Pegram and Robert Smith Reinhardt, was born and died in 1882. ROBERT SHIPP REINHARDT8, son of Laura Louise Pegram and Robert Smith Reinhardt, was born in 1883 and died in 1885. LENA FORNEY REINHARDT8, daughter of Laura Louise Pegram and Robert Smith Reinhardt, was born 22 June 1886 and died in 1970. She first married George A. Brown and they had issue: GANGETTA WHEELOCK BROWN9 was born 17 December 1915. She married Kenneth Heavner and they had MICHAEL10 and DAVID. ROBERTA BROWN9, daughter of Lena Forney Reinhardt and George A. Brown, was born 8 September 1918. She married Troy Chatham, and they had CHRISTOPHER10. LENA FORNEY REINHARDT8, daughter of Laura Louise Pegram and Robert Smith Reinhardt, was married a second time to Joseph Graham. Lena was for many years Historian for Lincoln County, North Carolina, and did much work to preserve the history of the area (120). VICTOR EARNEST REINHARDT8, son of Laura Louise Pegram and Robert Smith Reinhardt, was born 1 January 1889 and died unmarried in 1910. ROBERT STEPHEN REINHARDT8, son of Laura Louise Pegram and Robert Smith Reinhardt, was born 19 October 1891. He married Leila Crosby Harmon, 25 September 1919. She was the daughter of Albert W. and Lina Jennings Harmon. They had issue:
SARAH IDA PEGRAM7, daughter of Edward Larkin Pegram and Juletta McGee Rhyne, was born 11 November 1858, and died 16 October 1932. She married John Onslow Rankin, 24 September 1884, in Gaston County, North Carolina. He was the son of James Carpenter Rankin and Susan Davenport. John died in Gaston County, 5 March 1945. John Onslow and Sarah Ida had five children (128): VIVIAN PEGRAM8, JOHN ONSLOW JR., JULETTA MAUD, RICHARD WINCHESTER and HENRY McADEN, died 15 November 1979. VIVIAN PEGRAM RANKIN8 was born at Iron Station, Lincoln County, North Carolina, 21 July 1885, and died 24 April 1974. He married Annie Warren Venable, 26 August 1909, and they had: JOSEPH TROTTER9, born 30 March 1921, in Texas; and VIRGINIA VENABLE, 174 born 25 February 1925, in the State of Washington. She married Richard Cramer Yates of Modesto, California (130). JOHN ONSLOW RANKIN JR.8, son of Sarah Ida Pegram and John Onslow Rankin, was born in Dallas, North Carolina, 17 November 1891. He married Placide Winnifred Dunford, December 1917. They had four children: JOHN ONSLOW RANKIN III9 married Henrietta Benefield of Beaufort South Carolina. John was with the sixth Marines in World War II, and was killed on the Island of Okinawa in June 1945. They had a child MONICA MONTGOMERY10, of Beaufort, South Carolina. MARGARET PEGRAM RANKIN9, daughter of John Onslow Rankin Jr. and Placide Winnifred Dunford, married Jack Rhodes of Lincolnton, North Carolina. They had issue: JOHN RANKIN10 and DAVID HENRY. JAMES THOMAS RANKIN9, son of John Onslow Rankin Jr. and Placide Winnifred Dunford, married Judith Foster in New Mexico. He was a veteran of World War II. They had DANIEL10 and MICHAEL. PLACIDE WINNIFRED RANKIN9, daughter of John Onslow Rankin Jr. and Placide Winnifred Dunford, married Dale Hunsucker of Conover, North Carolina. JULETTA MAUD RANKIN8, daughter of John Onslow Rankin and Sarah Ida Pegram, was born in Dallas, North Carolina, 12 January 1894. She married Montford Bacon Wales, a cotton receiver, classer and arbitrator, of Gaston County, North Carolina. They were married 6 May 1925. They had a daughter SARAH BACON9 born in Gaston County, 8 August 1928. She married Leo H. Bryant Jr., of Winston Salem, North Carolina, 3 February 1951. They had a son MONTFORD WALES10. RICHARD WINCHESTER RANKIN8, son of Sarah Ida Pegram and John Onslow Rankin, was born at McAdenville, North Carolina 12 October 1895. He married Helen Pont, 10 November 1927, in Washington, D.C. HENRY McADEN RANKIN8, son of Sarah Ida Pegram and John Onslow Rankin, was born in McAdenville, North Carolina on 6 October 1897, (91, 127). EDWARD ALBURTUS PEGRAM7 son of Edward Larkin Pegram and Juletta McGee Rhyne, was born 15 January 1864, and died 21 March 1865. ERNEST LUCIUS PEGRAM7, son of Edward Larkin Pegram and Juletta Rhyne, was born 10 December 1867, and died 29 May 1938. He was buried at Stanley, North Carolina. Ernest Lucius married Sallie Jane Finger, born 14 June 1870, and died 14 August 1901. They had four children: PERCY8, ERNEST MILLER, CALVIN WINCHESTER and OLIVE. PERCY F. PEGRAM8 married Madge Harrill, and they had HUGH9, WILLIAM, deceased, and DAVID. Percy is buried at Shelby, North Carolina. ERNEST MILLER PEGRAM8, the son of Ernest Lucius Pegram and Sallie Jane Finger, was stated by one source to have married Erma Gurley (19). His sister, Mrs. Olive Pegram Gillis, listed his wife as Elmo Harris. Ernest may have been married twice. He died 23 November 1953. CALVIN W. PEGRAM8, son of Ernest Lucius Pegram and Sallie Jane Finger, was born 6 April 1897. He married Addie Lee Bradshaw, born 10 April 1900. They had issue:
OLIVE PEGRAM8, the daughter of Ernest Lucius Pegram and Sallie Jane Finger, was born 18 February 1900. She married Benjamin Franklin Gillis, 4 February 1922, and lives in Tallahassee, Florida, 1984. Mr. Gillis was born 29 August 1899 and died 30 March 1957. Olive and Mr. Gillis had five children: 175
After the fourth child Sallie Jane Finger died. Lucius later married Etta Blanche Little, daughter of Rev. M. L. Little, founder of Gaston College (128). Lucius and Blanche had six known children:
JESSIE VIOLA PEGRAM7, daughter of Edward Larkin Pegram and Juletta Rhyne, was born 18 October 1870, and died 7 October 1873. LELIA EDNA PEGRAM7, daughter of Edward Larkin Pegram and Juletta Rhyne, was born 2 June 1875. She was married 31 October 1896 to the Rev. Jonas Barclay, born 28 January 1865. JOHN RUSSELL JR., b. 2 Aug. 1951. VIOLET SUSAN PEGRAM6, daughter of Winchester Pegram and Mary Stowe, was born 22 January 1830, and died 22 February 1881, at her home in Dallas, North Carolina. Violet married Washington Freno Holland, born 2 April 1817, in Gaston County, and died there 18 176 November 1851. He was buried at Olney. Mr. Holland was the son of Issac Holland and Mary Rankin, both buried at Olney. A brief resume of the Holland family was written by Willis F. Holland, grandson of Washington and Violet, and is deposited in the Gaston County Library. Violet and Mr. Holland had only one child: WASHINGTON FRENO HOLLAND JR.7 WASHINGTON FRENO HOLLAND JR.7 was born 26 November 1851, in Dallas, North
Carolina. His first marriage was to Ella Hunter, and they had issue: Washington Freno Holland, Jr was married a second time to Maggie Rhyne, daughter of Moses H. Rhyne and Margaret Hoffman, and they had:
After the death of Washington Freno Holland Sr., husband of Violet Pegram6, she married Jacob Froneberger, born 3 November 1836. Mr. Froneberger was a merchant of Dallas, North Carolina. Mrs. Froneberger was a loyal member of the Presbyterian Church of Dallas of
which her father, Winchester was the first Ruling Elder. She was a beloved
teacher in its Sunday school for many years. She was highly esteemed by all who
knew her. She and her husband are buried in the Presbyterian Church cemetery in
Dallas. (19).

MARY ELIZABETH FRONEBERGER7 was born 11 May 1856 and died in 1940. She married
John C. Puett of Dallas, North Carolina, and they had the following children: WILLIAM WINCHESTER PEGRAM6, son of Winchester Pegram and Mary Stowe, was born 12 August 1832, and died 6 December 1888. He married Margaret E. Elliott, 14 October 1856, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was born 9 January 1833 and died 14 June 1896. They had three children:

MILES PINCKNEY PEGRAM6, son of Winchester Pegram and Mary Stowe, was born 27 November 1834 and died 16 December 1915 or 16. He married Victoria Louise Tate, daughter of Thomas Randolph Tate and Annie Laura Humphries, 1 November 1876. She was born 11 April 1853 and died 4 June 1882. Miles Pinckney was a prominent banker in Charlotte, being President of the First National Bank (103). He owned considerable property in Gaston County in the latter part of the 1800s. He is listed many times in both the Grantor and Grantee indexes to real estate conveyances. He likewise owned property in Charlotte and other areas of Mecklenburg County. One who is interested in the extent and locations of property owned by the Pegram family can find pages of listings in the indexes to real estate conveyances of Gaston, Lincoln and Mecklenburg Counties of North Carolina, and in York County, South Carolina. Miles Pinckney Pegram is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte. He and Victoria had three children:
Some 260 descendants of Winchester Pegram and Mary Stowe have been listed. Some were missed, and there are many in more recent generations that are not known. Judging from the information available, these descendants are a group of citizens that have contributed substantially to their community and country. 178 |
