LEWIS - I am looking for information on the Lewis family from Dinwiddie County. They lived in a big house off of Cox road, and that house had as its foundation a log cabin built before the Revolutionary War. It fell out of my family in the 1940s, I believe. The oldest name I have is Algernon Lewis, son of Colonel Lewis who fought in the Civil War. Algernon married his first cousin, Mary Sue Lewis, and they had several children, including William Henry Lewis, who went to Africa in 1910 as a missionary for the Seventh-Day Adventist movement. William's sister was my great grandmother, Fanny Sue Lewis, who married one of the hired hands, by the name of Bestpitch. William Bestpitch had been hired out of Charolotte, Virginia, and worked for the Allens, the other big house with which the Lewis family was affiliated The Lewises had 100 acres after the Civil War, and raised melons on part of it. Much of it was in timber, and the family ran a saw mill on both their property and elsewhere, employing about a dozen men. Algernon built the pews for a little white Adventist church constructed near the property by him and a group of others. I am trying to find out the first name of Algernon's father, Colonel Lewis, and anything else anyone knows about them. Also, I believe the Allen's house had been turned into a state historical trust, but several years ago, a twister demolished it. Its property had the worlds tallest loblolly pine on it, and the old woman who was still living in the Allen place at the time was named Hermione. I think she married an Allen, and was the high school teacher and friend of my grandmother, Virginia Walton Bestpitch, who will be 90 this Mary. Last I heard, Hermione was still alive. Anybody know more about Lewises, Allens, et cetera?
