They were known to be living in the Petersburg/Dinwiddie area by 1887 at the time of the birth of my grandmother Ella Halligan LEDFORD. She had an older brother REL LEDFORD Jr. It is believed that Ida Lucinda immigrated from Germany. REL Sr disappears in the early 1890's - family mystery that died with my grandmother. Do not know if it was desertion, divorce or death. ILVK LEDFORD became a dietician for the Seaboard Airline Railroad and ended up in Rocky Mount, North Carolina where she died in the 1930's. Does anyone have any knowledge of REL Ledford or of his family? I'm at a real dead end - pardon the expression. Somehow these families are connected to CHEATHAM and CROWDERS in Dinwiddie County, but the exact connection is unknown. The listing goes on to say that Lovinia CROWDER married Essem ELAM in Sept 1792 in Amelia County. Lovinia had a brother named Nelson CROWDER who resided in Dinwiddie. Essem ELAM was born in Powhatan County about 1764. He and Lovinia had the following children: Sarah Mason ELAM, married Absolam KING 29 June 1838. Mary ELAM, married Samuel HUNTER, 15 Jan 1810. James Madison ELAM, married Rebecca CHAMBERS. Francis ELAM, married WOOLRIDGE? Senoria ELAM, married Daniel FLIPPIN. Have done some research on James Madison ELAM, who later moved to E. Baton Rouge, LA and was elected Secretary of State but died before his inauguration. We are searching the Sara Mason ELAM/Absolam KING line of which we are descended. Does anyone in Dinwiddie County know of any of these families? They were married Jan 13, 1797 in Mecklenburg Co, VA.. Some time around 1840 Elizabeth move the family from VA to Carroll Co, TN.. It is thought that she was following other Wall family who were already in Carroll Co, TN.. Then some time after that Thomas Meredith Thweatt Wall b: Dec 12, 1812 d: Oct 2, 1890 the youngest son move back east to Warren Co, TN that would become DeKalb Co, TN.. They were married c1833 in Mass. or New Hampshire, and moved to Belmont (Fayette Co.), Tenn., where he operated an academy for boys. They had five children, all born in Belmont. James died 10 Apr., 1847 in Belmont. Who were James' parents? Did he have siblings? (There is a family tradition that he was an only child.) I have extensive info on descendants, glad to share.
