If you’re researching your family roots here in Dinwiddie County, you’re in the right place—and we’re glad you stopped by.
This site is part of the USGenWeb Project, a volunteer effort that’s been around since 1996. Our goal is simple: make local genealogy resources available to everyone, for free. No subscriptions, no paywalls—just open access to records and history. What makes this site different from the big national genealogy sites? A lot of what you’ll find here—old tombstone photos, courthouse records, family group sheets, even personal stories—was shared by local volunteers. Some of it never shows up on the big sites at all. It’s the kind of “local color” that adds depth to your research and connects you to real people from the past. Please note that some content has been contributed by previous volunteers. While efforts are made to ensure accuracy, users should verify information independently. Happy researching!I am Ed Olsen, Webmaster and Coordinator for this Dinwiddie County, Virginia site. I hope you enjoy your visit. Please email me if you have any suggestions or contributions you would like to make.
Dinwiddie County, located in the south-central region of Virginia, was officially established in 1752 from Prince George County. Rich in history, the county played a significant role in early American life and was the site of several pivotal battles during the Civil War. Named in honor of Robert Dinwiddie, the acting colonial governor of Virginia at the time, the county is steeped in heritage and tradition.
From its agricultural roots to its strategic military significance, Dinwiddie County offers a compelling narrative for genealogists, historians, and anyone interested in exploring the lives of those who helped shape Virginia’s past.
I hope you find my efforts helpful in your research of your Dinwiddie County roots. I am unable to do additional research on your family as I do not live locally and do not have direct access to records.
