John Henry was the youngest son of Patrick Henry. He and his brother Edward Winston Henry inherited Red Hill when Patrick died in 1799. John received the portion with the house, which originally belonged to Richard M. Booker. When he reached his majority, John and his wife Elvira enlarged the simple house. It was enlarged further in the early 20th century, and burned to the ground ca. 1919. Today, Red Hill is a National Historic Landmark, open to the public. The house and some of the outbuildings have been reconstructed. Patrick Henry, his wife, and other family members are buried there. — Kathy Liston 2003
