ABRAHAM MARTIN TO THOMAS COLLIER
This Indenture made this second day of December One thousand seven hundred and
sixty six between Abraham Martin and Betty his wife of the County of Charlotte
of the one part and Thomas Collier of the County of Hanover of the other part
Witnesseth that the said Abraham Martin & Betty Martin his Wife for and in
Consideration of One hundred and Fourty three pounds current money of Virginia
to them in hand paid by the said Thomas Collier the Receipt whereof the said
Abraham Martin and Betty Martin his wife do hereby these Presents acknowledge
they the said Abraham Martin and Betty his wife have granted bargauned and sold
alined? & confirmed and by these presents do grant Bargain and sell and Confirm
unto the said Thomas Collier his Heirs and Assigns forever one certain tract or
parcel of land lying and being in the County of Charlotte on both sides of the
main branch of Horsepen Creek and Bound [?] followeth to wit Beginning at a
shugar tree on the west side of the said creek, thence a new line north eighty
degrees west two hundred and twelve poles to pointers in the patent line thence
along the patent lines south thirteen degrees west two hundred and fifty poles
to a white oak thence along Mays lines south sixty five degrees east fourty four
poles to a white oak thence south fifty seven degrees east one hundred and two
poles crossing the said creek to a Turkey oak saplin, thence a new line north
[thirty?] degrees twenty poles to a turkey oak in the patent line north thirty
degrees east one hundred and fourty poles to a pine thence north fifty degrees
east one hundred and eighteen poles to Williams Mill Land thence along his line
north thirty poles to a hickory and pine thence north eighty three degrees east
sixteen poles to a beach on Williams Mill Creek thence down the said creek as it
meanders to the mouth crossing the main Horsepen Creek thence up the said creek
as it meanders to the Beginning Including three hundred and sixty seven acres of
land and lays contiguous and joining the land aforesaid and also all trees woods
and commons profits commodities advantages hereditaments ways waters &
appurtenances whatsoever to the said three hundred and sixty seven acres of land
above mentioned belonging or in any way appertaining and also the revertion and
revertions remainder & remainders rents and services of the said land and of
premises of every part & and parcel thereof & all the Estate rite title interest
claim & demand whatsoever of them the said Abraham Martin & Betty Martin his
wife of in and to the said tract or parcel of land above mentioned belonging or
in any way appertaining and also the revertion and revertions remainder and
remainders rents & services of the land & premises and of every part & parcel
thereof & all the estate rite title interest claim and demand whatsoever of them
the said Abraham Martin and Betty Martin his wife of in and to the said tract or
parcel of three hundred and sixty seven acres of land & premises of every part
thereof - To have and to hold the said land and premises above mentioned and

forever the only proper use and behoof of the said Thomas Collier his heirs and

sixty six peaceable and quiet possession was had & taken of the within named
Abraham Martin and Betty Martin his wife of the within granted land & premises
and the same was by them delivered unto the within named Thomas Collier as the
usual symballs of livery of & seizin according to the force form and effect of
the within deed.

[Thomas Collier was a son of John Collier of Hanover Co., who d. after 1760.
Thomas mar. Mary Frances Dabney, and had eight children:
1) Benjamin, mar. 1st cousin Sarah Gaines Collier in 1787; 2) Martha Frances,
mar. David Worsham Osborne, 1798; 3) Ann, mar. Francis Gaines, 1799; 4) Dabney,
mar. Patsy Pulliam, 1796; Sarah Barksdale, 1802; and Phoebe Elam, 1824. Moved to
Tenessee; 5) Frances, mar. Dennis D. Morgan, 1806; 6) Charles, d. young; 7)
John, d. in S.C., unmarried; 8) Elizabeth, mar. Joseph Billups Ingram, 1796.
Thomas Collier left a will in Charlotte Co., rec. Dec. 1787. I'm descended from
his brother, John Collier, who lived next to Thomas on Horsepen Creek, and moved
to Kentucky in 1795. Ed Dolan].

This Indenture made the fourth day of November one thousand seven hundred and
Seventy one Between Thomas Collier of the County of Charlotte of the one part
and Joseph Collier of the County aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that
the said Thomas Collier for and in consideration of the sum of Seventy one
pounds ten shillings current money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said
Joseph Collier the Receipt whereof he the said Thomas Collier doth hereby
acknowledge, he the said Thomas Collier hath granted, Bargained, Sold, aliened &
confirm and doth by these presents, grant, bargain, sell, alien & confirm unto
the said Joseph Collier his heirs, Executors, Administrators and assigns forever
one Certain Tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County of Charlotte
on the main branch of the horsepen Creek and bounded as followeth To wit,
Beginning at a Red oak sapling in the Pattent line thence along the same South
thirteen Degrees West one hundred and Eighty poles to a white oak thence along
Mays Lines South Sixty Degrees East, Fourty four poles to a white oak, Thence
South Fifty seven Degrees East one hundred and two poles Crossing the said Creek
to a Turkey oak Sapling Thence a new Line North Thirty Six degrees East Seventy
poles to a Turkey oak in the Pattent line, thence along the same North Thirty
Degrees East Eighty five poles to a Corner Red oak, Thence new Lines West forty
Eight Poles to a beach on a branch at a Spring, Thence down the said branch as
it meanders to a white oak, thence [?] North Thirty one Degrees West, Twenty
four poles to a red oak sapling, thence North fifty five degrees West one
hundred & twenty poles Crossing the said Creek to the first Station, including
one hundred and Seventy seven and a half acres of Land with all and Singular the
priveleges and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appurtaining. To
have and to hold the above sold land with all the appurtenances to him the said
Joseph Collier, his heirs Executors, Adm. and assigns forever. To have, hold,
occupy, use possess & enjoy the same with every part and parcel thereof to him
the said Joseph Collier his heirs, Executors, Administrators, and assigns
forever against him the said Thomas Collier his heirs Executors &
Administrators, and against the claim & Demand of any person or persons

[Joseph Collier was a brother of Thomas Collier; both came from Hanover Co. They
lived on Horsepen Creek with another brother, John Collier, my ancestor. Joseph
Collier mar. Amey Moseley on 15 Dec. 1772 in Charlotte Co. She was a dau. of
Edward Moseley and Amey Green. Joseph had three sisters nearby: Frances, who
married Charles Hutcheson, and eventually moved to Mecklenburg Co.; Mary, who
mar. Samuel Goode, and lived in Pr. Edward and Charlotte; and Sally, who mar.
Robert Goode (brother of Samuel) in Pr. Edward Co. on 24 Jan. 1765].

of Charlotte of the one Part and John Collier of the County of Lunenburg of the

wife for and in Consideration of Virginia to them in Hand paid by the said John

acres of Land above mentioned belonging or in any wisw appertaining, and also
the Reversion and Reversions Remainder and Remainders, Rents and services of the

[John Collier was a brother of Thomas and Joseph Collier, all of whom settled on
Horsepen Creek in Charlotte Co. They were from Hanover Co. This deed says John
Collier was "of Lunenburg Co." There are no deeds mentioning him in that county,
and if he did live there, it wasn't for long. John Collier married Hannah
Hamlett in Pr. Edward Co. on 1765; they had 11 children and emigrated to Bourbon
Co., Ky. in 1795, and their land became part of Nicholas Co., Ky. in 1800. He
left a will there in 1820].
[John Collier lived in Charlotte Co. until 1795, when he sold his land and moved
to Kentucky. He had added to his farm twice; he bought another 62 acres from
Abraham Martin in 1770, and 52 acres from William Jameson in 1779].

JOHN COLLIER TO JOHN BILLUPS
DEED BOOK 7, p. 145
This Indenture made this fifth day of October one thousand seven hundred and
ninety five between John Collier of the County of Charlotte of the one part and
John Billups of the County of Mecklenburg of the other part Witnesseth, that
the said John Collier for for and in consideration of the Just and full sum of
three hundred and fourteen pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid
by the said John Billups the receipt whereof the said John Collier doth hereby
acknowledge and himself fully satisfied, contented and paid, hath Bargained and
Sold, and by these presents doth Bargain, Sell and confirm to him the said John
Billups his Heirs and assigns forever, one certain tract or parcel of Land
containing three hundred fourteen acres lying and being in the County of
Charlotte on both sides of the great horsepen creek: and is as follows (to wit)
two hundred Acres a part thereof also sixty acres a further part thereof, was
granted by said Collier by Deeds from Abraham Martin, also fifty two Acres the
residue of said Tract was granted him by William Jameson by Deed all of which
Deeds is duly Recorded in the County Court of Charlotte and to which is refered.
With all and singular the priveleges and appurtinances thereunto belonging or in
any wise appertaining. To have and to hold the above sold Land and premises with
all its appurtenances to him the said John Billups his heirs and assigns
forever, to have hold use occupy possess and enjoy the same with every part and
parcel thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining and the said John Collier
doth covenant and agree, that the aforesaid Tract of Land with all its
appurtenances, he will he will warrant and forever defend to the said Billups
his heirs and assigns forever against the claim and demand of all and every
person and persons whatsoever. In Witness whereof the said John Collier hath
hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year above written.

POWER OF ATTORNEY - JOHN RAWLINS TO JOHN COLLIER

Know all men by these presents that I John Rawlins for divers good causes and
considerations me hereunto moveing, but more particularly on account of the
confidence & esteem I have in and for my trusty friend Major John Collier of the
County of Nicholas in the State of Kentuckey have constituted, ordained &
appointed & by these presents do constitute ordain & appoint my said friend John
Collier my true and only lawful attorney, for me, in my stead and in my name to
lay off & have surveyed to W. James Cheaney five hundred and ten acres of land,
it being that part of a survey in which I am interrested & to which I am
entitled, the said Survey being on Licking river in the County of Nicholas in
the State of Kentuckey, and further for me, in my name & in my stead, by a
proper deed of conveyance with a General Warranty to convey to the said James
Cheaney the said five hundred & ten acres of Land lying on the said Licking
river to him & to his heirs forever, & to grant proper acquittances and
discharges to the said James Cheaney for any & all sums of money by him to be
paid on account of the premises, and I the said John Rawlings do hereby give &
grant to to the said John Collier full power and authority to act & do for me in
my name and in my stead all and every thing necessary in accomplyshing the
aforesaid purposes, In Witness whereof I the said John Rawlins have hereunto set
my hand and affixed my seal this second day of February one thousand eight
hundred & one.

This Indenture made this fifteenth day of January one thousand seven hundred and
ninety eight Between Philip Bond of the County of Charlotte of the one part and
william Collier of the said County of the other part Witnesseth that the said
Philip Bond for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds
current money of Virginia, to him in hand paid by the said William Collier the
receipt whereof he the said Philip Bond doth hereby acknowledge himself fully
satisfied contented and paid, hath given granted bargained & sold and by these
presents doth grant bargain sell and deliver unto the said William Collier one
certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred and fifty acres more or
less and being in the said County of Charlotte on Sandy Creek and bounded by the
lines of Matthew Hutcherson, Miles Bottoms, Isaac Brizendine dec'd., James
Markham, & Chasteen Cock dec'd. & with all and singular the priveleges and
appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining to him the said
William Collier his heirs and assigns forever. To have, hold, use, occupy
possess and enjoy the same with every part & parcel thereof to him the said

married Elizabeth Williams in Charlotte Co. on 3 March, 1794. She was a daughter
of Thomas Williams, who left a will in Charlotte Co., recorded 6 June, 1803.
William Collier and Elizabeth migrated to Nicholas Co., Ky. to live beside his
parents and siblings].

This Indenture made the sixth day of August one thousand seven hundred and
seventy one Between John Scott of the County of Amelia Executor of the Last Will
& Testament of Robert Jones late of the said County of Amelia dec'd. of the one
part and James Hamlet of the County of Lunenburgh of the other part-- Whereas
the said Robert Jones by his Last Will & Testament aforesaid did order and
direct that his Executor aforesaid should sell & dispose of (for the payment of
his debts) one certain Tract piece, or parcel of Land in the County of Charlotte
aforesaid meaning all the Land he held & possessed in that County. Now this
Indenture Witnesseth that the said John Scott in consequence and pursuance of
the Trust reposed in him by the Will aforesaid for and in consideration of the
sum of one hundred & ninety pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid
by the said James Hamlett paid before the Ensealing? & delivery hereof the
receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge he the said John Scott hath granted
bargained sold aliened, released, enfeoffed and confirmed and by these presents
doth give, grant, bargain, sell, alien, release, enfeoff and confirm unto the
said James Hamlet his heirs and assigns forever one Certain Tract, piece or
parcel of Land scituate lying and being in the said County of Charlotte on both

And the said John Scott for himself & his heirs and for the Heirs of the said
Robert Jones to Covenant and agree with the said James Hamlet his heirs etc.
that he the said John Scott the aforesaid Tract of Land with the Premises unto
the said James Hamlet his heirs & assigns against the property Claim & Demand of
him the said John of the Hiers of the said Robt. Jones & all other persons
whatsoever shall & will by these presents warrant & forever defend. In Witness

AUSTIN HIGHLETT TO JAMES HAMLETT
DEED BOOK 4, pp. 188-89
This Indenture made this fourth day of March one thousand seven hundred and
eighty Between Austin Hughlett of the County of Charlotte of the one part, and
James Hamlet of the same County of the other part, Witnesseth that the said
Austin Hughlett for and in Consideration of the sum of Five hundred pounds,
Current money of Virginia to him in hand paid, the Receipt whereof he the said
Austin Hughlett doth hereby acknowledge, hath given granted bargained and sold,
and doth by these presents doth give grant bargain and sell, deliver & confirm
to him the said James Hamlett his heirs and assigns forever one Certain Tract
piece or parcel of Land lying and being in the County aforesaid, Containing
thirty Acres be the same more or less, and bounded as followeth. to wit,
Beginning on Col. Isaac Reads line near the Court house road thence down to
Twitties Creek thence up the Creek as it meanders to James Hamletts line, thence
on his Line to Col. Isaac Reads line formerly Thomas Jones line, from thence to
the first Station, with all and singular the priveleges and premises with all
the appurtenances thereunto belonging unto the said James Hamlett his heirs and
assigns forever. To have hold use occupy possess enjoy the same with every part
and parcel thereof to him the said James Hamlett his heirs and assigns forever,
and against Claim and Demand of all other persons whatsoever, shall and will by
these presents Warrant and forever Defend, In Witness whereof the said Austin
Hughlett hath set his hand and seal the day & year as above.

DEED BOOK 10, pp. 65-66.
This Indenture made this twenty fourth day of April in the year of our Lord
Eighteen hundred and four between Hamlett Collier & Elizabeth Collier his wife
of the one part and William Towler (all of the County of Charlotte) of the other
part. Witnesseth that the said Hamlett Collier and Elizabeth Collier his wife
for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and forty pounds current
money of Virginia to them in hand paid before the Sealing and delivery of these
presents the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained
and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell enfeoff & confirm
unto the said William Towler his heirs and assigns forever one certain piece
tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the County aforesaid Containing by
actual Survey twenty two and one half acres and bounded as followeth viz
Beginning at a new made corner on Childries line Spanish oak thence along his
line S.88 E.50 poles to a new made corner and oak on said line thence a new line
S.12 W.74 poles to a corner p[?] oak thence N.88 W.50 poles to a new made corner
pointers thence N.12 E.74 poles to the beginning -- To have and to hold the
aforesaid tract or parcel of Land together with all houses thereinto
appertaining belonging to the said William Towler his heirs and assigns forever
- To him and their only proper use and behoof free and clear from all or any
title, claim, dower challenge or demand of the said Hamlett Collier and
Elizabeth Collier his wife theirs executors or administrators and of all & every
other person or persons whatsoever claiming by from or under them and the said
Hamlett Collier and Elizabeth Collier his wife for themselves their heirs Exors.
& admin. do Covenant promise & agree to & with the said William Towler that they
shall & will at any time hereafter when required by the said William Towler his
heirs executors administrators make such further or other conveyances as the
said William Towler his heirs executors admrs. shall at any time hereafter
require and lastly the said Hamlett Collier and Elizabeth Collier his wife for
themselves their heirs exors. admrs. do hereby Covenant forever to Warrant and
defend the aforesaid Tract or parcel of land & premises with all the
appurtenances to the said William Towler his heirs executors administrators
against them their heirs executors & administrators and against all and every
other person or persons whatsoever -- In Witness whereof we have hereunto set
our hand and affixed our Seal the day and year above written.

[Hamlett Collier is my ancestor, son of John Collier/Hannah Hamlett, who lived
in Charlotte Co. from 1767 to ca. 1795, and emigrated to Nicholas Co., Ky.
Hamlett and Elizabeth also moved to Nicholas Co., Ky. Elizabeth was a daughter
of Japheth Towler/Elizabeth Bradley, of Charlotte Co. The grantee of the deed
above, William Towler, was a brother of Elizabeth. William married Hannah Alice
Watson on 14 Feb., 1813 in Lunenburg Co. He later moved to Mecklenburg Co. The
Edward Towler who witnessed the deed was a brother to William and Elizabeth. He
married Ann Friend, dau. of Joseph Friend and Elizabeth Bass]. Sent by Ed Dolan.

This Indenture made this eighteenth day of January in the year of our Lord
Christ eighteen hundred and six between Luke Towler of the one part and Edward
Towler of the other part both of the County of Charlotte, witnesseth that for
and in consideration of the sum of ninety six pounds current money of Virginia
to him in hand paid before the signing and delivery of these presents the
receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge hath granted and by these presents
doth grant bargain and sell, one certain tract or parcel or tract of land lying
and being in the County of Charlotte, and on the branches of Twitties Creek
containing by estimation one hundred and thirty six acres, (and bounded as
followeth) beginning at a corner poplar in Austin Almonds line thence along his
line to a Corner Oak in Cox's line thence along that line to a Corner Pine
thence along the said line to a corner pine in said line thence along Pettus's
line to a corner [?] oak in Oratio Pettus's line thence along Mrs. Towlers line
to a corner pine in said line thence along said line to a Corner red oak in said
line thence along said line to Nowells line that being a straight line to the
beginning to have and to hold the aforesaid tract or parcel of Land together
with the appurtenances thereto belonging to the said Edward Towler his heirs and
assigns forever and he the said Luke Towler doth hereby relinquish for himself
and his heirs all right and title to the only use and behoof of him the said
Ewd. Towler, confirming and defending the same against the claim of any other
person whatsoever in witness whereof I the said Luke Towler have hereunto set my
hand and my seal the day and year above mentioned in presence of us

[Luke Towler was a son of Japheth Towler of Charlotte Co., as was William
Towler, one of the witnesses. Luke Towler married Martha Collier on 30 Sept.,
1804, in Charlotte Co. Martha was a sister to Coleman A. Collier, one of the
witnesses. Luke and Martha moved to Nicholas Co., Ky. and lived there until ca.
1820, when they moved again, to Henderson Co., Ky.].
