Charlotte County Virginia was named, like Mecklenburg County, for Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, consort of George III. Charlotte County was founded in 1765, as provided by an act of the General Assembly. The ancestry of Charlotte can be traced down from Charles City County, Prince George County, Brunswick County and Lunenburg County. Early Charlotte County names are found in the Vestry Book of Cumberland Parish until the formation of Cornwall Parish in 1757.
