Charles City County's Current Neighbors:

Present-day Charles City County is bordered by the James River to the south, and theChickahominy River to the north and east, forming the border between Charles City County and New Kent County, and between Charles City County and James City County. Chickahominy River empties into the James River at the southeastern corner of Charles City County. Roughly 40 miles downstream, the James River flows into the Chesapeake Bay near its outlet into the Atlantic Ocean.

Charles City County's neighbors from about 1613 to 1650 were three of the other original shires of Virginia: Charles River (later York), Henrico, and James City. New Kent was formed from York in 1653, making it a neighbor of Charles City. During this same time period, Surry was formed out of James City, and it bordered on the southeast.

In 1703, Prince George County was created from the portion of Charles City County that was south of the James River, making that a new neighbor, and leaving the river as the only border with Surry. In 1732 Brunswick was created out of the southwestern portion of Prince George County, which was land that once belonged to Charles City. These two newer counties and their offspring continued to give up land to other newly-created counties in future years, including Amelia, Lunenburg, Dinwiddie, Halifax, Prince Edward, Bedford, Charlotte, Mecklenburg, Pittsylvania, Henry, Greensville, Campbell, Franklin, Nottoway, Patrick, and Appomattox.

In 1749, Chesterfield was created out of Henrico, and its eastern point touches Charles City County. Hanover County doesn't come as close since its creation out of New Kent County, but it is still nearby.
