Errors/Corrections to the Carroll Co "Index"

Thomas Abner Bailiff

Jennifer Bailiff <jbailiff@ix.netcom.com> writes, that the folks who transcribed the 1860 Carroll Co census (that includes myself and Camilla Dean Browder) were mistaken when they read the name of Abram Bailiff, age 22, in household 866/872. She relates that

``I have, once again, checked the 1860 Carroll County, Virginia census. My gggrandfather is very clearly listed as "Abner," not "Abram," in the household of his parents, Daniel and Mary Bailiff.
``He was known as Abner throughout his life (never went by "Thomas")
``His death certificate records his full name as "Thomas Abner Bailiff," the son of Daniel Bailiff and Mary Norwood. He died January 27, 1915 in Elizabethton, Carter County, Tennessee at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 16 days, and was buried in Banner Elk, Avery County, North Carolina, where he had lived for many years.''
