Moses Helm was born circa 1710, possibly in England but
no proof has been found for this. The first written record for Moses comes from
Belfast, Northern Ireland, where on July 24, 1738, Moses Helm along with Thomas
Helm were witnesses on a Power of Attorney for Ann Drennan. Around 1738 Moses
Helm married Sarah Jameson and their first child, Elizabeth Helm, was born
November 15, 1739 in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The other children of Moses
and Sarah were: second, John Helm, born August 14, 1741 and died April 20, 1826
- John married Mary McAlister circa 1776; third, Mary Ann Helm, born October 23,
1743 and died February 18, 1837 - Mary Ann married James Carson circa 1765;
fourth, William Helm, born September 11, 1745 and died circa - 1765; fifth,
Thomas Carson Helm, born July 22, 1748 and died March 15, 1781. - Thomas Carson
married Nancy Ann Gilbert on January 31, 1774; sixth, Susannah Nancy Helm, born
June 17, 1750 and died 1836 - Nancy married James Dixon August 11, 1772,
seventh, Jane Rebecca Helm, born May 25, 1752 and died April 1825 - Jane Rebecca
never married; eighth, Sarah Jameson Helm, born October 8, 1755 and died January
11, 1843 - Sarah Jameson married James Dinwiddie on May 15, 1776. On January 24,
1740 the above Power of Attorney was recorded in Cecil County Maryland. (Land
Book 4, page 402) At the time this was recorded Thomas Helm was in Maryland. May
16, 1740 Moses Helm bought land in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey from
Methias Smock and his wife Mary. (the original deed for this land is in the
Manuscript Section of the Kentucky Building Library, Western Kentucky
University, Bowling Green, Kentucky.) On September 28, 1754 Moses Helm has an
unclaimed letter at the Post-Office at Trenton, New Jersey. On September 24,
1757 there is a deed in Bedford County, Virginia where Moses Helm bought 154
acres of land on the Headwaters of Reedy Creek from Thomas Leerwood and his wife
Elizabeth. When Campbell County, Virginia was formed in 1782 this changed the
land of Moses Helm from Bedford County to Campbell County. No graves have been
located in Bedford, Campbell or Appamattox Counties for Moses Helm, his wife or
any of his children, but some are thought to be buried in the First Concord
Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Appamattox County. In this cemetery there is
buried a Mary Helm who died November 16, 1811 at age 23. Mary was Mary Chapman,
the first wife of James Helm. James Helm was the son of John Helm and the
grandson of Moses Helm. According to a family letter, that was located but never
verified, Moses Helm left home between 1772 and 1800 and went North and was
never seen again. Jane Rebecca Helm took care of her mother until she died. The
will of Jane Rebecca Helm is recorded at Rustburg, Campbell County, Virginia,
Clerks Office, Will Book 5, Page 165. |
