An Iroquois County, Illinois, newspaper, dated 20 September 1901 says, "Albert HEMP and John and Jim COOK of Ashkum, and the wives of the latter two left Wednesday morning for a trip to their old home in Virginia. They have not been back for several years and will stay for several weeks." Samuel HEMP, born 14 January 1861 at Staunton, Augusta County to Jacob HEMP, married 15 January 1891 to Catherine COOK, born 18 October 1867 Scranton, Virginia to John COOK. I cannot locate Scranton in Virginia and think this may actually be Staunton. Other Augusta County pioneers who came to Iroquois County, Illinois were Joseph HEMP who married Margaret CULLEN; had daughter Cornelia C. HEMP born 1857. Also A. B. HEMP and Lulu HEMP. Also Benjamin F. COOK born Augusta County 6 March 1822 who married Louisa IFLETER and had son James W. COOK born 1866 Augusta County. Searching for any data in connection with these names. Will share data. Thank you, Norma Meier, Box 626, Clifton IL 60927 Grambo@dlogue.net

My ancestor Jacob GOODLING was born somewhere in VA in 1795. I believe his father was PA German but may have married a Scotch-Irish woman and family tradition claims much Scotch-Irish blood. Jacob returned to Mifflin County PA by 1814 and his father was dead by then, but I have nothing else. Strongly suspect family was in either Augusta or Frederick counties. Would love to share info. Thanks.
