BARKER, HOPKINS, STEWART, STUART posted by Leah W. Talbot on Tuesday, September 1, 1998

I want to find information on William BARKER'S parents. He was in VA, then went on to KY, IN, and TX. His siblings included John, Elias, Jesse, and Mary, plus half-siblings James and Polly STEWART. In Augusta Co., VA an "Isabel Barker, late wife of James Stuart..." with others purchased land on Mongahela River in "Tyger's Valley" in 1792. The deed was recorded in Randolph. Any ideas as to whether this Isabel Barker STUART might be the mother/stepmother of the children listed above? William BARKER married Abiah HOPKINS.

After serving in the war, he married Isabella MERRITT on August 3, 1826 in Augusta Co. Isabella was born September 13, 1808. I am searching for her parents. John and Isabella had several children: Benjamin, Robert Whiting, Martha, Mary Margaret, Augustus, John, George, James, and I believe I'm missing a couple but..............John and Isabella both died in Grafton, Taylor Co., West Virginia. John died July 31, 1882, and Isabella died July 21, 1893. They are buried at the Smith Cemetery in Pruntytown, Taylor Co., WV. They both collected from John's War of 1812 pension. When John applied for his, a VALENTINE MERRITT signed as a witness, that he had known John for who he is for several years, and they he was who he said he was, and he watched him make his mark, and that it was him doing so. Could this Valentine possibly be Isabella's brother? Any information on the Merritt family of Augusta Co., would be greatly appreciated. MCCLANAHAN, MCCLENACHAN, MCCLENAHAN posted by Joe McClenahan on Thursday, September 10, 1998

Robert MCCLENACHAN acquired 391 acres in the Beverley patent in the 1740s. From the looks of the map, Lewis Creek ran thru the northern portion of the acreage. I have found a small reference to the fact that my ancestor retired to his farm about one mile south of Staunton. Also makes reference to a Greenville Rd. Robert's grandson sold the property in 1808 to a McDowell. The last named reference to the property was a Mrs. Gay in the late 1880s. In trying to locate this on the maps, I only find Greenville Ave. First question is, are Greenville Ave and Greenville Rd the same? Second question is can someone point to a source that could possibly identify the location for me? I am visiting the area 21- 25 Sept and would like to find the homestead site if possible. Many thanks in advance.

STRICKLAND, STRICKLIN posted by Robert C. Stricklin on Saturday, September 26, 1998

Somewhere I saw that a Levi STRICKLIN (or other spelling such as Levy STRICKLAND) was married in Augusta Co VA ca. 1805. Can anyone with access to marriage data tell me any more detailed information - name of bride, bondsman, witnesses, date anything that might help identify the parties. I recently obtained data from a rejected Indian tribal affiliation application form from the mid-1920's linking a Levi Strickland/lin of this time period to my GGF's 1850 childhood household in Decatur Co TN - which household already seemed to have a fair likelihood of being linked to other piedmont Stricklins of the period. The answer to this query is a key puzzle piece. Many thanks. Robert C. Stricklin, Route 2 Box 539, Warrenton OR 97146-9802, 503 861-3277, rstrickl@orednet.org

BOWYER, BOWYERS, BOYER, BOYERS posted by Gary D Boyer on Saturday, September 26, 1998

Any further information on Joseph BOYER, BOWYER, etal. I have found his surname spelled many ways. Born in Virginia, May 4, 1794, and was a veteran of the War of 1812, serving under Welsh's Virginia Militia. He and Elizabeth Ewin were married in Augusta Cnty, Va, on July 30, 1818, by the Reverand William King who was pastor at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton, Va.Clear evidence of time of leaving Virginia for the west, as well as yet another spelling (Bowyer), is found on page 30 of a Staunton County court document: "Hogsett vs Michael et al: On 29 April 1838 George Michael went with John Michael Sr. to the house of Joseph Bowyer. Only Bowyer was at home as the rest of the family had started for the west. He left the evening of the same day. I heard they went first to Ohio thence to Illinois." This information is entirely consistent with the census records for location of births of their children. The spelling "Bowyers" is also found on numerous documents, including Joseph Bowyers (1818), Samuel C Bowyers(1824), Solomon Boyers(1825). Also found were Samuel P Bowyer (1768), Jacob and Henry Bowyer (1769), Adam Bowyer (1770), and Margaret A Bowyer (1804). These names may be useful in supporting other lineage evidence. From "Virginia, IT's People & Customs, p,149", "At the Augusta County Court, in 1762, several persons swore that they saw John Boyers, Gentleman, 'gaming an unlawful game called hazard, or seven and eleven, at the house of Francis Tyler, ordinary keeper in Staunton'.
