After an illness of but a few short days, Geo. PETTEGREW died at Reno last Saturday from an attack of pneumonia. A few days before his death his relatives were summoned to his bedside and when the end came, he was surrounded by all that was near and dear to him.
Deceased was born in Carson Valley 47 years ago, his parents being those first to settle in this valley. His young days were spent here and when he reached man's estate he followed the vocation of a prospector. His field of labour was mostly confined to this section but he made a trip through Death Valley to Ransburg during the mining excitement at the latter place. Later he returned to this Valley and entered the well boring business and was very successful in this line of work. He moved to Reno a few years ago where he followed the same work. He discovered the mineral water known as "Diamond Pure" and which has a large sale throughout Nevada.
In August 1905, he was married to Mrs. COTTINGTON of Reno and their union was a most happy one. He was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him and was generous to a fault. He was a member of the Eagles, the well known fraternity as well as the Odd Fellows.
The remains were brought to Gardnerville last Tuesday and the funeral services were held from the Methodist Church and were largely attended. After the impressive services by Rev. EMIGH, the Chaplain of the Eagle Lodge read the burial services. Six members of the same lodge acted as pall bearers. The remains were interred in the Garden Cemetery.
To mourn his loss, the deceased leaves a loving wife, mother, two sisters and two brothers: Miss Ida PETTEGREW, Mrs. Manta DANGBERG, Jud and Andrew PETTEGREW. The two sisters and mother reside in Gardnerville.
BELOVED PIONEER LADY CALLED TO ETERNAL REST
Crossed the Plains by Ox Team in 1856 and Was One of the First White Women to Settle in Carson Valley
On Monday shortly before the noon hour, Mrs. S. A. PETTEGREW entered her last sleep. She died without pain - without any formal farewell - and was found by her daughter a few moments later on the lounge where she has reposed for her accustomed nap.
Her daughter, miss Ida, who had been her inseparable companion, entered the house and the noon hour and found the noonday meal already prepared by her mother. Stepping into the room where her mother slumbered, she spoke to her. The mother heard not because her slumber was that of when there is no awakening. She died while asleep, with an indelible smile wreathed upon her face. She had not been ill and her death was wholly unexpected.
Deceased was an every day Christian. The beatifying influences of a pure religion were spread over a life and character as spotless and charming as was ever possessed by any of the noble women who have lived and died during the ages that have gone. As such as life was a blessing and benefaction to all within its sphere of influence so is the death of such a one a misfortune, as well as an irreparable loss to the home circle made desolate by her departure. It is difficult to pay a fitting tribute to the memory of so noble a woman - one whose every day life was embellished by the most loveable attributes of her sex. A perfect lady at all times - under all circumstances, she seemed born to inspire the love and respect of all who were so fortunate as to be acquainted with her.
Mrs. S. A. PETTEGREW was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania and at the time of her death was 82 years, 8 months and 8 days of age. She moved to Ohio and later crossed the plains to Salt Lake. After a short stay there she and her husband joined an emigrant train headed for Nevada and in 1856 landed on the west side of the Valley. They soon took up pursuits of farming on the East Fork near the Berning Ranch. Later they squatted on what is still known as the PETTEGREW Ranch and now owned by D. WINKELMAN. We believe that Mrs. PETTEGREW was the last pioneer lady of those days.
In the presence of her death, how cold and impotent are words and how doubly deep would be the grief over the grave did not the rainbow of Christian hope span the dark gulf between time and eternity and such pure, bright lives inspire the belief that there is a better world beyond.
To mourn her loss, she leaves two daughters, Miss Ida PETTEGREW and Mrs. H. C. DANGBERG of this place; two sons, Andrew PETTEGREW of Reno, Jud PETTEGREW of San Diego, besides other relatives.
The funeral was held from the Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon, the interment taking place in the Garden Cemetery.
NOTE: Many members of the PETTEGREW family are buried in the Garden Cemetery in Gardnerville, Nevada. The spelling on all of the tombstones is PETTEGREW. Selina Ann's husband, James, who was thought to be buried there (there is a headstone for James – no dates) but that is now in question. Recently, I was contacted by one of Selina’s ancestor’s who has a book written in 1901 by Selina’s brother, Del, which indicates James died in Los Angeles, California in Feb. 1897. The James in the cemetery may be James Jr. who died in the 1860’s – the cemetery records have long since disappeared so we will be trying to uncover the “mystery” the old fashioned way – newspapers and death records – once the mystery is solved, I’ll update the Pettegrew information. Meanwhile, the following records are the birth and death dates for James Sr. and the children of Selina and James Phineas PETTEGREW, many of whom are buried in Douglas County. This information was supplied by Jessie WILLIAMS REEVES, great great grandniece of Selina Ann WILLIAMS – death dates prior to 1902 were taken from the book by Del WILLIAMS, after 1901, are dates that Jessie found in obits and death records: James Phineas PETTEGREW: Born: May 15, 1825 in Dearborn Co.
