Indian Troubles RED CLOUD the aged chief of the Ogalla Sioux or (MacPeablenta) as he is called in the Indian Tongue is now the foremost chief of the Sioux nation. His efforts have always been in the interests of peace and on several occasions he has proved himself to be a true friend of the White man. The following speech delivered a few days ago upon the subject of the present troubles, are the words of a statesman who recognizes that peace in the only chance for his race and referring to the treaty of 1868 he said, "I have been trying to do what is right, and I have worked hard for the interests of my people. So have others. There is a great deal of jealous among us as you well know. I have enemies as everyone has. But let us lay all that aside. We are together here now, all but those Brules in the Bad Land. I am sorry for those people, but they have no ears. I have done all I could to get them to come in. I am old and my eyes bother me a great deal. I sent my son with Father JULE to try to get them to come, and they succeeded in inducing Two Strike and his people to come, and they are here now. Yet I have been accused of wanting them to stay away, which any one who knows me know to be untrue. They do not belong to my **** ***** of course they are of ****** **** ******* should have liked ****** ***** ****** listen to the Gr********** *******. Are doing wrong and ******** the ones that suffer for it. There never has been any fighting on this agency, and I have always hoped there would never be. But these people will not listen to their friends. They drove ROCKY BEAR and his party out of their camp. They have no ears, and we must let the government go out and get them. I would like to see the government bring in the women and children and take care of them, and then teach the men to listen to the words of the Great Father. They should be taught something. SITTING BULL has been killed. He was nothing to us but an Indian who had no ears, and there are lots like him in the Bad Lands now, and I think it best not to mix with them but use every means to prevent our young men from visiting their camp and them from visiting ours if they continue to disregard the wishes of those desiring peace. -------- Copyright © 2006 Heather W.
