HISTORY
Nuckolls county was created in 1860 though it
was not organized until June of 1871. It was formed from Clay
county and Nelson is its present county seat.
The history of the county as part of the state of Nebraska begins
with the Great Trail era. The Overland Route from Saint Joseph,
Missouri to California entered Nebraska in Jefferson county and
passed through Nuckolls County along the course of the Little
Blue River. Though settlement began as early as 1858, this
area was at that time on the cutting edge of the frontier. The
threat from the First Americans was great and reached a peak
with the Great Raid in August 1864.
By 1866 all Whites had been driven from the county, but by 1870
settlers were returning in numbers. In June of the next year the
orgainization and first election took place.
Elkton was the first county seat. In the election of 1873 the
county seat was centralized in Nelson. Superior, located in
the southern part of the county is the largest town and was
surveyed in 1875.
Saint Stephens, located in the northwestern portion of the county,
was the first church established in the county.

USGenWeb Project
In March and April, 1996, a group of
genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive
Genealogy Database Project. The idea was to provide a single
entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases
would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and
cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more
than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to
coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the
contents of the web page.
In June, as the Kentucky project was nearing completion, it
was decided to start a page for each of the remaining states, and
as with the Kentucky project, volunteers were found to host the
state pages. If the state in which you are interested does not have
a page and you wish to be responsible for it, of if you would like to
contribute your data or create a county page within a given state,
contact the person responsible for maintaining that state and/or
county.
Interested in knowing more about the project? Read page
requirements, download sample pages and gif files to help get you
started, find free web space to put your pages, lots of links for
graphics and backgrounds you can use, html editors you can
download, subscribe to state mailing lists and lots of other help. -

The original Nuckolls county site was a modification of the
Nemaha county site designed by John McCoy, October 1996.
Besides John, I am also indebted to Laurie Saikin and
Connie Snyder for their most valuable assistance 1997.
Thanks are acknowledged to Dale 'Doc' Schneider for originally hosting these pages
on his dsenter server. Thanks now goes to USGENNET INC for hosting these
pages.
