We often think that hypertension and high blood pressure is something new, peculiar to these times but the only difference is that now the treatment costs more. Then they also dispensed asafetida as a preventative for all children's diseases. The application was in the form of a small bag of asafetida on a string worn around the neck. Fumes inhaled from it by the child would kill all germs. How we used to hate it, especially when our school desk stood near the pot-bellied stove.
