Keya Paha Co., Nebraska Places


Keya Paha County, Nebraska was created 4 November 1884 by legislative act. Keya Paha County was previously part of Brown and Holt Counties. It was named for the Keya Paha River in the northeastern part of the county. The Keya Paha River derived it's name from the Dakota Indian title Turtle Hill River (ke'- ya for turtle, pa-ha' for hill, and wa-kpi' for river). Adrian - Adrian was a Post Office that was established 25 September 1884 and was discontinued 2 November 1886. This place was probably named for a local settler.

Brewer -Brewer was a Post Office that was established 15 Feb 1881 by Elsie Kuhn in honor of her fther Mr. Brewer. It was discontinued in 29 April 1887.

Brockman -Brockman Post Office name changed from Brockman 22 November 1899 and was discontinued 1957. Peak population in 1910 was 60. Brockman Post Office name changed from McClean in 1884. The Post Office name was then changed to Brocksburg on 22 November 1899. Town was named in honor of early settler Henry Brockman.

Brocksburg -Brocksburg was a post office that was first named McClean, than changed to Brockman and then changed again to Brocksburg.

Burton -Burton Post Office established 5 June 1884 and discontinued 1973. Town was named in honor of general merchant George W. Burton. The town of Burton vied with the town of Springview to become the county seat 24 March 1885 but lost the bitter election. Burton's peak population in 1940 was 104.

Carns-Carns Post Office name was changed from Elm Grove on 15 December 1879 and discontinued in 1943. Probably named in honor of Lieutenant Governor Edmund Crawford Carns.

Carrie-Carrie Post Office established 4 June 1884 and discontinued 5 August 1884. Carrie was probably named for Carrie Muncil the second postmaster.

Cedarville-Cedarville Post Office was established 6 April 1891 and discontinued 5 March 1896.

Darnall-Darnall Post Office was established 22 August 1884 and discontinued 24 October 1891. The Town and Post Office was named in honor of Daniel Darnall who was the first postmaster and had the Post Office in his home. Darnell reached a peak population of 10 in 1890.

EldersElders Post Office was established 22 August 1884 and discontinued 10 March 1886.

Elm GroveElm Grove Post Office came about because the name "Carns Post Office" was already used elsewhere.

Enterprise-Enterprise Post Office was established 10 July 1884 and discontinued 30 September 1928. The town was by the settlers for their own energetic ways.

Gouldale-Gouldale has been listed as a location but Postal records do not show a Post Office was ever established.

Ira-Ira Post Office was established 8 February 1904 and was rescinded 13 June 1904.

Jamison-Jamison Post Office established 9 June 1903 and discontinued 1973. Jamison town was named in honor of town founder S. P. Jamison who was one-time sheriff of Boyd County. Jamison's peak population in 1950 was 200.

Lattin-Lattin Post Office was established 8 May 1884 and discontinued 14 December 1892 and was named in honor of the first postmaster William H. Lattin.

Lomo-Lomo Post Office was established 8 May 1882 and discontinued 18 May 1895. Lomo's peak population was 38 in 1890.

Lutes-Lutes Post Office was established 17 June 1884 and discontinued 13 January 1906. The town was named in honor of John Lutes the first postmaster. Lutes reached peak population of 40 in 1890.

Marlbank-Marlbank Post Office was established 5 Feb 1885 and was discontinued 13 January 1906. Marlbank was named by Ellen G. Phelps but for what person or place is unknown.

McClean-McClean was established 10 Oct. 1881 in honor of Frank McLein. It was misspelled and thus became known as McClean. Later Changed to Brockman and then Brocksburg.

McGuire-Established in 04 Nov. 1884 and then discontinued.... Was later determined to be a locality but not a Post Office.

Meadville-Meadville Post Office was established 29 October 1883 and discontinued in 1960. Town was named in honor of Merit I. Mead, first postmaster. Meadville reached peak population of 29 in 1950.

Mills-Mills Post Office was established 1 September 1885. The town of Mills was named for a grist mill that operated in the area. Peak population reached 58 in 1900.

Munt-Munt was named after James Mund, 1st postmaster. It was established first in Holt County, 09 Oct. 1882 and then moved to Brown County. It was then moved to Keya Paha county when the counties were redivided. It was discontinued 21 Mar 1896.

Nesbit-Nesbit was named after Robert W. Nesbit, the 1st postmaster. Is was established 20 Aug 1885 and discontinued 08 April 1887.

Norden-Norden Post Office was established 5 August 1884. Norden was named by Mr. Bastedo, the first settler, for his German home near the North Sea. Norden reached peak population in 1930 and 1940 of 176.

Pekin-Pekin was named after Pekin, Illinois. It was established 01 Feb. 1886. Discontinued 31 July 1901.

Penbrook-Penbrook was taken from Cherry county when the boundry lines were redrawn. It was established 30 Oct. 1892 and discontinued 13 Feb 1898.

Pinecamp-Pinecamp received its name from the Pine timber and lumbermans camp in the vicinity. It was established 10 mar 1885 and discontinued 29 Sep 1934.

Rimrock-Rimrock Post Office was established 20 February 1886 and discontinued 11 March 1886. Rimrock was named for the nearby rock formations.

Riverview-Riverview Post Office established 13 June 1912 and discontinued 1956. Town was named for its view of the Niobrara River.

Sanford-Sanford Post Office was established 5 February 1885 and discontinued 10 June 1891. Sanford was named in honor of the first postmaster Dan Sanford.

Simpson-Simpson Post Office was established 8 May 1882 and discontinued 30 June 1925. The town was was named in honor of the first postmaster, Henry J. Simpson who homesteaded there in 1880.

Springview-Springview Post Office was established 21 July 1885. Springview is the county seat of Keya Paha County and was named for a spring nearby. Reached it's peak population of 347 in 1940. The current postmistress in 2011 is Karen Philben

Stephenson-Stephenson Post Office was established 17 October 1884 and discontinued 31 March 1890. The town was named in honor of first postmaster, William J. Stephenson.

Tiffany-Tiffany was sometimes listed as a post office but according to the US Post Office Directory it never was. The Tiffany site later became the Enterprise Post Office. Tiffany was named in honor of J N. Tiffany from Pennsylvania.
