Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Hughes, 91, Ogallala’s oldest woman, died at her home on east Second Street Sunday night. She had been in failing health for more than a year. Funeral services were held from the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. S. L. McCaig officiating.

Music was provided by Mrs. Oran Parker, Mrs. S. L. McCaig, with Mrs. H. H. Carter at the piano.

The casket was carried by John Fernstrom, Oscar Fenstrom, Jack Armstrong, Claude Armstrong, Fred Armstrong and Perry Thies, sons of pioneer families, who had been friends of the Hughes family for years.

Mrs. Hughes was the mother of five children, two of whom survive, Andrew, who had been with his mother for several weeks, Joseph, who resides in California, and a granddaughter whom she raised, Mrs. Eva Walraven of Sterling, Colo. Mrs. Walraven had been here caring for her grandmother for sometime.

Mrs. Hughes came here, the little cow town at the end of the old Texas train, in 1873, from Iowa. Some years ago she told The News that, at that time antelope still roamed the prairies of Keith County. On one occasion she said she saw a large herd of buffalo. Her husband, the late Joe Hughes, served as sheriff, deputy sheriff and village marshal.

Attending the services from a distance were Mr. And Mrs. John Walraven and family of Sterling, who returned home that evening.

Hannah Hughes, wife of A. J. Hughes of this place, died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Hughes at 2 o’clock p.m., Feb. 6, 1905, aged 20 years 11months and 1 days. She had been ill for twelve days, but it was not thought to be serious until about eighteen hours before her death and she was then past medical aid. She was laid to rest in the Ogallala cemetery Wednesday afternoon, the funeral being conducted from the Methodist church. The deceased leaves a husband and three small children, the oldest being not quite 4 years old, and the youngest only 12 days old. Also a father, mother, four sisters and three brothers and a host of friends and other relatives to morn her loss.

The deceased came with her parents from Hamilton county, Neb., to Keith county in 1885, locating near Paxton. They moved to Sutherland in the spring of 1902, where they have since lived. Hanna Gummera and A. J. Hughes were married Aug. 21, 1900, at Ogallala, where they lived until the summer of 1901, when they moved to Sutherland, where they resided until about a month prior to her death. They were on their way to Scotts Bluffs, where Mr. Hughes has a homestead, when she was taken ill and died here.

The family has the sympathy of the entire community in this their sad bereavement. The saddest of all earthly sorrows is the loss of a mother. The saddest moment of the writer’s life was when he received a telegram with the cold, cruel words, “Mother is dead”. The ways of the Lord are mysterious, but we should so live as to be able to meet our dear mothers beside that crystal sea. “All that are born must die”.

DAYTON - Harold C Hughes, 76, of Dayton, Rt. 1, Box 3E4, died Monday at his home following a long illness.

A native of Ogallala, Neb., he moved here three and a half years ago from Alaska. He was a retired Heavy Equipment Operator. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union.

Surviving are widow Frances Hughes, sons Carl, Philomath,, Peter, Austin, TX, and Dan Hughes, LaPine; brother David Hughes, Fremont, Calif; sisters Flossie Pellette, Canby, and Eva Walraven, Sidney, Neb; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Dayton Christian Church. Macy & Son mortuary, McMinnville, is in charge. The family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Joe Hughes, who was taken to Omaha recently, died there in a hospital last Thursday and was brought to Ogallala for interment last Sunday.

Mr. Hughes filled a number of county offices during his long residence here. At one time he was sheriff, also deputy sheriff when Mark DePriest was sheriff, jailer, and janitor at the court, Precinct Assessor for a number of years, and town marshal at different times.

During the time he held office as sheriff this country was over run with outlaws and bad men, some of them are sleeping now in Boot Hill cemetery. Hughes and Mr. Southard, a brother-in-law, went to North River to arrest some prowling indians, at which time Mr. Southard met his death at the hands of the indians. Hughes barely escaped with his life.

When Joe Hughes first came to this country the buffalo and antelope were familiar animals and could be seen every day getting water and they frequently grazed with the cattle.

"Old Joe" as he was familiarly known and called will be missed not alone by his family but by others who have known and respected him for years.

Joseph Hughes was born in Indiana August 22, 1845 and died at the M. E. hospital at Omaha March 4^th, 1915, aged 69 years 6 months and 10 days. On Nov. 7, 1867 he was married to Elizabeth Southard at Knoxville, Marion County, Iowa. He, and his family, located at Roscoe, Nebraska in the year 1873 and resided in Keith County during the balance of his life. Besides his wife here to mourn his loss Wm Hughes of this city, S. F. Hughes of Lodi, Cal, A. J. Hughes of Oregon, and Joseph Jr. of Kalamath Falls Oregon.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, C. Arrowsmith funeral director.

William W. Hughes passed away at the Hughes home in East Ogallala, Thanksgiving morning. Funeral services were held from the Arrowsmith chapel Saturday morning, conducted by Rev. H. J. Chamberlin. Burial in the Ogallala Cemetery.

Music was furnished by Mrs. G. C. Benson and Mrs. H. A. Chamberlin, accompanied by Mrs. Will Most.

The pallbearers were Walter Kohler, Claude Armstrong, Vernon Weeks, Jack Armstrong, William Kohler, and Fred Armstrong.

Obituary:

William Wright Hughes was born in Marysville, Iowa, August 30, 1869, and passed from this life on November 29, 1934 at his home in Ogallala, Nebraska. His age at death was 65 years, two months, and 29 days.

He is survived by his aged mother, Mrs. E. A. Hughes of Ogallala; two brothers, Andrew Jackson Hughes of Oregon, and Joseph Hughes of California; also a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, one sister, and one brother.

He came to Keith county with his parents when about two years of age. He will live in the memory of his friends as a pioneer of the Texas Trail days. He braved the dangers and privations of pioneer life helping to settle Western Nebraska.
