HOLT COUNTY OBITUARIES

You may submit your Holt County Obituaries for posting to this page. We can only post obituaries that are older than 1932, or where you have written permission from the newspaper to reprint/post them. You may submit an 'extract' for an obituary for current obituaries. Thank you for following these guidelines.Submit your obituaries to the State Coordinator.

"These are from the Rouse History that Mrs Riser and I compiled. She had a lot of the newsclippings cut out of the newspaper. That's why no name of the paper or date on some of these. She is currently in the O'Neill nursing Home." - Doris Counts

Although the obituaries listed here are from Holt County newspapers, the actual deaths and/or burials may have been in other counties or states.

BURNS FATAL TO MOTHER OF SIX CHILDREN
MRS CARL LEWIS EXPIRES FOLLOWING EXPLOSION OF JAR OF TRACTOR FUEL AS SHE ATTEMPTS TO POUR FLUID IN KITCHEN STOVE; DAUGHTER MAKES HEROIC EFFORT TO SAVE MARGARET SMITH 11, ALSO DANGEROUSLY BURNED
TRAGEDY ENDS PARTY PLANS

Gay plans for a party were blasted with tragedy results at the Carl Lewis home in south Atkinson last Saturday evening when the explosion of a jar of fuel oil inflicted fatal burns on Mrs. Lewis, mother of six children, dangerously burned Margaret Smith, 11, neighbor girl, and Kathleen Lewis, 18, who made a heroic effort to save her little friend.

Orville Lewis, 12, was slightly burned on the hands as he sought to extinguish flames on his mother. Gerald Lewis, 8 and Myron, 3, also in the kitchen at the time of the blast, were not hurt.

Mrs. Lewis, 36, died at Atkinson hospital Sunday. Her death was caused by pneumonia from inhaling flames, however, her body was almost entirely covered with severe burns that would have resulted in death.

In the Lewis kitchen late Saturday afternoon were Mrs. Lewis, her daughter, Kathleen, and sons, Orville, Gerald, and Myron, gaily preparing for a farewell party for Mr. and Mrs. Otto Smith and family, who were about to move to Iowa to make their home. They were busily cooking tasty things for the party and little Margaret Smith, 11, came over to join in the proceedings.

The fire in the kitchen range was slow for baking, so Mrs. Lewis got a jar of tractor fuel, started to pour some of the fluid on the flames in the stove. The jar, a gallon sized glass vessel such as is used for fuel tanks on many an oil stove, exploded in her hands and the whole room was enveloped in flame. The jar contained about 3 quarts of the fuel oil. Practically all of Mrs. Lewis' body except for her face was severely burned. Her son, Orville attempted to smother the flames on his mother with a coat, but she fought him off, ran to a bedroom and rolled in the bedding.

Margaret Smith ran screaming to the yard, her clothing a mass of flames. Unhurt by the blast in the kitchen, Kathleen Lewis went after her, making a heroic effort to save her life and suffering severe burns on hands and arms in doing so. She quickly caught Margaret, threw her down and attempted to beat out the flames. Edward Turner, who lives across the street from the Lewis home, and who is a brother of Mrs. Lewis, saw the Smith girl run from the kitchen. With his hands he smothered the flames on Margaret and Kathleen returned to the house to get her mother, She found her on the bed, praying for the house to fall and end her suffering.

Mr. Turner rushed his sister and the Smith girl to the hospital. Kathleen was given first aid treatment by Dr Mizar, who then took her to the hospital. Margaret's clothing was completely burned off below the waist and she suffered severe burns on her hips and legs and one arm. Her condition is critical, although yesterday she was reported by Dr Douglas as slightly improved.

Sounding of the fire alarm at 7:15 Saturday evening marked the time of the tragedy and the fire department made another record run, having one thousand feet of hose laid and ready for use within a few minutes. Tony Burda, Charles McDonald, Weaver Bausch, and other neighbors of the Lewis family had the fire almost completely extinguished however, when the department arrived, and those needing medical care had been taken to the hospital by Mr. Turner.

Considerable damage was done to the kitchen by fire and to other parts of the house by soot and dense smoke. The house is owned by Mrs. Francis Schrunk of Lincoln and was formerly the John Hunt home.

It was the third time that Mrs. Lewis had been severely burned. When a girl of 15 she was badly burned by a grass fire while she was cleaning off the grave of her grandparents in the Phoenix Cemetery.

Two years ago, when the family lived at Eli, Nebr., she suffered almost fatal burns while attempting to carry a flaming oil stove from her kitchen. At that time her legs were terribly burned and she had to be taken 65 miles before receiving hospital care. She was confined to the hospital 77 days before being able to return home and one leg remained slightly crippled.

The funeral, one of the largest ever held here, was at Methodist Church, Tuesday. Interment was in Phoenix Cemetery.

Jennie Mae Turner was born to Mr. and Mrs. Federick Turner on May 16,1899, near Phoenix, Nebr. where she spent the greater part of her childhood days. She passed away in Atkinson, April 28,1935, at the age of 35 years, 11 months 12 days.

On Dec 14,1915 she was united in marriage to Carl Lewis. They were blessed with six children, all of whom, with their father, survive and mourn her death. They are Kathleen 18, Dorothy 16, Leo 15, Orville 12, Gerald, 8, Myron 3, all of Atkinson. Mrs. Lewis is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Minnie Turner of Phoenix; a sister Mrs. Henry Voquist of O'Neill; two brothers, Edward of Atkinson and John of O'Neill.

Mrs. Lewis was an exceptional mother, her sole aim being to keep her family in the Christ like way. Shortly after their marriage in1916, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis were baptized and became members of the Methodist Church at Phoenix. On Easter Sunday, a year ago, shortly after moving to Atkinson from Eli, they became members of the Methodist Church of this city and presented their younger children for baptism. She selected the hymns which were sung and read at her funeral.
