Mr and Ms W A Fenner of Marshaltown, Iowa, were transient visitors in the city Thursday.

   35 years ago Mrs Fenner, then Miss Lizzie Staples, was a resident here and the burial plot of her parents is in Woodlawn.

   She was one of the early day "flappers" and inquiring of old friends of her ancient persecutors wondered if there were any of those "old hens" left yet.

   Having attained to matronly years and worldly prosperity she gets humorous recalling the old prophesies.

BLAST FROM SHOTGUN KILLS EARL STERNS
ATKINSON MAN, 42, FOUND DEAD NEAR EMMET, CORNER SAYS DEATH IS ACCIDENTAL

   Earl D Sterns, 42, farmer and lifelong resident of this community was found dead from a shotgun blast in a field about a mile east of Emmet, Thanksgiving Day. Acting Corner Julius D Cronin, O'Neill, who investigated the death, said evidence disclosed that his death was caused by accidental discharge of the gun. There were no witnesses to the tragedy.

   The body was found a few feet inside a wire fence, which enclosed the field, and the shotgun was lying near the body. The car Sterns was driving was parked at the side of the road nearby. From the position of the body and the gun it was thought likely that the gun was accidentally discharged as he crossed the fence. The charge struck him in the head. No inquest was held.

   Mr Sterns was a World War veteran. He is survived by a wife, and two children. He had been farming in this community for about 20 years, was well liked in neighborhoods where he lived and had a great number of friends in this vicinity.

   Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Atkinson Saturday. The church was filled to capacity. Members of the John Farley Post American Legion of which Mr Sterns was a member, attended the rites in a body and had charge of the burial service. Pallbearers were Legionnaires. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Earl David Sterns, second son of William and Anna Sterns, was born at Atkinson on Dec 3,1897 and departed this life on Nov 30,1939 at the age of 41 years, 11 months and 27 days.

   He grew to manhood on a farm 15 miles northeast of Atkinson. When the US entered the World War he enlisted in the army and served as an infantryman for the duration of the war. After his discharge he came home to take up farming.

   He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Rossman, at Butte, May 16,1922. To this union were born two children, Leonard, age 16 years, and Kay LaRae age 1 year 6 months.

   He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife and children; his mother, Mrs Anna Sterns of Atkinson, two sisters and two brothers, Mrs Z E Dickerson of Los Angeles, Cal, Mrs Elizabeth Ford of Atkinson, Albert and Elmer of Atkinson.

BODY OF EARL STERNS FOUND IN FIELD LAST THURSDAY, NOV 30

   The body of Earl D Sterns was found last Thursday afternoon just across the fence from his car which was on the road about a mile and half east of Emmet and on the south road past the Ryan Ranch. The body was discovered by two boys and they in turn notified Pat McGinnis of Emmet who notified the authorities. County Attorney J D Cronin and Deputy Sheriff CC Bergstrom made the investigation. They found that a shotgun was nearby and he was shot in the head, with all indications that it was probably an accident.

   Funeral services were held Saturday Dec 2 at the Methodist Church and interment followed in the cemetery at Atkinson.

   Earl David Sterns was born Dec 3,1897 at Atkinson. He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Rossman and to them were born two children who with the wife survive. The children are Leonard and Kay Laree. He is also survived by his mother who lives at Atkinson, and two brothers and two sisters, Albert of Atkinson, Elmer of O'Neill, Mrs Violet Dickison of Los Angeles, Cal and Mrs Robert Ford of Atkinson.

   Mr Sterns was a World War Veteran.

   J J Stilson, pioneer Atkinson business man, former mayor of this city and one of the prominent citizens for more than 40 years, passed away at his home here early Friday, Nov 8.

   Mr Stilson had been in ill health for the past few years and for many months had been confined to his home practically all the time. Early Thursday morning he suffered a stroke and was discovered unconscious by his wife. He never regained consciousness and passed away shortly after midnight that night.

   Funeral services were held at the home Monday, Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery with Masonic rites being conducted at the grave.

   Mr Stilson was born at Rockford, Ill, Nov 19,1854 and lacked only 12 days of being 81 years of age at the time of his death. He spent his boyhood days near Fairfax, Iowa, and attended Coe college at Cedar Rapids.

   He was married at Fairfax, Iowa on Nov 26,1884 to Adda A Brown and to this union three children were born, Bertha, Mrs Brush of Norfolk, Earl B of Hudson, Mich and Eula, Mrs Dan Cheney who died in 1926. Mrs Stilson and two children survive him.

   Mr and Mrs Stilson moved to Nebr in 1888 and to Atkinson in 1893 where they continued to make their home. Mr Stilson was one of this city's pioneer businessman. during the first years of his residence here he was engaged in the farm implement business. Later he operated a creamery in this city and following that was a hardware merchant. Some 25 or 30 years ago he became one of Atkinson's first automobile dealers and brought the first Ford agency to this city.

   For the past 20 years of more he had been engaged in the real estate business. Ill health forced him to retire from business activity about four years ago. During the years he was actively engaged in business here, Mr Stilson was one of the leaders in community progress. He served as mayor of Atkinson in the years 1928 and 1929.

   He was a member of Atkinson Lodge, was a past master of the order, served the lodge in its various chairs and was one of the oldest living members.

   Mr and Mrs Stilson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home here a year ago at which time they received the congratulations and best wishes of scores of their neighbors and friends.

   Mrs Stilson has closed her home here and went with her son, Earl to his home in Hudson, Mich, where she will remain during the winter.

   All business places in Atkinson were closed Monday during the funeral services.

Besides his parents the little one's death is mourned by his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Frank Pruss of O'Neill, and one little sister, Mary Ann, age 2 years.

DEATH STRIKES MARY E THOMAS SUDDENLY
WAS DAUGHTER OF A T BLACKBURN, PIONEER COUNTRY DOCTOR OF ATKINSON

   Friends of Mr and Mrs W J Thomas of Fairfax, SD, were shocked Monday , Jan 26, to learn that Mrs Thomas had passed away suddenly at Atkinson, where she had been for a week taking treatment and was thought to have been much improved until a few minutes before her death.

   Mrs Thomas had been in ill health for a number of years and recently had taken treatment at Atkinson at various times, however her condition was not considered dangerous.

   Mrs Thomas, before her marriage on Oct 24,1907,was Mary Ella Blackburn, the only daughter of Dr and Mrs A T Blackburn of Atkinson. She was born at Waldo, Wis on April 28,1887 and came to Atkinson in early childhood with her parents. Her father, who died March 19,1901 was one of Atkinson's pioneer doctors. Mary's girlhood days were spent here where she assisted her widowed mother in making a home for herself and her younger brother, Robert.

   At Mrs Thomas's home in Atkinson on Jan 27,1910, almost exactly 21 years ago the day of her death, she and 8 other young ladies organized the Sorosis Club, which today is one of the prominent women's clubs of this city. She also became a member of Atkinson Order of Eastern Star and two years ago transferred her membership to the chapter at Bonesteel, SD.

   Upon her graduation from Atkinson high school in 1905, she completed her education at Nebr Wesleyan U of Lincoln.

   On Oct 24,1907 she was united in marriage to William J Thomas. who was then a representative of the Chicago and North Western Railway Company at Inman. 9 years later they moved to Fairfax, SD where Mr Thomas is agent for the North Western. Mrs Blackburn, Mary's invalid mother, lived for many years in the Thomas home and until her death in 1928 was constantly cared for by her daughter.

   Surviving Mrs Thomas are her husband and one brother, Robert A Blackburn of Omaha; two cousins, A R Blackburn and G W Blackburn and other relatives at Oak and Royal; and an aunt and two uncles in Los Angeles, California.

   Funeral services were held Wednesday at Methodist Church, Atkinson, burial was made here in Woodlawn Cemetery beside the bodies of her mother and father and her grandmother and grandfather, the latter being an early day Methodist minister.

FRANK TINBORG, PIONEER, RESIDENT OF EMMET, BURIED IN ATKINSON

   Funeral services for Frank Tinborg were held in Atkinson Wednesday at St John's Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev Wm G Vahle and interment was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Mr Tinborg was an old resident of the county, coming to Holt from Saunders Co, Nebr, in 1883. His death occurred at his farm home near Emmet, Monday, March 23 in his 89th year.

   Deceased was a member of the Swedish Lutheran Church and was born in Stockholm, Sweden, Aug 20,1835. He came to America at the age of 17. In 1862 he was married to Sophia Richard, who preceded him in death April 27,1911.

   The surviving members of this family are three sons, Fred, William, Clarence, and one daughter Mrs Minnie Enbody of Emmet.

   Edward R Totten was born Nov 22,1887 at Omaha, Nebr, and died at Atkinson, Nebr, June 28,1906, being 18 years, 7 months 6 days.

   His mother died when he was but a year and half old and he was kindly cared for by Mrs J W Lamb of Boon, Iowa. He came to Atkinson, Jan 2,1906 in search of health and for a time seemed to improve but later was taken worse and died after a short illness of four days.

   The funeral services were held in M E Church Saturday morning, conducted by pastor C E Connell and the remains were laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   He leaves to mourn his loss Mrs J W Lamb, who raised him and Mrs Anna Perry.

MRS FRED WAHL DIES AT HER HOME HERE
HAD BEEN AILING FOR YEARS, BUT SERIOUSLY ILL ONLY FOR A FEW DAYS

   Mrs Fred Wahl passed away at her home in Atkinson Tuesday March 11, following a serous illness which came upon her suddenly early Sunday morning. Mrs Wahl had been ailing for a number of years but her condition was never serious until a few days before her death.

   Funeral services were held at Methodist Church, Wednesday, burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Anna Augusta Holtz was born March 8,1872 at Broadhead, Wis and departed this life March 11,1930 at her home in Atkinson. At the time of her death she was 58 years and two days of age. She emigrated to Western, Nebr, with her parents when a small child where she spent the greater part of her life. The family moved to Atkinson in 1913.

   On Jan 16,1890 she was married to Fred Wahl at Western, Nebr. To this union was born 7 children, all of whom were with her during her last illness.

   At the age of 16 she was converted at Western and joined the Methodist Church at that place. Later she transferred her membership to Atkinson and was a member of this church at the time of her death. She was a faithful member of the church, and an untiring worker in helping others in need.

   She is survived by her husband, 3 sons and 4 daughters.

   Edwin of Western, Nebr, Jesse of Eli, Nebr, Harvey of Atkinson, Mrs Elsie Carson of Canova, SD, Mrs Clara Senteney of Oakland, Nebr, Mrs Alice Shaffer of Stuart, Mrs Josephine Keogh of Curtis, Nebr. 21 grandchildren, 4 sisters and 3 brothers and a host of friends.

ARCHIBALD A WALRATH

   Archibald Armstrong Walrath was born at Inghams Mills, NY, on the 4th of Dec 1841, and passed away at the Battle Mountain Sanitarium at Hot Springs, SD on the 29th day of March at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 25 days.

   Mr Walrath served his country in the days of the Civil War, first in Co I 68th Regiment, NY, infantry from which he was honorably discharged in 1863 for wounds received in battles. In 1864 he re-enlisted in Co A 121st NY Infantry and served there until he was honorably discharged in 1865.

   During his service he was engaged in 17 active battles and was wounded 7 times, once in the head, in the chest, five times in the legs, these being responsible for the fatal malady that took him, hardening of the arteries commencing in his legs.

   In Jan 1866 deceased was united in marriage with Lana Kretner. To this union 4 children were born, the 3 oldest dying in early childhood in NY.

   In March 1885 he came with his wife and only child to Nebraska, being told his wife must go west for her health. He was among the pioneers of this county and lived to see the country thickly settled.

   In July 1900 his faithful companion passed to her reward and he has made his home with his son and family until the last 7 years. Since then he has spent his winters at the Old Soldiers Home at Hot Springs, SD. and the summers with his son and family, thus his last home coming was in the spring as usual.

   He leaves to mourn his death one son, Martin Walrath, two very aged sisters in NY state and seven grandchildren, also a number of nieces and nephews.

   During his earlier residence here, Mr Walrath engaged extensively in truck gardening and growing small fruit. Later for a number of years, he and his son operated a meat market here, but for a good many years failing health has prevented his activity in any line of work.

   Following a recent operation which gave but temporary relief, he gradually grew weaker until the end came.

   The body sent here for burial arrived Sunday and was taken to the home of his son. The funeral service was held at Presbyterian Church Monday, Rev W H Guest officiating and burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Each of the following organizations GAR, American Legion, Legion Auxiliary attended the funeral service in a body. The American Legion with firing squad, took military charge of the burial services. A large concourse of old friends were gathered to do honor to the memory of one who was faithful not only as a soldier but as a citizen and a friend.

INEZ FARMER DIES FOLLOWING STROKE
A J WARNER, 70, PASSED AWAY AT HIS HOME EARLY ON NEW YEARS DAY

   A J Warner, farmer living 6 miles southwest of Inez, died at his home on New Year's Day, following a paralytic stroke. Mr Warner was 70 years old. He and his family have lived on the farm they bought near Inez, the past 13 years.

   Funeral services were conducted at the home, Saturday, and burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery, Atkinson.

   Alton J Warner, was born in Bruner Co, Iowa, on the fourth of Aug 1859. He was married to Gertrude Wehrstein at Onawa, Iowa April 8,1901. He and his family came to Holt Co from Smithland, Iowa, 13 years ago. Surviving him are his wife, four children, March E and Alton J who live at home, Mrs May Rockford of Inez and Mrs Delia Spencer of Lincoln. Four children by a former marriage are also living, they are Mrs Edith Parkhoff of Otoe, Iowa, Mrs Bertha Vaughn of Denton, Wash, John and Leo. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.

   Mrs Warner and her sons March and Alton will continue to operate the farm near Inez.

DALLAS CLARK WATERS

   Dallas Clark Waters, son of Mr and Mrs E A Waters, was born in Pawnee Co, Nebr, May 21,1907.

   In 1913 he came with his parents to Holt County, living on a farm southwest of Atkinson until a few years ago when the family moved to town.

   Dallas was a member of the Junior Class AHS and until his recent illness was interested in all the activities of the school.

   He first contracted measles about three weeks ago and complications followed which in his weakened condition he was unable to throw off. Pneumonia was the immediate cause of his death which occurred the morning of March 12,1924.

   His untimely death came as a shock to family and friends. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family in their affliction.

   Rev E L Peterson conducted funeral services Thursday at Woodlawn Cemetery where interment was made.

WIFE AND FIVE CHILDREN SURVIVE; TWO SONS DIED IN SERVICE DURING WORLD WAR

   E A Waters, prominent Atkinson business man died at 6 o'clock Wednesday morning at the hospital in Stuart where last Sunday he was taken for an operation following a sudden serious illness caused by a ruptured gall bladder.

   Mr Waters was stricken suddenly last Saturday afternoon and was taken home from his place of business. His condition was serious and his family was advised that death would be certain unless an operation was performed quickly and that every then there was but small chance of his recovery. The operation was performed late Sunday night at the Stuart hospital.

   Friends who visited him at the hospital Tuesday morning said he seemed to be getting along nicely and was determined that he would get well.

   Funeral services will be held this afternoon at Presbyterian Church, Atkinson.

   Mr Waters lacked three months of being 70 years of age. Since 1919 he has been in business in Atkinson, starting principally in raising, buying and selling seeds. His business grew to included all kinds of feeds for livestock and poultry, flour and coal.

   Many times in recent years the company whom he represented, Purina Mills has made awards to Mr Waters for ranking first place in volume of sales of their products in this territory.

   In community affairs Mr Waters always took a great interest and any movement that he believed for the best interests of the community always received his support, financially and other wise.

   Elvin Adelbert Waters, son of Warren and Fidelia Waters, was born in Fabius, Onondaga Co, NY on July 10,1861. When a young man of 23 he came west and stopped at Page Center, Iowa, to make his home. There on March 17,1888 he was married to Miss Nellie Steeves.

   To Mr and Mrs Waters 11 children were born. 5 of them together with their mother survive Mr Waters. Two children died in infancy when the family lived near Page Center, Iowa. A daughter Winona Agnes, passed away in Atkinson, Aug 10,1914. Their two eldest sons, Howard and Dale, died while in the service of their country during the World War. Dale at a training camp in California and Howard in France. The youngest son, Dallas, passed away in March 1924.

   The surviving children are Mrs Della Dickau of Atkinson, Dewey in California, Mrs Ina Scheetz of North Platte, Eva and Frank at home with their mother.

   Mr Waters was a very active man all through life and was one who never gave up in all endeavor unless compelled to do so by physical illness. He and his family came to Holt Co from Iowa in 1913.

   Winona Agnes Waters, was born Dec 17,1908 in Pawnee Co, Nebr, and died Aug 10,1914 at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs E A Waters at the age of 5 years, 7 months and 23 days. She had always been a strong, robust child and her sudden illness which ended in death was only a period of five days and a great shock to her family. Her life among them was a flower which growth up in the morning and before the noon day is plucked by our Heavenly Father, who has need of her in His Garden of Paradise. But far better to, have had her transient life been with us than to never have known her blessed influence, for she was of a sweet and kindly quiet disposition , the pet and baby of the home and loved by all who knew her. She was one of the Lord's little Sabbath school scholars and had received her certificate for regular attendance, and her little gold badge of which she had talked so long and wore it for the first time the day of her burial and it will be the key to her Heavenly Home. O that we all with little Winona, might have such a badge. She leaves to mourn for her besides her father and mother, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. One brother and sister having preceded her in infancy.

   The funeral services were held from the Evangelical Church in Green Valley Tuesday. Rev W S York of the M E Church officiating. The remains were brought to Atkinson and laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery.

DEATH TAKES ONE OF TOWN'S EARLY SETTLERS

   Death came to Willard A Wheeler, one of Atkinson's earliest settlers at his home in this city Saturday, the 14th inst. He passed away suddenly from a heart attack.

   Mr. Wheeler had not been in rugged health for a number of years, having suffered more or less with heart ailments. He had but recently left his bed following an illness from this cause. He had apparently recovered and had gone about as usual in the intervening period. He visited down town Friday, passing upon current topics in his greetings, and feeling in his customary cheerful mood.

   W A Wheeler had been long identified with Atkinson and the community, coming here 48 years ago he was one among the first to establish a residence and join a nucicus of settlers in the establishment of a town.

   Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Wheeler came here in 1880 from Kankakee, Illinois and with their son Willard, aged 20 years.

   The next year after their arrival he and his father started a general merchandise business. Their location was the present site of the First National Bank and their business place about the first one opened. He served as postmaster a term during the administration of President Cleveland.

   June 1,1886 he was married to Miss Laura Graham of Atkinson, who died 1888. Mrs. Wheeler at the age of 19 years was the first person to united with the Presbyterian church, an profession of faith and was organist and Sunday School teacher until her death.

   Following the death of his wife, Mr. Wheeler moved to Hot Springs, SD, where he resided several years and was elected treasurer of Fall River County.

   Feb 4,1891 at Rapid City, SD he was married to Miss Carrie Oleson. They lived in Hot Springs until 1897 , moving then to his farm in Sand Creek Township, Holt County near Atkinson. Mrs. Wheeler died in hospital at Lincoln, Feb 19,1904.

   Returning to Atkinson from the farm Mr. Wheeler engaged in Cement block manufacturing and erected several business buildings on his properties in town.

   In 1911 Mr. Wheeler retired from active business life. Sept 16,1923 he married Mrs. Rosa Johns who survives him.

   Funeral services took place at Presbyterian Church, Atkinson, Monday. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

MELISSA WHIPPLE, 82, IS CALLED BY DEATH
RITES HELD AT METHODIST CHURCH FOR PIONEER WHO LIVED IN HOLT COUNTY 57 YEARS

   Miss Melissa Whipple, widely known pioneer woman of southwestern Holt County, passed away Thursday, Nov 30 at the Victor Howarth home near Josie. Miss Whipple was 82 years of age and had been a resident of Holt County for 57 years. She and her brother, the late Sanford Whipple, took land near Josie where they lived for many years.

   Funeral services were held in Atkinson at the Methodist Church Saturday. Burial was made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

   Melissa Whipple was born near Mazeppa, Minn., May 6,1857 and passed away near Josie, Nebr., Nov 30,1939, at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 24 days.

   In 1859 she moved with her parents and two brothers to Marysville, Kan, where the family lived for 14 years. The father died in Kansas, and in1873 the mother and three children moved back to Minn., and settled near Orenoco, where they lived 9 years.

   In 1882 they came to Nebraska, and took land in Holt County southwest of Atkinson. After living there a number of years, Miss Whipple, and her brother, Sanford, moved to land near Josie, in the southwest corner of the county. She lived there until about two years ago, when the land was sold and she went to make her home with the Victor Howarth family, at which place she died.

   When she was a young girl she united with the Advent Church and remained in that faith until her death.

   Her death is mourned by one niece, Miss Ora Whipple of Josie, and a number of cousins, also many neighbors and friends in the community where she lived so long.

   The summons that came to Uncle Daniel White was a very sudden one on Monday, the Hot Springs Star contained a little notice of his cutting himself on the head by his axe, striking the clothes line, while cutting wood. We are told that in applying snow to his wound, he caught cold, from which came the attack of pneumonia that carried him off. None of his immediate family was present at the time of his death, except his aged wife. His son, James, with whom he lived, being in the country buying cattle.

THE VENERABLE DANIEL WHITE FINDS REST ON THE SHINING SHORE

   Daniel White was born at Oxville, Sctot Co., Illinois on Nov 23,1833 and died at Hot Springs, SD Dec 21,1893. In 1855 he was married to Eliza D Leach. She died in March 1856. On Nov 11,1857 he was married at Oxville, Ill to Martha E Sawees. who still survives him. To this marital union 6 children were born, 2 girls and 4 boys. Of this number but two are living, James and Edward, both residents of Hot Springs, but well and favorably known in this vicinity.

   Daniel White was a man who filled his life mission with scrupulous fidelity in his convictions of right and duty. Born and reared under the influences of that liberal christian denomination the Universalist, his mind was not warped or contracted by Calvinistic creed or Puritincic dogmas, and his charity reached above and beyond the boundaries defined by sectarian prejudice. In all his business and social relations he was trustful, kind and generous, without ostentationor display- a quiet, unassuming, useful and respected citizen. He came to Holt County in 1886 and his record here as a worthy man and citizen is attested by all who knew him. He removed to Hot Springs, SD in1891 and there closed his earthly career. Being a worthy member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, his brethren in that fraternity at Hot Springs, after his mortal dissolution, took charge of the remains and they were shipped to this place by the Elkhorn line, accompanied by his son, Edward and Willard Wheeler and were received by Atkinson Lodge AFAM and under the watch and ward of the Lodge were kept till Sunday, the 24th ult, when they were interred in the Atkinson Cemetery with appropriate honors.

   The Graphic extends its sincere condolence to the bereaved family.

JAMES WHITE, 51 YEARS A MASON, IS DEAD

   James White died at his home in Atkinson Sunday, June 24, after a gradual failing of health extending back a year or more, however it was only a few days before his death that he was confined to his bed. Mr White was born in England, and was almost 80 years old, and for 51 years had been a member of the Masonic Lodge, being taken into Village Lodge, Burton, Ohio in the year 1877.

   When he was about 2? years old, Mr White came to America and settled at Ripen, Wis, where an uncle resided. A year later he made a trip across the continent to California, attracted there by the prospect of high wages, traveling on one of the first through trains that crossed the continent on the Union Pacific railroad.

   Mr and Mrs White celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1923 at which time all but two of their 9 children were at home. At the funeral , which was conducted at White home Tuesday, Mrs White and all of her children were present.

   Rev Heizer spoke of Mr. White as being a nice old gentleman, courteous and kind, with a good memory and full of the memories and flavor of old England. He was a kind husband and a loving father. He had many friends in all of the places of his residence. During the past year and a half he has been gradually failing in health and in spite of all the care that loving friends could give, he quietly faded out and passed away.

   James White was born in Harworth, Nottinghamshire, England, on the 24th day of Nov, 1848 and died at his home in Atkinson, Sabbath morning, June 24,1928 at the age of 79 years and 7 months. He was the third son in a family of 11 children, only one of whom survives him. This brother lives in England.

   James was baptized and christened in the Church of England when he was a babe. As a small child he herded crows from the fields, since they were not to be shot, and a little later he herded the sheep. He worked some in the mines and in the potteries before he came to America. There was always work to be done and books were scarce so that he had little opportunity to go to school. In the evenings his mother gathered her children about the table and, using the Bible as a text book, taught them to read and write. James committed to memory much of the Bible and the church creed. In later life he was a constant reader and was well informed. Even in his recent illness he read the papers.

   When almost 20 he came to America and after a year in Wisconsin and three years in California, he went to Ohio and for 9 years resided at Chardon, Geauga Co, working at the shoemaker trade. In 1873 at Burton, Ohio, he was married to a young lady, who, though she was not related to him, had the same name, Miss Clara White.

   In 1882 Mr. and Mrs. White moved to Fairfield, Clay Co, Nebr., and farmed for 28 years during which they experienced the typical hard times of pioneer life, including hail storms, grasshoppers, drouth and chintz bugs. In 1910 Mr. and Mrs. White came to Holt County and lived on a farm until 1918, when they moved to Atkinson.

   Mr. White is survived by his wife, Mrs. Clara White; 9 children, Willis S of Fremont, George of Atkinson, Ray James of Fremont, Orio of Sioux Falls, SD, Mrs. Nellie Loub of Ainsworth, Frank of Atkinson, Mrs. Mary Loub of Ainsworth, Miss Florence of Ainsworth, Allen of Emmet. There are also 17 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
