THE LATE ANTONA TASLER

     Last week's Graphic gave details of the accidental death of Antona Tasler, which occurred in Atkinson on the 20th ult. Since that issue, we have been kindly furnished with the following data connected with the life of this worthy man.

     Antona Tasler was born in Austria-Hesse, Empire of Germany, Jan 16,1832; died in Atkinson, Nebr Aug 20,1894. He was of Bohemian parentage, and actively served 8 years and 4 months in the Austrian army, and he bore honored scars-mute, but impressive evidence of his courage and valor in the line of a soldier's duty.

     On Jan 28,1859, he was married to Josephine Rouse, and to this union was born 12 children, 9 of whom are living-Anna Lana, of Osborne Co, Kan; Antona A Tasler of Atkinson, Nebr; Josephine Humpal of David City, Nebr; Mary Humpal of the same place; Matilda Neeley of Stuart, Nebr; Joseph, Frances, Frank and Albena, who are yet at home. 2 children were born in Bohemia prior to the emigration and settlement of the family in America. Mr Tasler first located in Ringgold Co,Iowa, where the remaining numer of the children were born. 3 of the 12 children born to this worthy family died in infancy. Mr Tasler removed from Iowa to Holt Co, Nebr, in March 1884, and he settled on a farm, 12 miles southwest of Atkinson, where he lived until last year, when he removed to H L Putnam's farm, 5 miles west of Atkinson, where he resided at the time of his death.

     The Graphic, heretofore, briefly recited the tragic event of his violent death caused by the running away of his spirited team, and in connection with this biographical sketch it desires to pay a passing tribute to the memory of one who had bravely buffeted the many vicissitudes of life, both on the field of carnage in a, to us, foreign clime and in honorable struggle for subsistence and competence amongst the avant-coureurs of our western civilization, and during these long years of physical, mental, and moral strife that surrounded and confronted his life-walk, his Christian faith was never impaired, his integrity never assailed or his manhood compromised by any act of perfidy. Upright in his business methods, genial in his social relations, industrious and frugal in his habits, he commanded the respect and esteem of the entire circle of his acquaintance. The community in common with the stricken wife and bereaved children, mourn the loss of this good man.

A SHOCKING TRAGEDY
Antone Tasler Whirled to Death in a Wagon Wheel
A Vicious Horse Seriously Injures Geo Humpal While Bearing Tidings of Tasler's Death to His Family

     One of the most shocking accidents that ever happened in Western Holt occurred in Atkinson last Monday - Mr Antone Tasler, a highly respected and worthy citizen residing almost 4 miles west of this village, came to town with a somewhat spirited team and after transacting certain business that called him here, he drove to the north side of the railroad track, where he attempted to attach a buggy to the rear end of his wagon. While thus engaged his team became restless and started to run. Mr Tasler rushed to reach the lines lying in the wagon box. In this effort he was unsuccessful and, by some inexplicable means, became entangled in one of the front wheels of the wagon, and during the mad flight of the horses, became literally "Broken on the wheel" until life was extinct. His bruised and mangled body was tenderly cared for by sympathizing friends. On Wed his remains were interred in the Catholic Cemetery adjacent to this village, followed by the largest funeral cortege ever witnessed in Atkinson. Next week THE GRAPHIC will publish a biographical sketch of his life and pay a deserved tribute to his memory.

     Immediately after the death of Mr Tasler the tidings of the sad event was carried to the Tasler neighborhood by friends from town. Jacob Humpal and son, George, repaired to the Tasler residence, and while leading their team into the stable a vicious horse kicked the latter with terrific force, knocking him senseless and was feared, for a time, that the young man would not recover. George was, at one time a faithful employee in THE GRAPHIC office and we sincerely hope he is not so seriously injured as reported.

RITES HELD FOR TONY TASLER, 86

     Funeral services were held for Anton (Tony) Tasler, Sat, April 22 in St Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson with burial in St Joseph's Cem.

     The Rev Robert Schmitz officiated and Alex Cleary and Gilbert Schneider were lectors. Pallbearers were nephews, Charles Jr and Dewayne Tasler, Dale Gilbert, Don Schaaf, Wilmer McConnell and Alvin Krysl.

     Mr Tasler died Thur morning at Good Samaritan Center where he had been a resident since Oct,1976.

     He was the second son of the late Anton A and Caroline (Cora) Mlinar Tasler, born at Butte on June 16,1891. When he was a few weeks old, the Tasler family moved to a farm 12 miles southwest of Atkinson in the Green Valley community. After his marriage to Mary Prussa, June 23,1913 they continued living on a ranch in Green Valley.

     In 1952, they moved to Atkinson where Mr Tasler was semi retired doing carpenter work in his spare time. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

     Four daughters were born to the couple, Irene, who died in 1937 at the age of 22, Mrs Ethel Spittler of Orinda, Cal; Mrs A P (Florence) Andrus of Seattle, Wash; and Mrs Ed (Marianne) Jansen of Atkinson.

     Besides his wife and three daughters, he is survived by 7 grandsons, Dennis, martin and Craig Spittler, Phillip and Roger Andrus, and Dan and Todd Jansen; 3 granddaughters, Miss Cynthia Spittler of Honolulu, Hawaii, Mrs Don (Sandra Jansen ) Krieger of Bassett; and Mrs Greg (Bonny Jansen) Pospichal of Atkinson; 2 great grandsons, Greg Spittler and Mark Krieger of Bassett ; and 1 great granddaughter,; brothers, Clarence and Charley and a sister, Tillie Cearns, all of Atkinson.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Irene, brothers,Fred and Bill and a sister Mary

RITES AT ST JOSEPH CHURCH THIS MORNING FOR ANTON A TASLER

     Requiem high mass will be offered at St Joseph's Catholic Church Fri morning for Anton A Tasler, 80, who died of a heart attack last Tue afternoon at 2:30.

     Mr Tasler, one of the earliest settlers of the farming and ranching territory southwest of Atkinson, had lived for about 60 years on the place he homesteaded 12 miles southwest of here.

     Born in Czechslovakia on Nov 24,1863, he came to America at the age of 2 years, with his parents, Anton and Josie Rosh Tasler. The family settled in Ringgold County, Iowa, and lived there for several years before coming to Holt County.

     Mr Tasler's parents also were homesteaders southwest of here, and lived in this community until their death some years ago. When young Anton became of age, he took a homestead near that of his parents, and lived there the remainder of his life.

     He died suddenly Tue afternoon soon after lying down to rest after telling members of the family that he did not feel very well.

     He was married about 52 years ago to Miss Cora Mlinar, who survives him.

     The Rev AA Lehmen,pastor of St Joseph's parish, will conduct the funeral rites this morning. Burial will be in St Joseph's Cemetery beside the bodies of his parents. The pallbearers will be Charles Dobias, Joseph Mlinar, and Charles Mlinar, all of Atkinson; Dan Reiser of Butte, William Jonas of Burwell, and Harry Mlinar of Stuart.

     Relatives who mourn his death are his wife, Cora; 5 sons, Fred, Anton J, William, Clarence and Charles, all of this community; 1 daughter, Mrs Matilda Cearns, of Atkinson; 2 grandsons, and 11 granddaughters; 1 brothers, Joseph Tasler of Peru, 4 sisters, Mrs John Dobias of Atkinson, Mrs Louis Humpal of Omaha, Mrs Elmer Neeley of Albion and Mrs Frank Humpal of Kansas. A large number of friends, neighbors and other relatives also mourn his passing.

CORA TASLER, HOLT PIONEER, DIES AT 87

     Mrs Cora Mlinar Tasler who came to Atkinson in a covered wagon 71 years ago, died Sat evening, Nov 12, at the Atkinson Memorial Hospital at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 2 days. She was the widow of the late Anton A Tasler.

     Until she was hospitalized Sept 27, Mrs Tasler lived with her daughter, Mrs Ray Cearns, on the Tasler home place 7 miles west and 5 miles south of Atkinson, which had been her home ever since her marriage 69 years ago.

     Funeral services were conducted Tue morning at 10 o'clock at St Joseph's Catholic Church by the Rev Francis Kubart of Omaha, a nephew of Mrs Tasler.

     Burial was in St Joseph Cemetery. The pallbearers were grandsons, Charles Tasler and DeWayne Tasler and nephews, Adolph Mlinar of Atkinson, Earl Reiser of Butte, Harry Mlinar of Stuart and Lawrence Jonas of O'Neill.

     Cora Mlinar was born in Ringgold County, Iowa, Feb 12,1868, a dau of Frank and Caroline Kodeytek Mlinar. When she was a girl in her teens, she traveled to Holt County in a covered wagon with her parents. They arrived in March, 1884 and settled on a farm 12 miles southwest of Atkinson.

     She was united in marriage to Anton A Tasler on Aug 16,1886, and they lived on their homestead farm 12 miles southwest of Atkinson. Two dau and 5 sons were born to them. One of the daughters, Mary, died in infancy.

     Her husband died Sept 28,1943. She was also preceded in death by 5 sisters, Anna Wilson, Josephine Pacha, Barbara Jonas, Tillie Radcliffe, and Mary Reiser. 7 brothers, Frank, Joseph, and John Mlinar, and four who died in infancy.

     She is survived by one dau, Mrs Ray (Tillie ) Cearns of Stuart, 5 sons, Fred and Clarence Tasler of Stuart, Anton J, William and Charles of Atkinson; 14 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs Pauline Davis and one brother, Fred Mlinar, both of Atkinson.

     Out of town relatives attending the funeral included; Father Kubart of Omaha; Mr and Mrs Earl Reiser, Mr and Mrs Dan Reiser, Mrs Clayton Klasna, and Mrs Charley Lewis, all of Butte; Mr and Mrs Lawrence Jonas and Dick, Mr and Mrs Bob Jonas, of O'Neill; Mr and Mrs Lester Jonas and sons of Columbus; Mr and Mrs Melvin Jonas, Mrs Josephine Jonas, Mrs Dorothy Klimek and Mr andMrs Walt Counts of Burwell; Mr and Mrs Harvey Thompson of Bassett; Mrs Ed Coufal of Stuart; Mrs Tillie Olson and Dau, Clara of Omaha.

MRS JOSEHINE TASLER

     Mrs Josephine Tasler who died the 17th inst, aged almost 80 years was one of the pioneer woman of Holt County residing here for almost 40 years.

     Josephine Rouse Tasler was born in Austria Hungary, July 8,1841; died at the home of her daughter, Mrs John Dobias, April 17,1921.

     On Jan 28, 1859 she was married to Antona Tasler, and to this union were born 12 children, 8 of whom are living., Anna Lana of Alton, Kan; Anton Tasler of Atkinson, Nebr, Josephine Humpal of David City, Nebr; Matilda Neely of Madison; Mary Humpal of Omaha, Joseph Tasler of Peru, and Frances Dobias and Frank Tasler of Atkinson; four of whom were born prior to the emigration and settlement of the family in America in 1866. They removed from Ringgold Co, Iowa to Holt Co, Nebr in March 1884 and homesteaded nw of Atkinson.

     Her husband died in Atkinson Aug 20th, 1824.

     She leaves besides sons and daughters, 37 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

     The funeral services were conducted from St Joseph Church in Atkinson Tuesday, April 19 and interment in the Atkinson Cemetery.

SERVICES HELD FOR MARY TASLER

     Funeral services for Mary Tasler, 87, Atkinson, were held Tuesday, Oct 16 at St Joseph Catholic Church. She died Sat at the Good Samaritan Center where she resided since 1977. Burial was in St Joseph's Cemetery.

     She was the oldest child of the late Anton and Anastacia Coufal Prussa, born Feb 12,1892 on the Prussa homestead 12 miles south of Atkinson in the Green Valley community. She was married to Anton Tasler on June 23,1913, and they lived on a ranch a mile from her parent's home. In 1952 they moved to Atkinson. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters and St Joseph's Altar Society and numerous ladies' card clubs.

     Four daughters were born to the couple, Irene, who died in 1937. Ethel Spittler of Orinda, California; Mrs A P (Florence) Andrus of Seattle, and Mrs Ed (Marianne) Jansen, Jr of Atkinson.

     Other survivors include ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren; three brothers, Charles and Ed Prussa of Stuart and Lewis Prussa of Atkinson; and one sister, Mrs Walt (Eva) Stevens of Brainard, Nebr.

     Those preceding her in death besides her husband; Anton, and daughter, Irene, were her parents and four sisters, Mrs Fred (Ella) Mack, Mrs Harry (Emma) Slaymaker, Anna and Frances.

HARVEY THOMPSON OF BASSETT DIES AFTER SURGERY

     Harvey Thompson, 56, owner and operator of the Thompson Motel, Bassett, died Wed morning at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha where he had undergone surgery for a brain tumor.

     Rosary will be held Fri evening at 7:30 and 8 o'clock at the Huston Funeral Home in Bassett. Funeral services will be held at the Catholic Church in Long Pine Sat morning. Burial will be in St Joseph's Cem, Atkinson.

     Mr Thompson's wife is the former Eva Kubart, dau of Mrs Theodore Kubart and the late Mr Kubart of Atkinson. He is also survived by one son, Larry of Bassett.

Tomsik, Annie (Anna) L

DEATH OF MRS TOMSIK

     A message from Excelsior Springs, Missouri, was received here at noon Saturday with word of the death of Mrs A Tomsik which occurred at that place a few minutes before 12 that day.

     Edward A Tomsik was summoned the day before and was present at the death of his mother. She had been in poor health for sometime with a complication of ailments and consultation with physicians developed no measure of relief.

     Mrs Tomsik went to Sheridan, Wyoming, July 12th where she remained with her son Charles C of that place, until August 4th, going from there to Excelsior Springs where her death occurred August 17. The remains reached Atkinson Sunday evening.

     The deceased was engaged in the mercantile business in Atkinson for a good many years; for 18 years in the firm of Prussa and Tomsik and for the past 7 years as A Tomsik & Co, associated with her son Edward A. For 25 years an energetic and courteous servant in her chosen field.

     Annie L Prussa, daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Prussa, was born in Bohemia, March 16th, 1868, and came with her parents to this country when about five years of age.

     In 1877 she was united in marriage with Anton L Tomsik who survives her, and to them were born two sons. These are Charles C of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Edward A of Atkinson.

     Two sisters and two brothers survive her and were present at the funeral services; These are Mrs Rosa Znamanacek of Grover, Colorado; Anton Prussa of Stuart, Nebraska, Mrs Kate Kazda of Omaha and Charles Prussa of Atkinson.

     Requiem mass was observed at St Joseph's Catholic Church Tuesday, the 20th inst and interment in Atkinson Cemetery. (St Joseph Cemetery)

     Mrs Francis Tomsik was born at Pavlicek, Bohemia, died on Saturday June 1st of lung trouble, age 63 years, 4 months and 16 days. She was married to John Tomsik June 8,1857 and the union was blessed with seven children of whom five are living to mourn her loss. She was buried from St Joseph's Church on Monday, June 3rd,

Torpy, Abbie L Murphy

RITES ARE HELD SAT FOR ABBIE L TORPY

     Funeral services were held at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson last Sat morning for Mrs Abbie L Torpy, 63, resident of this community most of her life. Mrs Torpy died Wed, Nov 8 at Denver, Colo, where she went last May because of rapidly failing health. Burial was in St Joseph's Cemetery.

     Mrs Torpy's parents were Jeremiah and Bridget Murphy, pioneer settlers in Holt Co. She was born April 26,1881, at O'Neill and in the following year moved with her parents to a homestead five miles south of Stuart.

     She was united in marriage to William Torphy in Atkinson Sept 12,1913, and they lived on a farm three miles south of Atkinson until 1925. On Feb 8 of that year, Mr Torpy died and the following Dec Mrs Torpy and her three children moved to Miami, Flo, where she lived for many years.

     A son, Francis, moved back here in the late 1930's and farmed the Torpy homeplace three miles south of here. Mrs Torpy moved back from Miami in 1939 and lived on the farm until both of her sons left for the armed forces.

     Frances B Torpy, MM-lc went into the coast guard in Jan,1942, and at present is stationed in Buffalo, NY. He was home for the funeral.

     Her other son, William John Torpy, S-2c, has been in the navy since Jan 1943, and is present on sea duty somewhere in the southwest Pacific.

     Her death is also mourned by one daughter, Lucille, who accompanied Mrs Torpy to Denver last May and remained there with her until she died.

     Other surviving relatives include two sisters, Mrs Julia Edmonds, Homestead, Flo; and Mrs Mary E James, Atkinson; two brothers, James Murphy and J P Murphy, both of this community.

     Funeral services for Loretta Marie Torpy, age 88 of Atkinson were held on May 18,2004 at St Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial was in St Joseph's Cemetery, Atkinson.

     Loretta was born May 16,1915 at Atkinson to Jack and Kate Jennings Flannery. She attended school and 2 years of college. She was united in marriage to Francis Torpy on Aug 8,1942 at New York, NY. She was a housewife and worked in the home.

     She passed away May 15,2004 in Atkinson.

     Loretta is survived by 3 sons, William and wife Pat of Ashland, Nebr, John and wife Diana of Elkhorn, Nebr, James and wife Chris of Atkinson; 5 daughters, Mary Ellen and husband Rick McClung of Lincoln, Loretta Ann and husband Bill Margreave of Chadron, Kathleen and husband Larry Kliment of Atkinson, Elizabeth and husband Paul Essig of Niles, Mich, Vicky and husband Brian Moore of Sioux City, Iowa, 20 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 son, Timothy, 2 brothers, 1 sister.

SERVICES HELD FOR MARIE TROSHYNSKI, 89

     Services for Marie Troshynski, 89, were Wed Dec 28 at St Joseph's Catholic Church. She died Dec 21, at O'Neill She was the widow of William Troshynski of Atkinson. Burial was in St Joseph's Cem.

     She was born in Atkinson on April 13,1899, the daughter of Dennis and Ellen (Dixon) Murphy. She and Thomas L McDonald were married on June 1,1920, in Emmet. Her husband was a grocer and until his death in 1948 was manager of the Council Oak Store in Atkinson. They were the parents of three children.

     She is survived by a son, John E (Jack) McDonald of Canyon Co, Cal; a daughter, Arlene Preston of Killeen, Tex; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren; sisters, Catherine Fritton of O'Neill and Loretta Troshynski of Atkinson; brothers, Fritz and Clarence Murphy, both of O'Neill.

     She was preceded in death by husband Thomas L McDonald and William Troshynski, one son, Tommy McDonald, three brothers and three sisters.

TROSHYNSKI RITES HELD AT ST JOSEPH'S

     Funeral services for Robert Francis Troshynski, 43, were held Wednesday at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Atkinson.

     Mr Troshynski, a native of Atkinson and graduate of St Joseph's high school in 1940, died Sunday, Oct 24 in Omaha.

     He was the oldest son of August and Elizabeth Judge Troshynski of Atkinson and was born here on Aug 26,1922.

     For 17 years he lived in Detroit, Mich, where he was employed by an automobile manufacturing corporation. He came back to Atkinson in 1959. He was not married.

     He is survived by his parents; 4 brothers, Edward of Omaha, Gerald of Atkinson, Leonard of Guthrie Center, Iowa and Bernard of Atkinson; 3 sisters, Mrs Frank (Rosemary) Kilmurry of Atkinson, Mrs Edwin (Rita Ann) Rome of Omaha and Mrs Robert (Lois Jean) Gutchewsky of Omaha.

     Burial was in St Joseph's Cemetery.

Tsuchiya, Maureen Ann Keating

MAUREEN A TSUCHIYA

     A memorial service for Maureen Ann Keating Tsuchiya, age 51,of Chappaqua, NY was held Oct 31,2006 at First Congregational Church in Chappaqua, New York.

     Burial will be in Keating family plot at St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Atkinson, Nebraska. Pallbearers will be Phillip Keating, Patrick Keating, James Keating, Matthew Keating, Gerard Keating, Gene Schaaf.

     Maureen was born Nov 1,1954 at Atkinson, the daughter of John and Dolores Keating of Atkinson. She was the 2nd of 8 children.

     She attended St Joseph grade and high school and graduated from West Holt High School in 1973. She attended the College of St Benedicts in St Joseph, MN and earned her bachelors degree from Trinity U in San Antonio, Tex, she also pursued her Master's degree in Public Administration at Trinity U.

     She and Takashi met by chance while both visiting Atkinson in Sept 1985. They were married on Dec 12,1987 in San Antonio, Tex. Maureen was the proud mother of Hannah Meagan who was born on April 2,1991 in New York City.

     She loved Chappaqua and all the great things in New York State. Her love for Chappaqua was equaled by her pride in her childhood home town of Atkinson and her family roots planted in Atkinson over a century ago.

     Her favorite hobbies were politics and gardening. While living in Tokoyo she attended the Democratice National Convention in 1996 as a delegate representing Democrats abroad of Japan.

     She was stricken with polio in 1957 and was a survivor. She actively lobbied for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities act and attended the signing ceremony of the act at the White House.

     Maureen died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism following knee surgery on Oct 28,2006 in New York City,NY.

     She is survived by her husband, Takashi and daughter Hannah, both of Chappaqua, NY; her parents, John and Dolores Keating of Atkinson; her mother in law Misuzu Tsuchiya of Tokyo, 1 sister, Mary Rose and husband Gene Schaaf of Bassett, 5 brothers, Phillip of Omaha,Patrick and wife Eliza of Istanbul, Turkey, James and wife Natalie of Cody, Nebr, Matthew and wife Jill of Kearney, Gerard and wife Janet of Geneva, Ill, 1 sister in law, Kumi and husband Toshiyuki Misu of Tokyo, nieces, nephews, 1 great nephew, 1 great niece.

     She was preceded in death by her 9 year old brother Mark who died in an accident on their family farm in 1967.

LOUIS TUSHLA 'MISSING' IS FIRST HOLT COUNTY BOY TO MAKE SUPREME SACRIFICE ON OPENING DAY OF WAR

     The Navy department deeply regrets to inform you.

     In telegraphic code those words have flashed over the wires, prefacing thousands of messages originating at the nation's capitol city since Japan's treacherous blasting of Pearl Harbor Sunday morning, Dec 7.

     Those messages have brought tears to the eyes, but pride to the hearts of their receivers- fathers, mothers, wives, and sweethearts of the young men who have already paid the supreme sacrifice in the performance of duty with the armed forces of this country.

     To Peter Tushla last Sunday morning came those words from the Navy department.

     Since Louis was evidently at his post of duty in the engine room of the battleship Oklahoma, which the Navy department announced capsized in Pearl Harbor it is presumed that this Atkinson youth went down with his ship.

     The telegram to Mr Tushla was the first of its kind to be received by a Holt County family. Evidently their son is the first Holt County boy to pay the supreme price for freedom in a struggle that for more than 2 years has een for the allies of this country - and promises to be for us - 1 of blood, sweat and tears.

     Perhaps because everyone in this community for 2 long weeks had shared the anxiety that has been borne by Louis' parents and other relatives, the content of that Navy department telegram spread like softly falling snow over the entire community, and sobered the countenance of every soul.

     All Atkinson shares the tears and likewise shares the pride of this father and mother in knowing that their son, a native son of Atkinson, served his country well, and that his life, if it be lost, will not have been lost in vain.

     Their only regret - and ours - is that his life, and that of thousands of others, had to be sacrificed without the chance of a fair fight because this nation at that time had not learned the lesson that many other free countries had already learned - that treachery has been one of the principal factors of the Axis gangsters' achievements. Atkinson, more than ever, will "Remember Pearl Harbor".

     Louis Tushla was very proud of his service in the Navy, and it is evident, by letters that he had written home, that he loved the mighty battle wagon on which he served. There is no doubt but that he gave a good account of himself before disaster overtook the ship in the Pearl Harbor battle.

     He was born on the Tushla farm a few miles northeast of Atkinson, and next February 13 will be his 26th birthday anniversary. He attended school in Atkinson and was graduated from Atkinson high school in 1934.

     Louis joined the Navy almost 2 years ago and for the past 14 months had served with the fleet in Hawaiian waters. He made rapid advancement in his ratings and was a fireman First class when the war started, December 7, and was expecting to receive another promotion soon.

     Just before he enlisted in the Navy, he was employed at the Dvorak Brothers farm southwest of Atkinson. What was perhaps his last letter home was written on December 1 to Edward Dvorak. It was received by Mr Dvorak Tuesday morning, Dec 23. In it Louis said,

     "Received your letter some time ago - guess it was when we were in Frisco..Boy was that a sailor's paradise. Our ship was the only one in, and we had the whole city to ourselves.we were there over 5 weeks. We came right back here (Hawaii) when we left and were in dry dock for 2 weeks here in Pearl Harbor. We had a collision one night while out to sea and therefore had to go in dry dock for repair work. It's against Navy rules to give any particulars about it, so will keep still. Nowdays any moves or happenings pertaining to the Navy are supposed to be kept a secret.

     If everything turns out all right, I'll probably be seeing you next spring or summer, but will keep my fingers crossed. We should be going to the Navy yard by then, and there should be a chance for a leave. Write and tell me all about yourself.. and tell the others hello for me. Now don't wait over two years to answer.

     Louis has 3 brothers, and 3 sisters. They are, Dr Francis M of Auburn, Mrs Arthur Regal of Atkinson, Harold who is training in a U S Army flying school in California, Mrs Helen Binder of Los Angeles, Cal, Mrs Kathleen Deermer of Big Bear Lake, Calf, and Donald who is studying sheet metal work in a defense training school at Norfolk. Donald arrived home Wednesday evening to spend the Christmas holiday with his mother and father.

OBITUARY

     Gustav W Ullrich was born Oct 1,1869, in Clinton County, Iowa and died at Atkinson Jan 6.

     When 8 years old removed with parents to Crawford County, Iowa, where he resided until 6 years ago when he moved with his wife, Miss Katy Schafer whom, he married at the age of 20, and his family to Atkinson.

     Mr Ullrich has been prosperous and a year ago bought a farm about 3 miles east of here.

     The cause of death being a cancer, deceased was operated on at Omaha last Sept but kept losing rapidly and passed away quietly.

     He leaves a wife and 8 children, the youngest of which is a girl of 9 and the oldest a boy of 18.

     Mr Ullrich was a member of the M W A in good standing and carried $2000 insurance in that order.

     The funeral services were conducted by Rev Father Loecher and interment made in the Catholic Cemetery.

     Funeral services were held Sat, Feb 1,1997, at St Joseph Catholic Church at Atkinson, Nebr for DeWain Ulrich, 88, of Stuart,Nebr. Mr Ulrich died Jan 29 at Norfolk, Nebr.

     Interment was at St Joseph's Catholic Cemetery at Atkinson.

     Dewain Ulrich was born Sept 20,1908 at Atkinson to William and Louise (Bauman) Ulrich. On April 7,1931 , he married Valeria Mlinar at Atkinson.

     Surviving him are daughters, Lorraine Shald of Norfolk, Arlene (Bill) Martine of Kansas City, Mo; Maureen (Jack) Gill of Lincoln; sons; Richard (Ferne) Ulrich of LaVista, Nebr; Norman (Marie) Ulrich of Gretna and Glen (Rebecca) Ulrich of Stuart; 21 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren; one aunt, Mabelle Bauman of Atkinson.

JOHN VINZENZ

     John Vinzenz was born in Kunas, Bohemia, Jan 10,1849, and passed away at his home west of Atkinson on July 25,1922, at the age of 73 years, 6 months and 15 days. He was one of the early settlers of this section of Nebraska, coming here from Austria on April 14,1886, and settling 18 miles southwest of Atkinson, where he lived ntil about 12 years ago, when he bought and moved on the farm 8 miles west of Atkinson.

     He was married 46 years ago to Miss Agnes Schneider, and to this union were born 12 children, 5 of whom died in infancy and 1 son, Conrad, died of influenza in 1918. His wife and 6 children survive to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted husband and father. The children are Mrs Agnes Schmit, Mrs Hugh McAlur of Omaha, John, Mrs Conrad Kramer, Mrs Joseph Laible, Frank, 14 grandchildren, 4 sisters, 1 brother, besides a number of other relatives also survive him.

     Mr Vinzenz had been ailing about 2 years with bronchial affection which was the cause of his death.

     The funeral was held at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson,which church he was a faithful member, on July 28. The remains were laid to rest in St Joseph's Cemetery in the presence of a large assembly of relatives and friends.

MRS VROOMAN EXPIRES ON CHRISTMAS DAY

     Mrs Effie A Vrooman, 58, a lifelong resident of this community, died early Christmas Day, Dec 25, at the Atkinson Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for ten days.

     Mrs Vrooman was the widow of the late William C Vrooman, local rancher, who died in 1954. She had been in excellent health until the 4th of last August, when she underwent surgery at the hospital here. Since then, she had been hospitalized from time to time.

     Funeral services were conducted Thur morning at St Joseph's Catholic Church Burial was in St Joseph's Cemetery.

     Effie A Jones, dau of the late John F and Pauline Pacha Jones, was born Oct 15,1900, in Atkinson. She was a graduate of St Joseph's High School and attended Chadron State Teacher's College. She taught school in rural districts in this community and one term at Wood Lake.

     She was married to William C Vrooman Jan 12,1926 at St Joseph's Church in Atkinson. For the first three years of their married life, they lived on a farm 9 miles north of Atkinson. In 1929, they moved to the ranch 26 miles southwest of Atkinson.

     Her husband died suddenly of a heart attack Sept 20,1954. She continued to reside on the ranch, which is operated by her son, Harold.

     Mrs Vrooman was a member of St Joseph's Altar Society. Until last Aug, she was in excellent health and was an active woman who enjoyed actual participation in the operation of the Vrooman ranch.

     She is survived by one son, Harold, who operates the home ranch; four grandchildren, Thomas, Mary,James, and Kay; one sister, Mrs Rudolph (Louella) Poessnecker of Atkinson; and numerous other relatives.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one granddaughter, Frances in 1953.

HEART ATTACK FATAL TO WM VROOMAN

     William C Vrooman, 54 year old rancher, died suddenly when he suffered a heart attack Monday morning, Sept 20 at his ranch 27 miles southwest of Atkinson. He had been a resident of this community most of his life.

     Mr Vrooman and his son, Harold, who resides on the home ranch and helps operate the place, went to a pasture about four miles south of the Vrooman home Mon morning to sort cattle. It was there that Mr Vrooman suffered the heart attack. He died instantly.

     Although not ill recently, the late Mr Vrooman had not been completely well since he was hospitalized with a serious heart attack two years ago last April.

     Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson. Burial was in St Joseph's Cemetery.

     Mr Vrooman was a son of Adelbert and Martha Rodgers Vrooman. He was born Feb 27,1900, near Randolph, Nebr. His mother died when he was 11 years old, and he spent three years of his youth with the Tim O'Connell family in this community and 9 years at the ranch home of Mr and Mrs Wm Kretchman south of Atkinson.

     He was married to Miss Effie Jones of Atkinson at St Joseph's Catholic Church on Jan 12,1926. For the first 3 years of their married life they lived 9 miles north of Atkinson, then moved to their present home on the ranch 27 miles southwest of here.

     Mr Vrooman is survived by his wife, Effie; son, Robert Harold, who helps operate the ranch; two grandchildren, Thomas Harold Vrooman, age 3 ½ and Mary Clare Vrooman, 2 years; two sisters, Mrs Dorothy Barrett of Atkinson and Mrs Blanche Pick of Wynot; two nephews and one niece.

IRENE BABCOCK LOSES FIGHT AGAINST DEATH
SADNESS SHROUDS COMMUNITY AS LIFE OF YOUNG MOTHER PASSES OUT; FUNERAL SAT MORNING

     A shadow of sadness crept over this community Wed afternoon when it was learned that Mrs Clyde Babcock, young mother of a family of 3 little children, was fast losing her fight for life in the Atkinson hospital where four weeks ago she underwent an emergency operation for ruptured appendix. She passed away yesterday morning at 5 o'clock.

     Following her operation a few weeks ago, Mrs Babcock made a gallant struggle against death, and won. For several days she showed much improvement and the latter part of last week although not out of danger, it was thought that surely she would recover. Tue afternoon the turning point came quite suddenly and before many hours passed, all hope for her recovery was given up.

     Funeral services will be held Sat morning at 10 o'clock at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson, conducted by the Rev Father John Pieper,pastor.

     Helen Irene Collamer was born in Norfolk, Nebr July 15,1899 and at the time of her death was 30 years of age. She moved to Atkinson with her parents in 1911 and the following year her father died.

     At Norfolk she was a pupil in the public school and after coming to Atkinson she continued her school work at St Joseph's hall. On Feb 19,1916 she became the bride of Clyde Babcock of this city, son of Mr and Mrs Ed Babcock, who now live at Crookston, Nebr. To them were born 3 children, Helen, age 12; Willard, age 10, and Annie Elaine, age 8, who with their father survive her.

     Besides her husband and children , those who mourn her death are her mother, Mrs Agnes Collamer of Atkinson; a sister, Miss Bernice Collamer of Atkinson; a brother, Myron of Batesland, SD; her aged grandfather, Pat Barrett of Atkinson, and many other relatives and friends.

DIES FOLLOWING SURGICAL OPERATION

     John J Flannery who, until a few months ago, was a resident in the vicinity of Atkinson, died in St Joseph's hospital in Albuquerque, NM, last Sat afternoon, Aug 23rd, following an operation for relief from an ailment of the gall Lladder.

     Mr Flannery disposed of his property interests here and with his family moved to Albuquerque, seeking relief in that climate from what seemed to be most threatening in his case- tuberculosis of the lungs. He invested in a home and other city property there. A short time ago he made a visit to Atkinson and left here Aug 11th for his home.

     The remains were brought to Atkinson for interment reaching here Tue evening and accompanied by Mrs Flannery. Hequiem mass was observed in St Joseph's Church Wed morning and interment made in the Atkinson Cem.

     The deceased was a native of Holt County, born at Stuart in the year 1878.

     On the 29th of March, 1910, he was married to Miss Katherine Jennings of Atkinson. To them were born four children, two sons and two daughters, and who survive him. He is also survived by two brothers, Thomas of Scotts Bluff and Michael of Stuart; and three sisters, Mrs Henry Thompson and Mrs James Leary of Omaha and Mrs Margaret McCarvel, all of whom, with the exception of Thomas, were present at the funeral, Wed, Aug 27th.
