Chapman, Washington Irving
Dec 17,1920 Atkinson Graphic

WASHINGTON IRVING CHAPMAN

W I Chapman, active in the business affairs of Atkinson for the past 20 years, passed away at his home in the city, about 10 o’clock pm Thursday, Dec 9th.

Wash, as he was familiarly known by everyone, was taken with an attack of influenza about the first of Oct. At that time he was in Wyoming on business, and where, with a company of others, he had oil interests in the Osage oil fields. For 3 weeks during which time his ailment was gradually breaking reserve forces, he went about his business thinking to wear it away. Oct 22nd, he came home a very sick man. Heart complications had developed and at all times since, during the 8 weeks to follow, life battled against overwhelming odds.

Washington Irving Chapman was born at LaMoille, Ill, on May 28,1870. His childhood years were spent in his native state. Moving with his parents to Buffalo Gap, SD in 1886. After pioneering for years in this part of the west, in the days of beginnings, the days that have so rapidly passed because of the sturdy spirit of men who would subdue, he came later to Atkinson.

Deceased was one of the men who so ably assisted in the laying of foundations for advancement and that his efforts were not futile is abundantly proven by the commercial and agricultural strength of his home community.

The West will ever remain indebted to men, such as he who battled so heroically against so many odds with little or no preparations to make the task easier.

In the spirit of a man "Who will" Mr Chapman came to Holt County in 1893, a critical period in Nebraska’s history as all old settlers will readily recall, and with indomitable courage he began a program of farming and ranching which grew as the years passed, in connection with his farming interests Mr Chapman conducted an extensive real estate business and it was while away from home in the interest of this branch of his affairs that he was taken ill and after a courageous battle of 7 weeks he passed away in a peaceful sleep Thursday night, Dec 9,1920.

He was a kind husband, a loving father and a friend to his fellowman giving full devotion to the interests of his life.

In the early days of his youth he was baptized and became a member of the Methodist Church.

W I Chapman and Miss Effie M Blackmer were united in marriage Aug 5,1895. To them were born one daughter and 7 sons; Lilith Chapman, Harold, Leland, Wilbur, James, Douglas, George and Paul. Besides his wife and children: he leaves to mourn his death his aged mother, Mrs Mabel K Wright and one sister, Mrs Charles Prior of Sheffield, Ill, 3 brothers, Ellis of Edgemont, SD; Joseph and Ernest of Sheffield, Ill.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with song service and sermon at the Methodist Episcopal church and attended by an over flowing house in testimony of the esteem in which deceased was held. Pallbearers were Peter W Duffy, Paul T Schultz, John R Jarvis, Charles Withers, John Miskimins and John O Hubbell. The remains were laid at rest in Woodlawn Cem.

MRS JASPER CORBIT DIES AT AGE 73

Mrs Jasper Corbit passed away at her home in Atkinson, Wednesday, aged 73 years.

Mr and Mrs Corbit and family came to Atkinson in1906 and settled on a farm, moving to town in 1919.

Three years ago this aged couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

The funeral will be held this afternoon at Methodist Episcopal Church. Interment made in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mary E, the daugther of Giles and Catherine Swan, was born in Cook Co, Illinois, Nov 14,1853. At an early age she moved with her parents to Story Co, Iowa. She was the oldest child of a family of 9 children. Her father was called to the colors and fought in the Civil War.

The family moved to Mitchell Co, Kan in 1873, where the father homesteaded. Here the family endured the hardships of pioneering, also the joys that came through achievement as they fought against drouth, grasshoppers and privation.

She was married March 11,1874 to Jasper Corbit, a young homesteader of that community, and they began housekeeping at once in the log cabin on the claim. A short time after their marriage both husband and wife were converted in a schoolhouse meeting and began living a consecrated Christian Life, and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. The young couple lived in Kansas for about six years, then moved to Fremont Co, Iowa, locating near Riverton, where they resided eight years. In 1891 they moved to College Springs, Iowa, living there six years. In1897 they moved to a farm near Farragut, Iowa, where they lived until 1906. The family moved that year to a farm in Holt County, Nebr, again pioneering.

In 1919 the farm was sold and Mr and Mrs Corbit moved to Atkinson, purchasing the Wixson place which has been the family home for 7 years.

8 children: came to bless the home. All but 2 are living. Edith and Effie dying in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs H E Benson of McLean, Nebr. Mrs S E Kelley of Wood Lake, Mrs Chas G Moulton of West Point, E W Corbit of Lemmon, SD; W N Corbit of Farragut, Iowa; E L Corbit of Dixon, Nebr. These, with the husband were preseent during the closing hours of her life and for the funeral.

Mrs Corbit was always active in church and Sunday School work. Their's was a christian home and countless numbers of ministers and Christian workers knew that the Corbit hoem was always their home. For many years she was a faithful worker in the Women's Christian Temperance union, and lived the life of purity emblematic of the white ribbon which she wore.

Mrs Corbit had a very sunny disposition, an inexhaustible suppy of humor and an uncompaining spirit. Through the last days of her life she was patient even under pain and distress.

The end came very peacefully, without a struggle Nov 3. Had she lived another week she would have been 73 years old.
