Here she was married on Oct 25,1869 to Stewart Beck. Following her marriage she made her home at Tingley and at Lake City, Iowa, coming from the latter place in 1898 to Atkinson where she has since resided first on a farm a few miles out and after her husband's death which occurred Dec 25,1910, in her property in North Atkinson.

     Mrs Beck was the mother of 12 children, 8 of whom survive her. They are Charles and A Beck of Auburn, Iowa, Steel of Sioux City, Roy of Des Moines, Mrs James Morgan, Dave, James and Harold of Atkinson. One child died in infancy, a grown son in the first years of their residence here and a son and daughter both within the past three years.

     The deceased was a life long church member uniting with the Presbyterian church here. She was always active in church and Sabbath School work and in every other movement for the betterment of the community.

     She was for many years connected with the work of the WCTU and that of Woman Suffrage, being district organizer and county officer. Her interest in these two causes was unfailing and it is a satisfaction to her friends that she lived to see the culmination of her hopes and efforts realized in both. She was a woman having many sterling traits of character and her influence will long be felt in the community where she spent so many of the active years of her life. During the past three years she has been in failing health and the frequent illnesses induced by heart trouble and complications resulted in her death Friday, Dec 9,1921 at her home to which she had been confined but a few days.

     Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Dec 11. The large assemblage attested to the high esteem in which Mrs Beck was held. All of her children were able to be present except one son, Charles who had visited his mother a short time ago. The remains were interred in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Donnelly, William

SUICIDE
W J DONNELLY BECOMES DESPONDENT AND TAKES HIS OWN LIFE

     Wednesday morning Atkinson citizens were shocked to learn that between three and four that morning Wm Donnelly had committed suicide by shooting himself through the head, at his home. The only reason that can be ascribed for the act is that he was discouraged and out of a job at time. He had one vice which he had striven manfully to overcome and would have succeeded in doing so had he beenlet alone. There are no words sufficient to express the loathing which all must feel for the degenerate vampires who enticed him into breaking his resolution and bringing him finally to his death merely that they might share his libations while he lived. They are scarce one degree better than murderers, and at this moment poor Will Donnelly stands in better favor with his Maker than do they. When in a normal condition the deceased was one of the finest young men in the community, industrious, honest and generous to a fault. To his mother and sisters who are left to mourn, the entire citizenship of Atkinson extends its heartfelt sympathy in the loss of a son and brother who was ever kind and considerate in the home circle, and whose sudden demise falls with crushing force on the loved ones.

     The funeral occurred from the Presbyterian Church Thursday conducted by Rev Hyden.

     William John Donnelly was born in Port Huron, Mich, Sept 18,1873. In March 1883 he came with his parents to Atkinson, residing on their farm one mile southwest of town. In 1886 the family moved to Rapid City, SD where he embarked in the barber business continuing there until 1894, when he moved to Atkinson, engaging in the same business until his death which occurred Aug 27,1902.

Just to be helpful with willing feet;
Just to be cherry when things go wrong,
Just to drive sadness away with a song;
Whether the hour is dark or bright,

Just to let love be our daily key-

     He moved to Atkinson with his parents in the spring of 1911.

     Through his long illness of six months, he was a patient sufferer, uttering not one word of complaint. Everyone who knew him loved him.

     He leaves to mourn his departure, his parents, one sister, three brothers, and a large number of relatives and friends.

He is not dead, he is just away;
With a cherry smile and a wave of the hand
He has entered into the unknown land,
Leaving us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be since he lingers there.
And you, O you, who the deepest yearn
For the old time step and the glad return
Think of him fareing on as dear
In the love of there as the love of here

KILLED
CHRISTIAN GATHJE FALLS FROM HAY STACK AND IMPALES HIMSELF ON HIS PITCHFORK

     Christian Gathje a well known farmer living eight miles south of Aktinson was the victim about four o'clock Tuesday of a most unusual and shocking accident resulting in his death. Mr Gathje was at work in his field stacking hay at the time of the accident and was just finishing a stack using an automatic stacker. His son who was running the machine had put on the usual load and started his team. To avoid the load, Mr Gathje stepped to the outside of the stack, holding his fork with the prongs in the air. Just how the accident occured will never be known. His son heard a startled cry and running to the opposite side of the stack found his father lying on the ground with the blood gushing from a gaping wound in his chest, caused by the tines of the fork. He was already beyond the power of speech. The dying man was carried to his home and Dr Douglas was hurriedly summoned, but when reached by the doctor, he had been dead nearly an hour. Dr Douglas tells us that beyond doubt death followed the accident in a very few minutes. The fork penetrated the left side of the chest causing a lacerated wound of large extent and involved the large artery which furnishes the blood supply for the head. The laceration of this artery caused prfuse internal hermorrhage and death was a question only of moments.

     Mr Gathje leaves a large family to mourn his death.

Havens, Ansel D
Aug 22,1901 Atkinson Plain Dealer

     Carried home by the angels in his bright and beautiful babyhood, Ansel D, son of Homer and Louisa Havens.

Off that little snowy casket
As it passes by my door,
Silently it seems to whisper
Tales of sorrow o'er and o'er.
Tells me how a weeping mother
Sits beside a cradle bed;
Silent not it is and empty
Robbed of baby's golden head.
Tells me too of baby's prattle,
Hushed by death's cold cruel hand;
Closed the eyes once blue and laughing,
Baby's in a happy land.
Little casket, little casket,
Oh what woe you bring today,
For a mother's heart is bleeding
O'er that snowy bit of clay.
Weep not, mother, father, for your darling
Jesus holds him in His arms;
Closely to His breast he folds him,
Safe from all the world's alarms.

JOHN HURLEY, AGED GOLD MINER, DEAD
MINER'S CONSUMPTION FATAL AFTER 2 YEAR ILLNESS; WAS UNMARRIED

     John W Hurley, 67, died at his home in Atkinson Thursday following a two year illness that kept him bedfast most of the time. He was a victim of miner's consumption, a disease he contracted from long years of work underground in the gold mines of the western part of the US. He was not a married man.

     Mr Hurley came to Atkinson in 1910 and has since made his home here. For a number of years he was a janitor at St Joseph's Catholic Church and school in Atkinson and caretaker of St Joseph's Cemetery. This work he had to stop when he became ill two years ago. He was born in Blackwood, Wales, in 1862, the son of Timothy and Hannora Hurley, and came to the US with his aprents when he was ten years old. They settled in Wilkes-Barre, Penn.

     When 18 years old, Mr Hurley set out for the west to work in the gold fields. For 30 years he was a gold miner, roving from place to place and in mining towns all over the west he became well known as an expert with explosives and blasting in underground mining shafts. His parents moved to Atkinson in 1909 and for a time lived on a farm near here. John came here the following year. Both his parents are dead.

     Mr Hurley is survived by one sister, Julia, a school teacher in Cleveland, Ohio and two brothers, Joseph of Sioux City and WIlliam of Wilkes Barre, Penn. Joseph arrived here Thursday and the others are unable to come for the funeral which will be held Saturday at St Joseph's Catholic Church. Burial will be made in St Joseph's Cemetery.

PIONEER SETTLER DEAD

     Samuel Jahns, an old Holt County homesteader residing four miles east of Atkinson, died suddenly at his home shortly after noon Monday the 22nd inst.

     Mr Jahns who was still active at farm duties was driving with a hay rack to the field to resume the afternoon's work. A little later his team was seen to be moving in a circle, indicating that something was wrong and when reached he was underneath the wagon dead. It was first supposed that he was killed by being run over by the wagon, but the circumstances would indicate that more likely he had a stroke which combined with the fall from the wagon caused his death.

     Deceased was an old settler here, coming to Holt County in 1884 and homesteading the land upon which he resided and developed into a typically progressive farm home of 480 acres.

     Samuel Jahns was born in Iowa county, Wis, Sept 7,1857; died July 22,1918, aged 60 years 10 months and 15 days.

     At the age of 25 years he moved to Crawford County, Iowa, where he lived one year, moving to Holt County in the spring of 1884.

     Sept 1,1885 he was united in marriage with Rose E Walter at West Side, Iowa, and who survives him together with an adopted son, Roy Jahns, and one sister, Mrs Jane Skafe of Covington, Wis, who was summoned and was present at the funeral services.

     In his death his community loses a just and upright neighbor and a helpful man and in his home is the vacant chair of the one who builded, and fostered with kindly and indulgent care its inmates.

     The funeral services took place at the Methodist Episcopal church in Atkinson by the pastor, Rev O E Richardson and interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

EARLY ATKINSON HOMESTEADER IS TAKEN BY DEATH
CALL REACHES ED JENNINGS WHO SETTLED HERE 50 YEARS AGO
CAME BEFORE RAILROAD
LIVED IN SOD HOUSE; HELPED LAY NORTH WESTERN TRACKS THROUGH ATKINSON

     Edward Jennings, anothe rof Holt County's early homesteaders and sod house dwellers, passed away Monday at Atkinson, where he had been since he fell and fractured his hip 4 weeks ago. He was almost 89 years of age, and was the last of the Jennings family. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs Kate Flannery.

     49 years ago, before the railroad reached as far as Atkinson, Mr Jennings came to the US from his home in Ireland, directly to Holt County where he took a homestead and tree claim, which to the day of his death he owned. He came alone, leaving this family across the water until he could have enough money to send for them. This he did after four years of pioneering in the sandhills. Besides taking care of his farm he worked on the railroad and when the tracks were laid through Atkinson he was a member of the construction crew.

     Mr Jennings was born in County Mayo, Ireland, in the year 1841. In 1873 he was married to Hannorah Diviny. Four children were born to them. Thomas and Kate in Ireland, a daughter in England and a son in Holt County who both died in infancy. Mr Jennings came to Holt County in 1880 and homesteaded the place about three miles south of Atkinson. This farm was owned by him at the time of his death. It is occupied by Ed Slaymaker.

     Four years after he came west he sent money to Ireland so his family could join him. In those early days they lived on the claim in a sod house. Mrs Jennings died in 1890 and the eldest son, Thomas passed away April 12,1902. Mr Jennings stayed on the farm a few years after his son's death, but moved to town in 1905 where he since resided.

     Two years ago, the aged pioneer suffered a stroke and since that time his health gradually failed. Whiile out walking about a month ao, he fell and fractured his hip. He was taken to the hospital immediately but the suffering weakened him and his condition grew rapidly worse. His daughter Mrs Flannery, has made her home with him and cared for him the past five years. This spring she went to Canyon City, Colo for a short time to look after some property there that she owns. While she was away Mr Jennings fell and was injured. She came home immediately and was here at the time of his death.

     Besides his daughter Mr Jennings is survived by four grandchildren, Thomas, John, Loretta and Catherine Flannery who live at home with their mother. Funeral services were conducted at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Atkinson Thursday by the Rev Fr John Pieper. Burial was made in St Joseph's Cemetery.

May 13,1921 Atkinson Graphic

     The body of Mark V Murphy, who came to his death in some manner unknown on the Murphy ranch Winner, SD, last week, was brought to Atkinson Monday and interment made in the family burial plot, beside the graves of his parents, a sister and brother.

     The following item from Winner in the Norfolk Daily News of May 11 is given as the probably manner of his taking off.

     Thought to have been attacked and injured by an enraged bull, Mark Murphy, a prosperous ranchman living 6 miles east of Winner, was found unconscious in a pasture on his place and later died in the Winner hospital without regainign consciousness.

     Mr Murphy went to the pastures Saturday to look over the stock and repair fences, when he did not return at noon his two sisters became worried and their fears were increased when the riderless horse returned to the house. The two women searched for their brother until late at night and then summoned aid from the neighbors who searched all night for the missing man. Early Sunday they found Mr Murphy lying in a field face downward and unconscouus. The ground about was trodden by cattle.

     It is believed that Mr Murphy had dismounted to repair a fence and while doing so was attacked by a young bull which was in the pasture. It is thought that Mr Murphy had lain where he was felled by the enraged animal all night Saturday and Saturday afternoon.

     No bones were found broken but one arm was badly swollen and a serious bruise was noticed in the pit of the stomach.

     Deceased is survived by two brothers, Leonard and Sylvester and two sisters Mary and Grace. The sisters reside on the ranch in Dakota where the accident occurred.

     The Murphy family were old Holt County residents near Atkinson until the opening of the Rosebud country some years ago.

INFECTION FATAL TO ATKINSON YOUNG MAN
M KENNETH SANDERS PASSED AWAY WEDNESDAY MORNING AFTER FIVE DAY ILLNESS

     Morris Kenneth Sanders, 23, adopted son of Mr and Mrs Ada M Sanders of this city, died Wednesday at Stuart hospital of sinus infection which developed rapidly from what was thought a small boil on the side of his nose, the infection speading upward. The young man drove to Stuart himself last Friday to consult a doctor. His condition rapidly grew worst and Sunday a special nurse Miss Kate Boel of Norfolk, was called to attend him.

     Funeral services were held at the Sanders home in Atkinson Thursday, Rev S G Rasmusson of the Methodist Church and Rev W A Wilson of Stuart, who was the Methodist minister at Amelia years ago when Mrs Sanders and Kenneth lived there. In 1922 they moved back to University Place where Kenneth took his 7th and 8th grade work. While in school there he played trombone in the school band. In 1924 they moved back to Atkinson and he attended high school here. Before he finished school he and his mother went to California where they lived for a time at Fresno and Los Angeles with Mrs Sanders' brother-in-law, Rev J M Richmond. They came back from California a year ago last March and have since lived here.

     Kenneth was a diligent Bible student. Of his own accord, at the age of 12 years he joined the Methodist church while living in Cal. EARLY ATKINSON RESIDENT PASSED AWAY WEDNESDAY
DEATH COMES TO MRS C L STURDEVANT AFTER LONG ILLNESS
FUNERAL TODAY AT 2:30
ALMOST HALF CENTURY OF LIFE WAS DEVOTED TO CHURCH ACTIVITIES IN THIS COMMUNITY

     Funeral services are to be held at the Presbyterian church in Atkinson this afternoon for Mrs C L Sturdevant, one of this city's early residents, who passed away at her home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock after a gradual faillng in the past year from tuberculosis (that's the way the paper had it)

     A number of years ago Mrs Sturdevant became afflicted with diabetes and under the care of her husband, Dr C L Sturdevant, and sister Miss Minnie Munger, she had passed all danger from the disease, when she took sick with influenza. In her already weakened condition the illness developed into tubercular trouble and for many weeks it was known that life could not long endure, although she retained consciousness almost to the end.

     For almost half a century Hester Ann Sturdevant had been a leader among the women folks of this community, especially active in the work of the Presbyterian church of which she had been a member since she first came to Atkinson in 1886, the wife of this community's pioneer country doctor. She was born at Ottawa, Ill, Oct 9,1855 and at her death was 73 years 9 months of age.

     When 20 years old she moved to Marseilles, Ill and in that city on the 27 of Oct 1886 she became the bride of Dr C L Sturdevant, coming to Atkinson with him to establish the home which, in the many years of her life here, has been the pleasant, hospitable gathering place of their circle of friends.

     Mrs Sturdevant is survived by her husband and one son, Charles M Sturdevant of Lincoln; a grandson, Charles L Sturdevant of Lincoln; two sisters, Mrs Nellie A Fry of Medford, Mass and Miss Minnie Munger of Aktinson, and a brother, William A Munger of Grand Haven, Mich. Mrs Fry and Mr Munger are unable to be here for the funeral.

     Mrs Sturdevant's devotion to the church work which she loved began in her teens when she united with the Congregational church in Ottawa, Ill, the town of her birth. When she came to Atkinson she joined the Presbyterian Church and until her health prevented in late years, she had worked faithfully and efficiently in every church enterprise. From girlhood in her old home town to the last years of her life, she sang in the church choirs. She possessed a beautiful voice and much expression in song. Other branches of the church that will especially miss her work are the Missionary Society and the Ladies Auxiliary.

     Among expressions of tribute to her by many of her friends, are heard statements attesting to her capability, her even temper, her qualities as a wondeful home maker, her quiet and kind nature coupled with a determination to accomplish worthwhile things in life, her most excellent judgemnet, and counsel to those who sought her for advice, her kind consideration of the sick and her own patience and uncomplaining during her long illness.
