Geroge Cowton, Grand Island Insurance Executive, 96, Dies (Monday)
Pioneering Grand Island Insurance Agent Cowton Dies (Tuesday)

Grand Island (AP)---George Cowton who emigrated from England in 1904 and founded one of central Nebraska's most successful insurance business in 1910, has died. Cowton died Saturday at age 96. According to his grandson Charles G. Kahroff of Grand Island, despite a myniad of businesses insurance was Cowton's main interest. "He saw the first cars come to Grand Island," Kanrfoff said. "He insured the second one." In 1925, Cowton set a world record for selling 122 life insurance policies in a single day, he said. In addition to operating the George Cowton Insurance Co. later Cowton, Kahrhoff, Beachler, Inc., he was clerk of the U.S. District Court in Grand Island for 30 years. He also ran a travel bureau and real estate agency. Kahrhoff said, and was a member of many civic and philantrophic organizations.

Milton Clark

MILTON CLARK RITES WILL BE HELD TUESDAY
Death, Following Illness of Several Months, Occurs Saturday Night

Milton Clark, employed by the Union Pacific and a resident here since his removal from Wood River in 1925, died at 9:45 o'clock Saturday night at his home, 1012 South Pine street. He had been ill for several months. Born at Wood River, May 23, 1903, he was 36 years of age. He attended the public schools and grew to manhood at Wood River. He married Miss Eva LINNEMAN here Aug. 9, 1930. Surviving are his wife, one sister, Mrs. H. M. JOHNSON, and four brothers, Paul C., Clarence L., and George W., all of Grand Island, and Robert L., Cheyenne, Wyo. Christian Science services will be held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Geddes funeral home, with J. A. Rowlison in charge. Friends may view the body at the residence, 1012 South Pine St. Monday evening, from 7 to 9 o'clock. Burial will be in the Grand Island cemetery.

Arthur Cone

Arthur "A.D." Cone, 73, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center following complications after surgery. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice. Mr. Cone was born on July 13, 1924, at Berwyn to Arthur and Ethel (Marsh) Cone. He moved to Grand Island at age 3, was educated here and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1943. He married Alvera Wagner in 1951, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island, where he worked for Chicago Lumber Co. for 19 years and later for Greenline Farm Equipment until retiring in 1987. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Platt-Duetsche Society, Ashlar Lodge 33 A.F. & A.M. and Platte Valley Antique Association. He was a volunteer and worked with the agriculture displays at Stuhr Museum. He enjoyed wood carving, fishing, restoring antiques and was an avid sportsman. Survivors include his wife; two sons, of Phillips and of Kersey, Colo.; one daughter, of Grand Island; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Arvine Cone; and one sister, Marie Williams.

Gertrude Crawford

DONIPHAN - Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude Crawford of Doniphan were held Saturday afternoon from the First Methodist Church of Doniphan with the Rev. Duane Sinn officiating. Mr. and Mrs. William Haskins sang, accompanied by Mrs. Helen Cunningham who also played the funeral prelude and recessional. Members of the Doniphan OES 228 attended the services in a group. Pallbearers were Ivan Yates, Clayton Adams, E. G. Augustin, August Graf, Clayton Robb and Claude Button. Mrs. Crawford, a lifelong resident of the Doniphan community, died Thursday at the family home. Relatives attending services from out of the city were Mr. Max Crawford, Burbank, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Rex Crawford and son David, Grand Island; Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Reynolds, Benkleman; Mrs. Virginia Wiles, Mrs. Arlene Hansen, Mr. and Mrs. Arlon Krueger, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Quandt, Grand Island.

Lyman Campbell

Mr. Lyman Campbell, who passed away yesterday morning about 10:30 o'clock at his home, 821 West Eighth street, was born in Dekalb Co., Illinois on Jan. 9, 1855, and in 1874 moved with his parents to Hamilton County, Nebraska. In 1885 he was united in marriage to Miss Lottie Hahn, the couple later making this city their home. This union was blessed with eight children, four sons and four daughters, Clyde, Fred, Clarence, Ray, Stella, Florence, and Erma, one daughter Edna, having preceded him in death only a few weeks ago. Besides his heartbroken family he leaves to mourn his loss two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Sam Dietz of this city, Mrs. William Doan, of Glenwood, Iowa and Mr. W. L. Campbell of this city. A particularly pathetic incident of this case is the death of his daughter, Miss Edna. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clockfrom the home and at 2:30 from the Christian church. Rev. Groom officiating, interment will be made in the Grand Island cemetery.

Lottie Campbell

DEATH TAKES MRS.LOTTIE CAMPBELL

Stroke of Paralysis Fatal To Mother of Chief of City Fire Department. Mrs. Charlotte Sophia Campbell, a long time resident of Grand Island and Central Nebraska, died in a local hospital today at the age of 80. Her death followed a stroke which she suffered yesterday. Formerly Miss Lottie Hahn, Mrs. Campbell was born in Ottawa, Ill. Mar. 8, 1862, and grew to womanhood in that city. She moved to Nebraska and was married May 30, 1886, at Aurora to Lyman Marvin Campbell. Mr. Campbell died in 1916. Mrs. Campbell had lived in Grand Island 43 years. Mrs. Campbell was a faithful member of the Christian church in Grand Island, and was a member of Andrew chapter No. 41, Order of Eastern Star; Truth Rebekah lodge No. 132 and the Woman's Relief Corps. Surviving are seven children, Mrs Walter (Stella) Speck, Miss Florence Campbell, Mr. Clyde Campbell, Mr. Clarence M. Campbell, Mr. Ray Campbell, Mrs. Clifford (Irma) Riggs, Mr. Fred Campbell, all residents of Grand Island.

Genevieve Conley

Genevieve E. Conley, 80, of Grand Island died Friday, March 27, 1998, at Lakeview Nursing and Rehab Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church. The Rev. Michael Helwig will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice. Mrs. Conley was born on June 27, 1917, in Jackson Township in rural Hall County to Louis and Mary (Bosler) Curry. She moved to Grand Island at an early age and was educated at Jefferson Elementary, Walnut Junior High and Grand Island Senior High. She married Leslie R. Conley on Oct. 29, 1937, at Lincoln. The couple lived in Grand Island, where she worked at the Palmer Hotel, the Yancey Hotel and as a seamstress. She later worked as a cook at Parkside Nursing Care Center and Baumann Nursing Home. Mr. Conley died in February 1977. Mrs. Conley retired in 1978. Mrs. Conley was a member of Christ Lutheran Church all of her life. She taught Sunday school for more than 20 years. She enjoyed reading, sewing and dancing. Survivors include one son, Gene Conley of Grand Island; one daughter, Monica Isenberg of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; one stepbrother, Marvin Muchow of Grand Island; one sister, Viola Griffins of Grand Island; and two stepsisters, Mildred Sheffield of Aurora and Berniece Nabor of Waco. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson and two sisters.

Milford Collins

CAIRO ‹ Milford Bernard Collins, 72, of Cairo, formerly of Fullerton, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion Post of Fullerton. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mr. Collins was born on Dec. 21, 1925, at Fullerton to Bernard and Mary (Swarty) Collins. He grew up in Fullerton and joined the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served during World War II on the USS PC 795. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946. He then worked for a sand and gravel company before he started farming in 1951. He married Dorothy Keller on Dec. 4, 1948, and farmed until he moved to Grand Island in 1963. He worked for Berkley Pump, Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and Heinzman Engineering in Grand Island before retiring. Survivors include one daughter, Donna Wagoner of Franklin; one son, David E. Collins of Grand Island; two grandsons; two brothers, Donald Collins of Fullerton and Richard Collins of Marquette; and two sisters, Dorothy McClure of Phoenix and Mildred Lewis of Fullerton. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Kay; and two brothers.

Marian Clinch

Marian E. Clinch, 74, of Grand Island died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at the St. Francis Skilled Care in Grand Island. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Martin Egging will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or the donor's choice. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Williams of Grand Island and Robert Williams of Belle Plaine, Kan.; three daughters, Carol Owens of Seattle, Barbara Harrod of Wichita, Kan., and Theresa Smith of Edgerton, Kan.; three sisters, Margaret Kessler of Wichita, Gladys Berry of Bridgeport and Jessie Wilson of St. Edward; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Otto "Pete" Williams.

Delma Craven

Delma R. Craven, 79, of Lakeview Health and Rehab Center died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Eric Ford will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Home Health Care. Mrs. Craven was born on Feb. 25, 1919, at Chester to Benjamin and Olive (Vance) Moxham. She grew up and was educated in Belleville, Kan. She moved to Grand Island in the fall of 1936. She married Alvey B. Craven on Nov. 21, 1936, at Columbus. They lived in Grand Island through most of their marriage. Mr. Craven died on Oct. 9, 1991. Mrs. Craven was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She enjoyed camping and boating. Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Hurst of Topeka, Kan.; and one granddaughter. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one granddaughter and five brothers and sisters.

Emilie Christensen

Emilie Jeanette Christensen, 54, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association. She was born on Dec. 26, 1943, at Grand Island to Edwin and Lyda (Gleason) Christensen. She grew up and was educated in Grand Island Public Schools and graduated from Senior High in 1963. She lived in Grand Island all of her life. She worked for Model Laundry and Delicious Foods. She attended Trinity United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crafts, watching sports on TV and her dog. Survivors include her mother, of Grand Island; a brother, Larry Christensen of Grand Island; and five sisters, Jean Koch, Evelyn Riblett, Jan Aldrich and Juliann Thornton, all of Grand Island, and Julia Lange of Gibbon. She was preceded in death by her father.

William Clayton

INDIANAPOLIS -- William G. Clayton, 81, of Indianapolis, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at Community Hospital North. Services were on Sunday at Leppert and Hurt Mortuary in Indianapolis. Burial will be in the Clayton family plot in Grand Island. Memorials are suggested to the Kiwanis Foundation and the Hook's Foundation. Mr. Clayton grew up in Grand Island. He attended Stanford University and the University of Nebraska, graduating with a pharmacy degree in 1939. He spent 20 years associated with his father and brother in the family-owned pharmacy, which was Central Nebraska's largest for many years. He married Vee Louise Marshall in Indianapolis. He became a non-foods merchandising manager for a regional supermarket chain in 1959 and later became executive vice president of Skagway Department Stores of Omaha and Grand Island. Registered to practice pharmacy in Nebraska and Indiana, he joined Hook's in 1964 as assistant merchandising director. He retired in 1974 from Hook's as vice president and director of merchandising. Mr. Clayton enjoyed traveling and photography. He was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, Down Kiwanis, Mural Shrine, Civil War Round Table, Camera Club and Indianapolis Sailing Club. He was a Literacy League tutor. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Courtney Upton of San Antonio and Nancy A. Bene of Austin, Texas; one son, William Todd Clayton of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one brother, John D. Clayton, Grand Island.

Margaret P. Cahalane

Wood River -- Margaret P. Cahalane, 96, of the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River died Thursday, Dec. 25, I997, at the center.Services will be at IO am. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Tom Ryan will otticiate. Burial will be in Westlavm Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm, with a rosary at 7 pm, Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the cathedral. St. Mary's Convent or the Crosier Monastery in Hastings. Mrs. Cahalane was born on Feb. I 1, I90] , in Wood River to Thomas W. and Mary Marie (Malloy) Caveny. She was educated at a rural school near Wood River. After her education, she did housekeeping. She man’ied Edward F. Cahalane on Nov. 19, 1925, in Grand Island. Mrs. Cahalane was the first licensed day-care provider in Grand Island. She worked at the Comhusker Army Ammunition Plant during World War II and continued in child care after the war. She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Mary's Altar Society. Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Roe and Mary Lou Randolph. both of Grand Island; 25 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; l7 great-great- grandchildren; and one sister, Rose Clark of Sterling, Colo. Her husband died in 1962. She also was preceded in death by three sons, Edward, Raymond and Jerry; three brothers, Jim Caveny, Francis Cavcny and Thomas Caveny; and two sisters, Nelle Bryson and Catherine Johnson.

Ronald Campbell

WOOD RIVER < Ronald Campbell. 68, of Wood River died Tuesday. Jan. 6, I998. at Lutheran Valley Hospital in Mesa. Ariz. Services will be at l 1 am. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wood River. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will ol‘ficiate. Burial will be in St. Mary‘s Catholic Cemetery in Wood River. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m.. with a 7 pm. rosary. Friday at the church. Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the church. Mr. Campbell was born on Dec. 20, 1929. in Grand Island to Claude R. and Phyllis (Dodd) Campbell. He grew up in Shelton and graduated from school there in I948. He entered the military in May I951, served I8 months in Korea and was discharged in April 1953. He married Evelyn Morosie on June 6, 1953. in Wood River. They lived in Wood River. He worked at New Holland in Grand Island for 23 years before retiring in I987. He was a member of the Wood River American Legion and St- Mary's Catholic Church and a past member of the Wood River school board. Survivors include his wife; three daughters. Deb (Mrs. Dave) Harders ofAlda. Rae Ann (Mrs. Ray) Saunders of Grand Island and Suzanne (Mrs. Bruce) Lans of Stamford; eight grandchildren; and two brothers Harold Campbell of Republican City and Gary Campbell of North Platte.
