ILLNESS FATAL TO HELEN ANDERSON
Miss Helen ANDERSON, 56, passed away Sunday at the home of her brother, Daniel C. ANDERSON, 1121 West Koenig street, terminating a long illness. She had been ill for some time at Chicago when she came to Grand Island approximately a year ago to reside with her brother. She was a very fine tailoress and was employed for many years by a men's tailoring house in Chicago.Miss Anderson was born in Denmark on Jan. 11, 1884. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Peter SCHNITZEN, York, and two brothers, Chris, Cedar Falls, Ia., and Daniel C., of Grand Island. A number of friends paid their respects last evening at the Sowl Grosshans chapel. The body will be taken late this afternoon to Cadar Falls, Ia., where funeral services will be held at the Harry Brown chapel at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in the Cedar Falls cemetery.

DEATH TAKES LENA LOCKETT ALBERTS
Mrs. Lena LOCKETT ALBERTS died at St. Luke's hospital at Pasadena, Cal., Apr. 9, following a lingering illness. Born in Grand Island Aug. 3, 1916, she was graduated from Senior high school with the class of 1934, and was a charter member of the "Lena Division 149" of the ladies auxillary of the Order of Railway Conductors which was named for her. On June 5, 1937, in this city, she was married to Paul J. ALBERTS and resided here until last September when she and her husband moved to Altadena, Cal. Funeral services were held Apr. 11 at the Wee Kirk o' the Heather chaple in Forest Lawn Memorial park at Glendale, Cal. Surviving are her husband, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. LOCKETT of Grand Island; two sisters, Mrs. Lera BOYD and Mrs. Don BARNES, both of Altadena, Cal., and one brother, Ira LOCKETT of Grand Island.

O. A. ABBOTT DIES
Four Times Mayor Of Grand Island
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (UP)---O. A. Abbott, 79, Four times mayor of Grand Island, died Saturday night. His father O. A. Abbott, Sr., was the first lieutenant governor of Nebraska after it achieved statehood. A sister, Grace, who died several years ago, was for many years head of the U.S. Chidrens Bureau and a freind and associate of Jane Adams. Survivors are a daughter, Charlotte, New York City social worker; a brother, Arthur G., a Grand Island attorney, and a sister, Edith of Grand Island who recently returned as dean of University of Chicago College of Sociology. Abbott's last term as mayor of Grand Island ended in 1941. He had been an attorney here for more than 50 years and for many years was also a court reporter. He served also as a member of the Grand Island Board of Education.

Mrs. Lulu B. Andrews, wife of Albert L. Andrews, died Sunday morning in the family home at 2015 North Park. She had been in ill health for two years and seriously ill for the last two months. Funeral services will be observed at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon in Gollaher Chapel at Tinity Methodist Church. Dr. Laurence Davis, pastor to the church, will officiate. Burial is to be in Grand Island Cemetery. Members of Andrew Chapter No. 41 of the Order of Eastern Star will attend the services in a group and will conduct the requien rites of the order. Friends may call from 7 to 9 o'clock Tuesday eveing at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Mrs. Andrews was a lifelong resident of Central Nebraska. She was born June 10, 1886, at Marquette to Mr. and Mrs. J. William Herbig. She and Carl M. Carlson were married Aug. 25, 1909, at Marquette. Soon after their marriage they moved to Dannebrog where Mr. Carlson was in the banking business. Later they lived at Phillips and at Doniphan. In 11935 they came to Grand Island when Mr. Carlson became an officer of the First National Bank. Mr. Carlson died here Oct. 2, 1938. Mr. and Mrs. Andrews were married Dec. 15, 1946, in Grand Island. They went to Aurora to make their home. For several years Mr. Andrews was the sheriff of Hamilton County. In 1953 Mr. and Mrs. Andrews came to Grand Island to make their home. Mrs. Andrews was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. She was affiliated with Andrew Chapter No. 41 of the Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband, three children,m Mrs. Robert Starr Spangenberg and Wayne Carlson, both of Grand Island, and Aubrey Carlson of Mount Pleasant, Mich.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Martin Nelson, Los Angeles, Calif., six-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Besides her first husband, Mr. Carlson, and her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and seven brothers. The family suggests memorials to the Cancer Fund.

DONIPHAN ‹ Steven Antle, 42, of Doniphan died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Doniphan United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bill Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar View Cemetery at Doniphan. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or multiple sclerosis research. Mr. Antle was born on Feb. 21, 1956, at Kansas City, Mo., to Jesse and Kathy (Gomerdinger) Antle. He was educated in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Northwest High School in 1974. He married Barb Losee on Oct. 12, 1974, at Rosedale. The couple lived in Doniphan, moved to Grand Island and returned to Doniphan. He was a farmer and also worked at New Holland as a welder at the time of his death. He enjoyed softball, camping and skiing. He was an avid hunter. Survivors include his parents, of Grand Island; one son, Jason Antle of Doniphan; one daughter, Stephanie Antle of Hastings; one grandchild; two stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Casey Antle of Joplin, Mo., and Kevin Antle of St. Joseph, Mo.; two sisters, Karen Naghavi of Orangevale, Calif., and Deanna Antle of Grand Island; his maternal grandmother, Mary Gomerdinger of Olathe, Kan.; and his paternal grandmother, Stella McVey of King City, Mo. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Glen Antle and Edward "Shorty" Gomerdinger.

GRAND ISLAND, Feb. 25.---Mrs. John Allan, Grand Island resident for over forty years, passed away today, following an illness of three weeks. She was sixty-two years old. Survinging her are her husband, John Allan, former clerk of district court, two sons, Leo G. of Omaha, and Rex of Canaoea, Mexico, a daughter, Elsie M., of this city; and four brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon.

Charles L. "Chick" Arnett, 77, of Grand Island, formerly of Phillips, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at the Grand Island Veterans Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before services Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice. Mr. Arnett was born on June 6, 1920, at Giltner to Charles A. and Lela P. (Dixon) Arnett. The family moved to Phillips, where he attended school. He worked for several area farmers and also with his father on road and bridge construction. He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 6, 1941, and served during World War II in the European Theater with the 3rd Armored Spearhead Division. He served from Normandy through the Battle of the Bulge and until the end of the war. He married Lois E. Cudaback on June 13, 1943, at Grand Island. He was discharged on Oct. 20, 1945. He returned to the Phillips area, where he farmed for 40 years. He retired in February 1986 due to ill health. The couple attended the Phillips Methodist Church for several years. He was a past member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Club of Aurora. He also was a past member of Eagles Aerie 378 of Grand Island. He coached baseball in Phillips for many years. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Layton Arnett and Alan Arnett, both of Phillips; one daughter, Dorothy Benton of Riverside, Calif.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Orville Arnett of Aurora; and four sisters, Dorothy Purdy of Phillips, Opal Ackerman of Jordan Valley, Ore., Eunice Debban of Kennewick, Wash., and Wilma Debban of Hastings. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Nick and George; and a sister, Ila.

Bernard J. "Jack" Augustine, 73, of Grand Island died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Karohl will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family. Mr. Augustine was born on July 2, 1924, at Omaha to Bernard and Verle (Good) Augustine. He grew up and was educated in the Omaha area. He entered the U.S. Army on April 3, 1943, served during World War II and was discharged on Oct. 7, 1945. He married Louella Ann Piper on Feb. 12, 1989, at Las Vegas. The couple lived in Grand Island, where he worked as a pipe insulator for an Omaha union. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Platt-Duetsche Society, Eagles Club and Florence No. 281 Master Masons. He was a member of International Asbestos Workers Local 39 in Omaha for 43 years. Survivors include his wife; one son, Jason Wallin of Omaha; three daughters, Janice Bickel of Phoenix and Jackie Mabe and Lisa Forbes, both of Omaha; four grandchildren; and three sisters, Vernelle Dalton of San Jose, Calif., Bernice Crofton of Anticoch, Calif., and Jeri Swanson of Omaha.

KEARNEY -- Mabel Alderman, 93, of Kearney died Friday, Feb. 7, 1998, at St. Luke's Care Home in Kearney. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon. The Rev. Dean Pofahl will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Cairo. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the St. Luke's Care Home Chapel Fund. Mrs. Alderman was born May 6, 1907, in Wood River to William and Agusta (Bluhm) Carstensen. She grew up on a farm north of Wood River and attended District 14 School. She graduated from Cairo High School and also attended Grand Island Baptist College. She taught school in Sherman and Hall counties for four years. She married Arthur Alderman on June 9, 1927, in Sterling, Colo. He died in 1969. The couple lived near Julesburg, Colo., where she taught rural schools. In 1929, the couple moved to Ravenna, where they spent the next 29 years before moving to Gibbon in 1958. She operated the cafe at the Nebraska Turkey Plant in Gibbon for 12 years. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Faithful Rebekah Lodge No. 89, Jolly Home Extension Club, H and H Garden Club and Senior Citizen Group. Survivors include three daughters, Jeannette (Mrs. Leonard) Hurt of Omaha, Reva (Mrs. Warren) Smith of Moriarty, N.M., and Gladys Nickel of Minden; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant granddaughter and two sisters.

AUGUSTA, Kan. -- Winnifred G. Adelson, 90, of Augusta, Kan., formerly of Polk, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 1997, at the Augusta Medical Complex long-term care unit. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Swede Plain Cemetery near Polk with the Rev. Jeff Thurman officiating. Solt Funeral Home of Polk is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the public libraries in Wichita and Andover, Kan. Mrs. Adelson was born on Feb. 9, 1907, in Goodland, Kan., to Harry and Harriette (Graham) McClure. She attended Fairmont Elementary School in Wichita, Kan., and graduated from Morningside High School in Sioux City, Iowa. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and taught in a one-room school in Polk County and at the high school in Palmer. She married Orlie Adelson on May 21, 1932. They lived on a Polk County farm for three years and then moved to Clarks. They moved to Kansas in 1942. They lived in Abilene for 10 years and in Augusta for three years before settling in Wichita in 1955. Mr. Adelson died in 1970. Mrs. Adelson earned her bachelor's degree from Wichita State University and taught secondary school in Leon and Andover and elementary school in Wichita. She taught for nearly 25 years and continued in retirement to tutor students. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pi Beta Phi and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Wichita City Teachers Association, National Education Association and Kappa Kappa Iota. Survivors include two sons, Richard Adelson of Andover, Kan., and Roger Adelson of Tempe, Ariz.; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and one half brother, Edward Moore of Oakland, Calif.

Webster "Web" P. Augustine. 79. of Grand Island died Saturday. Dec. 27. 1997, at the St. Francis Medical Center. Services will be at 10:30 am. Wednesday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Dr. Carl Hansen of Midland College and the Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 pm. Tuesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children or the donor's choice. Mr. Augustine was born Sept. 24, l9l 8, to Ernest and Pamelia (Spethman) Augustine in Grand Island. He grew up and attended school in Grand Island. Following high school, he received a degree from Midland College in Fremont. He entered the US. Army on July l0, 1943, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 13. 1944. Mr. Augustine married Donna Burke on June 17, 1943. He was the owner of Augustine Printing Company from 1940 until his retirement in 1968. Mrs. Augustine died on Jan. ll, 1977. He married Ruby Lehmann on March 8, 1979, in Grand Island. Mr. Augustine was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the Shriner Tehama Temple, Boy Scouts of America, the Grand Island Rotary Club and was active in many local civic organizations. Survivors include his wife; one daughter. Joline Whitehead of Yuma. Colo.; one son, James of Alda; two stepsons, Warren Lehmann ofLas Vegas and Bruce Lehmann of Lincoln; one sister, Mercedes Augustine of Grand Island; four grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother.
