ELWOOD CEMETERY
&
August Uckermarker

Contributed by:
William Mahar

This photograph, from the Gertie Mahar collection, of Elwood Cemetery was probably taken sometime between 1915 and 1920. The only identifiable gravestone, center left in picture, is that of August Uckermarker who was buried May 16, 1909 (see Elwood Cemetery Index, T-Z & Unnamed).

According to a U. S. Passport Application1, August was born at Domnau, Kreis (County) Bartenstein, Ostpreussen (East Prussia) on 19 May 1860. Coming to the U. S. on the SS Werra on June 25, 1883 he settled in or near Elwood in 1884 and lived there for the rest of his life. He listed his occupation as farmer. August was naturalized at the Gosper County District Court on May 25, 1891. Physical descriptions had not yet been replaced by photographs when August Uckermarker applied for the passport, but the physical description is fairly complete.
