"Louise Reed, born on the Danish island of Fyn, came to Wisconsin as a child.  She taught herself to swim in the Wisconsin lakes.  She accompanied her parents to a new life in windy, dusty Arapahoe in Furnas County, Nebraska, where they homesteaded.  She was small-boned and fragile, wearing a scarf about her head to combat the neuralgia induced by the prairie wind.  She had true grit (she homesteaded alone in Wyoming for a time), was deft of hand, a talented seamstress, and a natural-born veterinarian of both farm animals and injured wildlife."
