FOREWORD

In presenting this Roster of Soldiers, Sailors and Marines who served
in the Indian Wars, War of the Rebellion, Spanish-American and World War,
I feel that a step has been taken that may lead to a more complete publica-
tion in years to come. While the pamphlet contains the names of many
thousands of veterans, it is admitted that many thousands were overlooked or
failed to co-operate with the county and precint assessors of the state. The
Law directs the secretary of state to publish a Roster of this nature, but it
also requires the assessors to gather, prepare and forward the names to the
officer charged with their publication. A great majority of the assessors of
the state made an honest effort to comply with the law, but in many cases
received scant help from those who should have been glad to co-operate.
A few counties are not represented in this publication simply because they
failed to make a report of any kind. Many counties have given an in-
complete list of their veterans, but until the law provides a penalty or
makes some provision for paying the assessors for gathering this informa-
tion, I incline to the belief that future Rosters will not be greatly improved.
For two years I have labored with the assessors and was given assistance
by the former staye tax commissioners, W. H. Osborn and Wm. H. Smith,
yet notwithstanding our combined efforts this Roster does not contain one-
half the number of veterans who were residents of the state of Nebraska
in 1923, when the data was gathered.

If this Roster meets with approval and shall cause the veterans to
co-operate more fully with the assessors in future endeavors of this character,
I will deem the work of issuing this volume not in vain.

A count of those who served in the different wars reveals the following:

Indian Wars........................... 3
War of the Rebellion..................... 1,845
Spanish-American War..................... 1,396
World War................................21,521
TOTAL....................................24,765

To those veterans and assessors who gave assistance and encouragement
in the gathering of these names and the preparing of this volume, I herewith
extend my sincere thanks.

Respectfully submitted,

Charles W. Pool

Secretary of State.
