Attended school in Republican City, Neb., through the ninth grade, transferred to Alma and graduated from there in May 1986; graduated from University of Nebraska at Kearney with a degree in airline science in 1991; was a flight instructor, then became employed by Coleman Powermate in Kearney in 1994 as a line captain pilot; moved to Wichita, Kan., and worked for Cessna Aircraft as a production test pilot in 1997; moved to Lexington, Tenn., 2003, was captain/manager of the Flight Department of Ayers Asset Management; moved overseas, 2009, and lived in India, Thailand and Singapore, flew as captain for Aditya Birla Group in India and as senior captain/director of safety and standardization for MJets in Thailand and with Marine Base Sands Aviation in Singapore; transferred with Sands Aviation from Singapore to Las Vegas as a captain of a Gulfstream 4 where he was presently employed; just recently obtained his Gulfstream 5 rating

A quote from one of John’s posts a year ago after he had seen the Southern Cross from 43,000 feet and remembered in that quiet cockpit late at night in the dark it was pure magic: “Thank you God for the gift of my travels, my experiences, my loves, my losses, all you have given me. I may be the luckiest man on this planet. In your grace, thank you.”

Grew up in a small Swedish farming community and attended Dalesburg Baptist Church in Beresford, S.D.; began his education at Newdale Country School and graduated from Beresford High School in 1955; growing up, raised cattle and hogs, was active in 4-H and FFA and loved to play sports
Married: Karen M. Colwell, June 10, 1967, in Fargo, N.D.
After marriage, lived in Worthington, Minn., and Greeley, Colo.,; moved to Kearney in 1970
Was a professor of physical science and elementary education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney for 31 years; received his bachelor’s degree at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minn., his master’s degree at the University of Florida and his doctorate at the University of Northern Colorado; loved teaching and spent many years helping elementary and secondary teachers find imaginative ways to integrate science into their classrooms
Activities: attended First Baptist Church, built an acreage outside of town; enjoyed serving in his church, raising cattle, watching his boys play sports and traveling; retired in 2000, then enjoyed camping, exploring nature, spending time with family, watching his grandkids and playing cards with friends; spent a month each winter in Fredericksburg, Texas, enjoyed developing new friendships and hosting others

Was the third of five generations to practice law, beginning with his grandfather, who began his law practice in Lexington in 1884; practiced law for five decades at Cook and Cook Law Office and later Cook, Kopf and Doyle Law Office in Lexington; president of First State Bank of Gothenburg, Neb., and was active in many civic affairs; in Kearney, was an active supporter of the University of Nebraska at Kearney Honors Program and opened his home to many foreign students; received the UNK Distinguished Service Award in 2007; was the treasurer of the Museum of Nebraska Art and president of the Nebraska Cultural Endowment; enjoyed telling stories of his world travels and his love for the state of Nebraska

Acquired her education in many different locations as her family traveled to Denver, Kansas and Oklahoma in her early years; also attended Paramount School south of Long Pine with her education ending at the 10th grade level in Long Pine, Nebr.; was always saddened that she could not finish her high school education, as she really enjoyed school; always helped with the chores, especially the cattle, herding them and mending the fences for her dad
Married: Francis D. Fletcher on February 12, 1945 at Ainsworth while he was home on leave
After marriage, lived first in Couer d’Alene, Idaho, then moved back to the Carlson Ranch near Koshopah in Brown County; after the blizzard of 1949, moved to a farm in Sherman County in the Wiggle Creek School community south of Loup City; in 1965, moved to the Bloody Run School area near Hazard; retired in the community of Ravenna in 1990
Activities: enjoyed all animals; was a very strong and unique woman; loved her music and tap dancing and would often be heard singing her favorite hymns and songs while she did her daily chores; was an avid reader of the Bible and was baptized into the Seventh Day Adventist church; was a wonderful mother and grandmother; always welcomed visitors and her home was always a gathering place for her nieces, nephews and other friends and family

After marriage, lived in Cozad, then moved to the Henry family ranch at Oconto in 1969
Continued as an electrician and carpenter while working on the family ranch; in the early 1980s, moved to Callaway, ran the local Snack Bar; also worked at Callaway Public Schools as head of maintenance; retired and moved to Gibbon, 2008
Activities: was born legally blind, yet never wanted to be considered handicapped; was a caring, compassionate and proud father and grandfather; lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, served in several different capacities; enjoyed woodworking, collecting coins and helping out where he could; enjoyed taking any project and making something better out of it

Began his award-winning teaching career in Hildreth, 1954; moved to Holdrege and obtained his master’s degree in public administration; during his years at Holdrege, the HHS marching band competed biannually with bands from both the U.S. and abroad, always achieving first place; during the off years, adjudicated many marching, symphonic and solo competitions; was awarded numerous recognitions from governors and U.S. senators as well as presidents; his most prized awards were being inducted as an admiral into the Nebraska Navy and obtaining the Gary Thomas Distinguished Alumni Award; always gave the credit of any of his success to his students, all of whom he dearly loved
Purchased the Bahr-Schaal music store in Kearney, 1976; throughout his life, played with various professional groups including the Tommy Morgan Band, The Herb Foreman Group, The 4 Keys, and the Wes and Verle Duo
Activities: enjoyed fishing, anything to do with technology, building his own electronics, tuning pianos, spending time with his family, traveling and a good cigar; did not enjoy golf — but won The Great Duffer award anyway; memberships include the Kearney Elks Club, the Kearney Rotary, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and many others; was also active in the Nebraska State Teachers Association
