Was a longtime Kearney resident; had been in law enforcement in Los Angeles, Santa Monica (Calif.) and special agent investigator for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in Jacksonville; was a professor and former chair of the department of criminal justice at the University of Nebraska at Kearney; received his bachelor of science degree in criminology from California State University at Long Beach, his master of science degree in criminal justice education from Eastern Kentucky University and his Ph.D. in adult education concentrating in criminal justice from the University of Southern Mississippi; authored the college textbook, "Criminal Investigation,"; 1996 winner of a Pratt-Heins grant awarded by UNK for outstanding scholarship and research; teaching career spanned 36 years, of which the last 20 years were at UNK; previously taught criminal justice for four years at Radford (Va.) University, four years at Chadron State College and eight years at Parkland College in Champaign, Ill.; had been in law enforcement
Activities: hobbies and passions included an encyclopedic knowledge of the American Civil War, writing numerous fiction and nonfiction articles and short stories, maintaining his skill as an accomplished artist of sketches and portraits, and continuing to pursue his love for attending and discussing movies and theater

Grew up in Tribune and Horace, Kan., received her education in those towns; graduated from Greeley County High School in Tribune in 1958
Married: April 2, 1961, to Donald Hughan in Tribune
Lived in several towns in Kansas; moved to Gibbon in 1974 and then to Shelton in 1975
Was employed by the Motor Inn in Shelton, then in Gibbon at the turkey plant; worked at Bob's Superstore until health forced her to stop
Activities: enjoyed doing crafts, working on puzzles, reading and gardening
Survivors include her husband; son, Walter "Tinker" Hughan of Shelton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnny and Gwen Eckhoff of Loveland, Colo., Butch and Nora Eckhoff of Scott City, Kan., and George and Karen Eckhoff of Tribune; sister, Dawn West of Yorktown, Va.; and sister-in-law, Carol Eckhoff of Berthoud, Colo.
Was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Nels Eckhoff
