KNIEVEL, SCHAFER, SPECHT posted by A.J. Rizzo on Sunday, December 19, 1999

Looking for information on my great grandfather, Valentin Specht, who immigrated from Germany. He married Gertrude Knievel, also a German immigrant and bought a 160 acre farm in Boyd County approximately one mile north of Butte, NEB in the early 1900's. He raised 7 children, 3 sons and 4 daughters. One of the sons is Benjamin Specht, my grandfather, born in 1902 on the farm. Benjamin married Alvina Schafer and farmed in the Butte area (I believe the same farm) until moving to Orland Park, Ill. in approximately 1939. Ben and Alvina had six children, Paul, Dewayne, Agnes, Ben Jr. Carol and Norman.

ANDERSON, RUNDQUIST, THURSTENSON posted by Joe E. Thurstenson on Saturday, January 8, 2000

My Grandfather, Peter Thurstenson purchased a farm in the NE quarter of section 25 in Township #35 (I believe this section is now in what is called "Ware" Township). This property later came into the possession of my father, John Josef Thurstenson.

Valley Scene School (district 58) may have been in section 25 also. I would like to pinpoint where this school building set. The school was located in the valley of Tobacco Creek and in 1934, a dam was built on this creek and called the Ellwanger dam.

I would like to access a plat map or topographical map that would show these landmarks. Also, any history anyone can provide regarding any of the above would be greatly appreciated.

I have some pictures of student bodies from this school if anyone is interested.

Joe: schoolhouse first built 1899 and was frame bldg., named as you have it due to location, again as you have it. Sorry,I don't have any real geog. details. Schoolhouse moved 1908 to the top of the hill, but name retained, i.e., Valley Scene. "Pete" Thurstenson among the first schoolboard members. Dam completed fall of 1936. I don't have any of the plat or topos that you mentioned for this part of Boyd Co., but watch that if you ever do see any, Ware Twp. was remodeled in 1909; this might impact plat maps. State of SD has good topos for sale; presume NE has, too. So does USGS. Prob nothing new here for you but good luck.

Two corrections on my original posting:
1. My e-mail address changed to
2. I got my directions mixed - my grandfather's property was the NW Quarter, not the NE Quarter. It went into the family in 1904 and was sold out of the family in 1941 or 1942.
