The Boyd County, Nebraska research page is proud to be part of the USGenWeb and NEGenWeb projects.

The USGenWeb project consists of a group of volunteers, working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States.  This project is non-commercial and fully committed to free access for everyone.

This site provides a location where new volunteers can find answers to many of the questions they have about the USGenWeb Project. Where help is needed, guidelines for county and state websites, etc. It also provides information that coordinators can review on subjects that may come up after they establish their state, county or town website. Please help out by adopting a county today!

OLD SOLDIER PASSES ON

It was with a feeling of sadness that the people of Butte learned last Saturday of the death of "Uncle Billy" Brown.

The funeral took place Sunday at the opera house and was attended by a host of friends who had known Mr Brown for many years.

The funeral was in charge of Rev F Farner of the M E Church, the pall bearers being members of the American Legioin, in uniform, in honor of Mr Brown, the old soldier. Interment was in Butte Cemetery.

William Brown was born in Pennsylvania, Dec 27,1847, and died at his home in Butte, Nebr, on Sept 18,1920, aged 72 years, 8 months and 22 days. At the age of 13 years, Mr Brown tried to enlist in the army to help put down the rebellion. After 4 years, or at the age of 17 he was accepted and served until the close of the war. He then enlisted in the regular army and served for 3 eyars in the 16th U S Infantry.

In 1870 he came to Fremont, Nebr. Later he moved to Iowa, and while living in Iowa, met and later married Alice Gossard, on May 28,1876. To this union were born 5 children. Two, Vera and John, have preceded him in death, while Irene, Ernest andRossie are left to share his loss and to comfort their mother, Mrs Brown, who also survives him.

In 1887 Mr Brown moved with his family to Holt Co, Nebr, and later in 1890 to Boyd Co, settling near Spencer. He moved to Butte in 1902, in 1907 he moved to Gregory Co, SD, an din 1910 he went to Tripp Co and there resided with his son, Ernest. Being in need of medical aid he again moved to Spencer in 1913 and later in 1915 to Butte, where he resided until his death.

He has borne patiently and lovingly with a prolonged illness and intense pain at times, but during these lonely hours of sickness, he consoled himself much by singing and humming that old familiar hymn, "Jesus Savior Pilot Me".

He leaves to mourn his departure not only his wife and three children but also 4 sisters, 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren, besides thru his large acquaintance he leaves a host of friends who bow their heads in sorrow as they realize that "Uncle Billy" (as he was familiarly known) has been taken from their midst.

Hotaling, J W
Submitted by: Doris Counts

Last Saturday, J W Hotalling, the 12 year old son of James Hotalling, who at one time had charge of the Stuart- Grand Rapids stage line, accidently shot and killed himself while in the hay field with his older brother. The two boys had gone to the field with a hay rack to get a load of loose hay, and the larger boy had gotten off the wagon to throw on the hay, while the younger boy held the lines with one hand and a shotgun in the other. In some way, the gun slipped through the rack, the hammer of the gun striking on some part of the wagon and exploding the shell. The charge entered the boy's side, tearing the lungs to pieces and killing him instantly. The body was interred in the Butte Cemetery Sunday. Mrs Hotalling is in poor circumstances and all her neighbors sympathize deeply with her in her many afflictions.

James Hotaling died at Spencer early Wednesday morning at the Klug Hotel where he was staying while taking treatment. He had been seriously ill for a couple of weeks and was at Spencer the most of this time, but it was not thought that his condition was so critical, and death came as quite a surprise to his family and friends. The direct cause of his death was blood poisoning which set in as a result of an abscess which came on his face some time ago. Deceased was an old time resident of the Badger country over in Holt County, about 12 miles southwest of Butte, where he owned a place on the Big Sandy. He handled quite a bunch of cattle every year and was reasonably successful as a stockman. He leaves a wife and 9 sons, the oldest of which is 18 years of age, to mourn his loss. Also several brothers, one of which is George Hotaling of Naper. Deceased whould have been 65 years of age on March 14th, had he lived. He was well known over this part of the country having moved to Holt County in 1889. For years he drove the Stuart-Butte stage and scarcely ever failed to make the trip on account of bad roads or stormy weather. Those who knew him best say he was a splendid neighbor and a most kind and loving husband. The funeral was held at Congregational Church in Butte on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock, from which interment took place at the Butte Cemetery, both services being conducted by Rev Searles of Spencer.

Reiser, Nicholas
Submitted by: Doris Counts

Dec 9,1920

Nicholas Reiser was born in Corlogne, Luxemberg, Jan 1, 1836. He had been in excellent health until last week Wednesday, when he was stricken with apoplexy. He only recovered consciousness for a short time, during his illness, and death claimed him Tuesday. He came to LaMotte, Jackson Co, Iowa, at the age of 18, and after 5 years returned to his native home, and was married to Miss Sussana Puetz. After a short stay they returned to LaMotte and settled on a farm where 11 children were born, 7 sons and 4 daughters, all of whom are living. They are mrs Susan Wathier of Alton, Iowa; Peter, Charles, Benedict and James of Holt Co and Frank, Joseph and Adolph and Mrs Geo Leuken of Butte, Mrs Mary Henrich of Centerville, SD and Mrs Anna Cupp of Definance, O. Besides his children he leaves 39 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. He and his family came to their home ranch on the Niobrara in Holt county in 1885 and resided there most of the time until the time of his death. His wife preceded him in death just one year and three days ago and the family and children feel very deeply the loss of their parents and grandparents both in such a very short time.

He was at the time of his death 84 years, 11 months and 7 days old, and was one of the oldest and best respected citizens of Holt Co. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He was a faithful and devout member of the Catholic Church.

The funeral was held from Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church this morning.
