A Brief History |
||||||||||||||||
Charles County is named for
Charles Calvert, 3rd Lord Baltimore and was established in 1658. The county as originally laid out included present day Charles Co. as well as parts of present day Calvert, Prince George's and St. Mary's Counties. The County was originally divided into Proprietary Manors, Zachia Manor, Pangiah Manor and Calverton Manor. Then smaller political subdivisions called "Hundreds" were carved from these manors. Charles County included the Wiccommico Hundred (1642), Pykawaxen Hundred (1649), Riverside Hundred (1653), Chingamuxen Hundred (1653), and the Nanjemoy Hundred (1657). As of 1692 the boundaries of Charles are described as follows; On the south and west by St. Mary's county and the Potomac River, on the east by Calvert County and on the north by the Maryland Pennsylvania line. Charles County was divided into 4 parishes or 7 hundreds. Lower part of William & Mary Parish Hundred. Upper part of William & Mary Parish " East Side of Portobacco " West Side of Portobacco " Lower part of Nanjemy Parish " Upper part of Nanjemy Parish " Upper part of King & Queen Parish " *Nanjemy or Nanjemoy Parish later became Durham Parish* As you can see from the description above the original or "Old Charles County" covered a great deal of the "Province of Maryland" in it's early days. This of course would soon change with the formation of other Maryland Counties. |
