In the name of God Amen. I Abel Gowty of Caroline County in the State of Maryland being sick and weak of body but of sound disposing mind memory and understanding, considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof, and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me home, do therefore make and publich this my last Will and testament in manner form following that is to say ~
First and principally I commit my soul into the hand of Almighty God who gave it and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executor or Executrix herein after named, and after my just debts and funeral charges are paid I devise and bequeath as follows~

Item. I give and bequeath unto my wife Esther Gowty one half of all the land that I now possess during her natural life, from and after her death to go to my son John W. Gowty and his heirs forever. And I also give to my Wife my Gig and harness and one bay mare called Polly Wilson, coalt with her excepted, also all the poultry belonging to the farm and also one feather bed and furniture as a legacy left independent of what the law provides for.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son John W. Gowty the balance of the one half of the undivided parcel or tract of land called and known by the name of Edmondson's Desire part Salem one other part called Havardegrass the quantity not known.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son John W. Gowty my silver watch and also one silver ladle to the value of five dollars, also one one-year old colt by the name of Florah also one bridle and saddle.

Item. I give and bequeath unto Eliza Clark wife of Levin Clark now resident of the State of Indiana sixty dollars in money.

Item. I give and bequeath unto William E. Gowty the sum of twenty-five cts and no more of my estate.

Item. I give and bequeath unto Nancy Turner wife of Enoch Turner the sum of twenty-five cts and no more of my estate.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sally Turner deceased's heirs the sum of twenty-five cts and no more of my estate.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth J. Davis one set of silver teaspoons.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mariah Patchett deceased's heirs the sum of twenty-five cts and no more of my estate.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Arnold Gowty all of my wearing apparel and also ten dollars in money and no more of my estate, and after all of my just debts are paid and legacies taken out and my Wife's thirds deducted then all the balance of my estate is to be equally divided between my son John W. Gowty and my daughter Elizabeth J. Davis share and share alike.

And lastly I do hereby constitute and appoint my Wife Esther Gowty and James Turner to be sole Executors of this my last Will and testament revoking and annulling all former Wills by me heretofore made ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my last Will and testament.

In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this third day of April in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and forty-one.
